1) Introduction

My thanks to David Llada, Simón Hernández, Ingvar Johannesson, Christophe Philippe, Junior Tay, Jovan Petronic, Pascal Villalba, Jean-Marc Illien, Luc Henris, Mihajlo Savic, Olivier Deville, Juergen Brustkern and Miklos Orso, Haroon or Rashid, Bill Townsend, Steve Laios, Peter Sowray, John Donaldson, Thomas Henrich, Hassan Khaled and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Therer is a saying in American sport "Show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser". Kasparov certainly showed himself to be an outstandingly bad loser at the closing ceremony of the Linares tournament when he loudly complained about the choice of his loss to Teimour Radjabov as the brilliancy game of the tournament. For myself I think the result is good for chess and perhaps good for Kasparov's chess too. If Kasparov had won this tournament when clearly not at his best then when are his rivals going to win? If Kasparov was cross with himself then Anand had equal reason to be so, he dropped two half points to Kasparov and Leko in rook and pawn endings that should have been just technique for him to draw. Kasparov's outburst shows he still cares but was delivered with such overkill that he only invites ridicule. However perhaps its this passion that will drive him to his best chess in the next event.

On a sad note today I was informed of the deaths of two well known chess personalities GM Ludek Pachman and Dr Lim Kok Ann.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Linares 2003

The traditional Linares Supertournament (XX "Ciudad de Linares") was a 7 player double round robin with Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik, Viswanathan Anand, Peter Leko, Ruslan Ponomariov, Francisco Vallejo Pons and Teimour Radjabov. Peter Leko took first on tie-break from Vladimir Kramnik. They were half a point clear of Viswanathan Anand and Garry Kasparov.

The final chapter of the event was the prize-giving. The tournament marked the end of a four year, 10 elite tournament winning streak for Kasparov (Wijk aan Zee 1999 - Linares 2002). It might have been Leko who won the tournament but it seems Kasparov was determined to win the prize-giving. According to a report by David Llada http://www.jaque.tv/kasparov_colera03.htm Kasparov created a terrible scene at the closing ceremony of the event over the awarding of the brilliancy prize by journalists to Teimour Radjabov for his win over Kasparov in round 2. As the award was being made Kasparov made his way to the micro-phone and angrily said "I believe that this one is not the best game of the tournament, it has been chosen solely because it was the only game that I lost, and I consider that this is a public insult and a humiliation." he added angrily "It is the greatest insult that they [journalists] have done to me in my life! It is an insult towards me and chess. You consider yourself chess journalists? If you think that this was the most beautiful game in Linares, you are damaging chess with your reports and articles. Radjabov was completely lost in that game."

Kasparov has some previous with "brilliancy" prizes. He was a frequent vehement critic of the choice of audience prize at Wijk aan Zee. I probably agree that this wasn't the most accurate game of chess but for a young player like Radjabov to have the courage and strength to fight Kasparov the best player in the world in a sharp position like this is extremely impressive. If in the end the game fails the accuracy test that isn't surely especially important. The fact that it provoked this level of reaction two weeks later is surely a sign of weakness on Kasparov's part. It shows the loss hurt a lot. Added to which this was Kasparov's first loss at Linares for 7 years and given that his rivals all beat Rajadov with white it could be said to have cost him first place. In the absence of a truly outstanding alternative this choice was, in my view, fair enough, although I never liked the title brilliancy for these awards. Perhaps they should be called most memorable game of the tournament prize. The irony is no-one would have made much of the award until Kasparov made such a fuss. Personally I've done my fair share of losing my temper in the past after losing games I should have won. Mostly (but maybe not completely) with age I've managed to curb this (I've had plenty of practice) if for no other reason than you end up looking incredibly stupid.

Schedule: The Opening ceremony and drawing - 21st February 2003. Round 1 22nd February - Last round and closing ceremony 9th March 2003 - Rest days 26th February and 4th March 2003.

4) German Bundesliga

The 12th and 13th rounds of the German Bundesliga took place over the weekend of March 8th-9th 2003. Defending champions Luebeck dropped their first point of their campaign in round 12 when they drew against SC Baden Oos. There were only two decisive games, John Nunn beat Ludger Keitlinghaus for Luebeck but Rustam Dautov equalised for Baden Oos with an impressive victory over Alexei Shirov in a very sharp game settled in a time scramble. Luebeck still have the fate of the title in their own hands as the league goes into its final two rounds at the end of this month. However they cannot afford to lose anymore points. Porz vs Solingen was another big results. Games from Solingen are not yet available but all the rest are.

14) US Amateur Team East

Bill Townsend reports: The U.S. Amateur Team East took place from Feb. 15 to 17 at Parsippany, in northern New Jersey. There were three other Amateur Team events run at the same time in different parts of the country (West, Midwest and South) but the East is where the Amateur Teams started over 30 years ago, and traditionally it is by far the largest of the four. This year a record 264 teams competed. As far as I know this is the biggest chess team tournament ever held in the Western Hemisphere.

Four teams tied for first place with team scores 5 1/2 out of six, so their final ranking had to be decided by tiebreaks. In fourth place with 16 individual games won was "Dirty Harry Nelson Pillsbury" consisting of Richard Delaune, Gregory Acholonu, Stan Fink and Seth Passell. In third place with 17 1/2 games won was "Make Luft Not War," team members: Pascal Charbonneau, Samson Benen, Ben Johnson and Evan Rosenberg.

Two teams had won 18 games so a further tiebreak system was used to separate them. In second place were "The Amber Knights" consisting of Ildar Ibragimov, Geoff Gelman, Rich Jackson and James Critelli. First place team was "University of Texas Dallas Orange," with team members Andrei Zaremba, Dennis Rylander, Ali Morshedi and Clem Rendon.

While it may seem strange that a team from Texas won a regional team tournament held in New Jersey, Team East often has a national or even an international element to it. For example, among the players were former U.S. Champions Joel Benjamin, Lev Alburt and Arthur Bisguier, along with the current Canadian Champion Pascal Charbonneau. Speaking of international, there were two other players who should be familiar to TWIC readers: IM Malcolm Pein played board one for "USCF Malcolm Tense" while Mig Greengard played board one for "www.chessninja.com."

Incidentally, the word "Amateur" in the title refers to the fact that each team must have an average rating below 2200 USCF. Within that constraint, anything goes.

Unfortunately, the biggest story of the weekend took place not over the board but outside the hotel as the Presidents' Day Blizzard closed roads in New Jersey and nearby New York. However, it takes more that two feet of snow to stop determined chessplayers: about 75% of the players who began the tournament were still there for round six.

Campomanes Sentenced to Jail

Former FIDE President Florencio Campomanes was sentenced to one year and 10 months imprisonment for "failure to render account on the disbursement" of the Philippine Sports Commission’s (PSC’s) funds for the June 6-25, 1992 World Chess Olympiad amounting to P12.8 million. It seems highly unlikely that Campomanes will be jailed. The case is another example of Campomanes cavalier attitude to money which saw him preside over FIDE to the point where it ran out of money. At the recent FIDE Congress he was angry to be questioned over his continued high expenses.

"Oskar-2002"

The chess community - journalists, publishers, organisers, arbiters and grandmasters who write on chess - have for over 30 years been determining the best chess-player and the Top Ten of the past year. After a 7-years break the popular contest was revived by the Russian magazine "64" - Chess Review (published and edited by A.Roshal, the Chairman of FIDE CHIPS Commission).

64 invites that you offer your version of Top Ten for 2002. The one, whose prognosis turns out to be the most exact, will be honoured the title of "Prophet-2002". All the results will be published by "64" and will be available on the Internet.
