1) Introduction

My thanks to Haroon or Rashid, Andy McFarland, Laszlo Nagy, Juergen Brustkern, Eirik Gullaksen, Chim Kim Lye, Morten Rasmussen and Michael Grøne Andersson, Eugeny Atarov, Stephen Boyd, Mary Vigliraki, Bill O'Rourke, Ravi, John Hillery, José Riverol, Ching Kim Lye, Wieslaw Niewiadomski, Jovan Petronic, Pierre Carbonnel, Michael Atkins, Thierry Foissez, Arthur F Brameld, Hartmut Metz, Leontxo García, Jogvan Naes, Matthew O'Hara, José Mariano Acosta, Vladica Andrejic, Victor Hansen, Steve Laios, Nigel Short and everyone else who helped with the issue.

There isn't any doubt that the performance of the week is that of Nigel Short. He took first place in the Category XVII Hunguest Hotels tournament in Budapest with 6.5/9 a point clear of Judit Polgar. I asked Short about this result and he replied that it was one of the best of his career. For him Amsterdam VSB 1991 where he finished equal 1st with Salov ahead of Kasparov and Karpov was probably the best. He places this result up with Tallinn/Parnu 1998 (7/9 in a category XVI event with amongst other Adianto, Khalifman, Lautier, Andersson and Oll), Pamplona 1999 (again Cat XVI 7/9 ahead of Gelfand and Polgar) and Groningen 1996 (Category XVI 7/11 ahead of Gelfand, Timman, Shirov, Leko, Svidler etc). Polgar herself will surely be at least reasonably pleased with her result, already back in the top 10 she gained rating points also. Peter Leko finished a further point behind, after winning the Linares tournament this result is certainly a step down but a win in the final round limited the damage to his rating. The Category XVI Karpov tournament in Poikovsky starts this week with Peter Svidler as favourite.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

Matthew O'Hara of Cajun Chess reports: The 2003 Tampa Open was held at the Comfort Inn near Busch Gardens on April 11-13. A total of 237 players, including Grandmasters Jaan Elvest, Alexander Goldin, and Rashid Ziatdinov; attended this event held by Cajun Chess (http://www.cajunchess.com). Early fireworks were provided by Dagoberto Diaz, a player from Cuba with a 2245 FIDE rating now living in the the Tampa area, with wins over GMs Elvest and Ziatdinov. A last round setback kept Dagoberto away from a share of first place. Elvest recovered from his first round loss to Diaz, winning all of his remaining games. Goldin had the same result, only backwards, with a last round loss at Elvest's hands after 4 wins. Rounding out the tie for first place at four points were Senior Master Mark Ritter and Expert Daniel Ludwig. Ritter defeated Diaz in round 2. Mr. Ludwig, the top-rated USA 12-year old, drew Mark Ritter on the way to the top.
