Garry Kasparov turned 40 on Sunday still World Number One on the international rating list a place he has occupied almost without interruption since he first grabbed that spot in July 1983. 20 years of unparalleled success, certainly in the modern era. In that time he has had the reputation as the most aggressive of players combined with the kind of losing record that made Capablanca a legend. Nor is the story over. Not much could really improve his place in chess history but the possibility is there that he might win matches against Ponomariov and then the winner of Kramnik and Leko (an announcement by the Hungarian PM moved that match closer to reality this week) and that would be something to compare with his finest moments. I think we can expect Kasparov to be motivated for this task.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The Hunguest Hotels Super Chess Tournament takes place in Budapest 11th-20th April 2003. Players include Leko, Polgar, Gelfand and Short. After 4 Rounds Judit Polgar leads by half a point from Nigel Short. At the opening ceremony the Hungarian Prime Minister Dr. Péter Medgyessy declared Hungary would spare no effort in bring the match there to give Peter Leko home advantage in a sixteen game contest against champion Vladimir Kramnik. The Technical Director of the Hungarian Chess Federation Gabor Kallai has also indicated in an interview with Hungarian news agencies that negotiations are continuing.
The game round 3 game Ferenc Berkes vs. Peter Acs was postponed because of the Hungarian Team Championships. I have no details or games from that event.
