Man - Machine matches dominate things this week. Long time readers of TWIC and even pre-TWIC will know that I'm not a huge fan, I think the Kasparov vs. Deep Blue caused problems for chess sponsorship as a whole. This week we saw Bareev draw with HiarcsX in a solid match. However its Kasparov's match against Deep Junior that has really commanded the headlines, making a strong impression in the mainstream press and TV. Its been the usual ride, computer loses horribly and everyone says its no good, computer just survives after finding a miracle draw, Kasparov blunders horribly and loses then solid and worthy draw. The best computer programmes still struggle in closed positions with clear plans for the human but as soon as the position opens (which is often required to win the game) and tactics are required then they reveal themselves to be as strong or stronger than humans. It leads to odd chess as both sides try and engineer from the opening the contrasting position types they need for best results. I hope Kasparov wins the match but rather suspect that like the Kramnik - Deep Fritz match late last year it will end in a draw.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The Kasparov vs. Deep Junior takes place January 26th-February 7th 2003. The schedule is Game 1 Sun Jan 26th, Game 2 Tue Jan 28th, Game 3 Thu Jan 30th, Game 4 Sun Feb 2nd, Game 5 Wed Feb 5th and Game 6 Fri Feb 7th all games start at 3:30pm EST. The event is called the "The FIDE Man Vs Machine World Chess Championship" and is sponsored by FIDE and presented by X3D Technologies Corporation which covered the recent Kasparov - Karpov match. The time control is 40 moves in 2 hours followed by 20 moves in one hour then 30 minutes for the rest of the game. The Prize Fund is $1m with a $500,000 fee for Garry Kasparov, the other half being divided: Winner gets $300,000 to the winner and the loser $200,000, in the case of a tie, $250,000 each.
After his smashing win in game one Kasparov almost found a win in game 2 falling to a clever tactic after building a tremendous position. Game 3 saw Kasparov much better out of the opening again but he missed a relatively simple tactic in trying to win when he had a simple draw available and had to resign. Game 4 was a war of attrition which simplified into a double rook ending which saw the computer with an extra pawn and no winning chances.

The Gibraltar Chess Congress takes place 28th January 6th February 2003. The event has two 10 round Swisses. Vasilios Kotronias is leading with 5.5/6. The country code is a bit difficult, as is the politics of Gibraltar, but they will be submitted by the BCF and ENG is therefore correct according to organiser Stewart Reuben. My thanks to Stewart Reuben and Neville Twitchell.

The 40th National A Championships of India took place 18th-31st January 2003 in Mumbai, India. The 21 round championships were a category VIII event. The two great hopes for Indian Chess finished in the top two places with Krishnan Sasikiran taking first on 16/20 two points clear of Pentala Harikrishna on 14 who was in turn a point and a half clear of the field. Harikrishna was undefeated, Sasikiran lost one game but generated a huge number of wins. As reported in TWIC 425: The Amplico Aig Life Rapid tournament took place in Warsaw (Poland) as part of the 21st Stanislaw Gawlikowski Memorial 21st-22nd December 2002 in the Palace of Culture in Warsaw. The prize fund was 15.000 USD. 360 players took part in the tournament. After 7 rounds (G-25') top 16 players played in quaterfinals. The rest of players played 4 more rounds. In the finals group all games were G-10'+5". Evgeny Bareev beat Andrei Volokitin in the final. My thanks to Bartlomiej Macieja for sending me a copy of the games now. I've done some work on the games trying to sort them into the different sections (Preliminary, Quarter Finals, Semi-Final and places, Final etc), it maybe that in some of the quarter final groups I haven't got this quite right with games instead belonging to the preliminary section.

Mr Kirsan Ilyumzhinov
Dear Mr President,
We, a group of leading grandmasters participating in the international tournament in Wijk aan Zee, turn to you in this critical moment for the fate of world chess. We are deeply worried about the fact that the three stages of the FIDE Grand Prix have not been played. The first stage took place in Dubai in April 2002, the second in Moscow in June of the same year. As it is known, during the FIDE congress 2000 in Istanbul it was decided to return to the 2- year cycle of staging the world championship. The prize fund remained the same as for the 1-year cycle, i.e. three million US $ instead of the 5 million US $ for the 2-year cycle in 1997-1998. The explanation for reducing the prize fund was that the money saved this way would be used for the FIDE Grand Prix.Without stating reasons, the FIDE Grand Prix 2002 was stopped after two stages instead of the scheduled five. Furthermore, its official results have not been published. As this is one of the most important tournaments in the official FIDE calender, we find these situation unacceptable. Also, we are worried about the lack of reliable information concerning the world championship 2003 which the FIDE congress scheduled for November/December of this year. For professional players like us, it is absolutely necessary to plan far ahead so that we can prepare ourselves for the confirmed date and the rules of this tournament. In this letter, Mr President, we have expressed but a small part of the problems which have recently been worrying the grandmasters and the whole chess world.
Sincerely yours, L. van Wely, E. Bareev, A. Karpov, R. Ponomariov, A. Grischuk and A. Shirov.

The chess community - journalists, publishers, organisers, arbiters and grandmasters who write on chess - have for over 30 years been determining the best chess-player and the Top Ten of the past year. The idea was first introduced and supported by spaniard Jorje Puch and International Association of Chess Press (AIPE). After a 7-years break the popular contest was revived by the Russian magazine "64" - Chess Review (published and edited by A.Roshal, the Chairman of FIDE CHIPS Commission).
64 invites that you offer your version of Top Ten for 2002. The one, whose prognosis turns out to be the most exact, will be honoured the title of "Prophet-2002". All the results will be published by "64" and will be available on the Internet. Websites: http://www.64.ru and http://www.chess-express.ru where you can read about the results-2002 of challengers and vote. Also you can vote by e-mail: chess@online.ru, info@joeblack.ru or by fax (095) 291 8717. Please help 64 to keep the tradition alive!
