1) Introduction

My thanks to Harald Grafenhofer, Arthur Brameld and Adam Raoof, Javier Rubio, Rumen Angelov, Steve Laios, Gérard Demuydt, Mikhail Golubev, Mikhail Langer, Andy McFarland and ICC, Rod McShane, Pascal Villalba, Ales Drinovec, Laszlo Nagy, Michael Rahal, Sinisa Drazic, Frank Quisinsky, David Llada, Manoj Sapre, K Ozawa, Ilya Gorodetsky and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The main story of the week is clear the Linares super tournament. Round 2 saw 15 year old Teimour Radjabov beat Garry Kasparov. Far too much can be read into one game, it did after all in spite of good play from Radjabov, contain a bad blunder (27.Rfd1?) from Kasparov. Radjabov wouldn't be playing in Linares in the first place if he wasn't capable of this kind of result. Nevertheless it must be the best single game result by a 15 year old and a finishing score of 50% or more would be a tremendous debut. It is a measure of the seriousness with which Kasparov views the tournament that this was his first loss at Linares since 1997 when he lost to Vassily Ivanchuk. Kasparov has played the tournament every year since.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

7) FIDE and Seirawan on Ponomariov

Yuri Vasiliev of Sport-Express has interviewed FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov at: http://www.sport-express.ru/art.shtml?63354

Highlights (translation Mikhail Langer):

Ilyumzhinov: "Ponomariov agreed to all the conditions, worked out by the FIDE commission in charge of organizing world championships. He agreed to play with a 7-hour time control and dropped his claims for any privileges. Even before, Ponomariov never raised the question of whether to play or not to play against Kasparov. He was more concerned with the fate of the unification process as a whole."

"As a matter of fact, it will be officially announced this Saturday in Bucharest on the FIDE Presidential Board meeting...However, Sport-Express can be the first in the world to announce it. Here are the principal dates of the match: 19 June - 7 July 2003. It will take place in Buenos Aires. Prize fund: no less than 1 million dollars. Match will take place under the patronage of the Argentinean President, Eduardo Dualde, who is a big fan of chess and quite a strong player himself."

Ilyumzhinov adds that the final reunification match will probably be in Buenos Aires or New York in November and he has offers on the table. He would be prepared to take Peter Leko if he can't come to an agreement with Kramnik. He very much wants to hear that their match is going ahead.

On the FIDE Grand Prix "FIDE Grand Prix - that was the undertaking of the former director of FIDE Commerce, Artyom Tarasov. You remember how I had to save the tournament in Dubai..."

"Grand Prix was thought about completely as a commercial project. So far, there are no interested sponsors. And FIDE cannot constantly pay money from its own pocket. I hope, chess players also understand this."

Yasser Seirawan also gave a lengthy interview to Mikhail Golubev about the situations discussed above for "Chess Today #836" you can read it at: http://www.gmsquare.com/interviews/seirawan2.html

Campomanes Sentenced to Jail

Former FIDE President Florencio Campomanes was sentenced to one year and 10 months imprisonment for "failure to render account on the disbursement" of the Philippine Sports Commission’s (PSC’s) funds for the June 6-25, 1992 World Chess Olympiad amounting to P12.8 million. It seems highly unlikely that Campomanes will be jailed. The case is another example of Campomanes cavalier attitude to money which saw him preside over FIDE to the point where it ran out of money. At the recent FIDE Congress he was angry to be questioned over his continued high expenses.

"Oskar-2002"

The chess community - journalists, publishers, organisers, arbiters and grandmasters who write on chess - have for over 30 years been determining the best chess-player and the Top Ten of the past year. The idea was first introduced and supported by spaniard Jorje Puch and International Association of Chess Press (AIPE). After a 7-years break the popular contest was revived by the Russian magazine "64" - Chess Review (published and edited by A.Roshal, the Chairman of FIDE CHIPS Commission).

64 invites that you offer your version of Top Ten for 2002. The one, whose prognosis turns out to be the most exact, will be honoured the title of "Prophet-2002". All the results will be published by "64" and will be available on the Internet. Websites: http://www.64.ru and http://www.chess-express.ru where you can read about the results-2002 of challengers and vote. Also you can vote by e-mail: chess@online.ru, info@joeblack.ru or by fax (095) 291 8717. Please help 64 to keep the tradition alive!
