My thanks to Laszlo Nagy, Andras Bacsi, Radu Chirila, Leonid Gofshtein, Davor Golek, Mikhail Golubov, Primal Dominique, Stefano Ticozzi and everyone else who helped with the issue.
The Olympiad concluded on Sunday with victory for Russia. This didn't exactly come as a surprise as they were the defending champions with one change, Garry Kasparov in for Konstantin Sakaev. Kasparov had an excellent event scoring 7.5/9 and the highest ELO performance of the event at 2933 extending his lead at the top of the FIDE rating list. After Kasparov's poor performance for Russia in the Russia vs. The Rest of the World rapid match he underlined his dominance again. This in contrast to Ruslan Ponomariov whose 6/11 and 2684 seems to confirm he has slipped back since his win in the FIDE World Championships and Linares performances at the start of the year. This is not necessarily a big surprise but does mark the end of continuous improvement over the last few years. I expect him to be World number one in the next few years but maybe not as fast as might have been thought after Linares.
I have reworked the TWIC 417 games section with improved files from rounds 1-8 (the same files can be downloaded from the front page of TWIC also). I will include the rest of the Olympiad games in this issue. There are problems with some of the games but not really that many given the size of the event. The overall the work done on the official site covering the Olympiad was not at all bad (although the full standings only appeared today and the Olympiad stats and an account of decisions at the Congress are still missing). I would still advocate more staff to check for problems and especially a lot of staff for the first couple of rounds where problems have affected the electronic boards in the last few Olympiads. Reports from players suggest it has been one of the more memorably good Olympiads of recent years.
Hope you enjoy this issue.
Mark
The 35th Chess Olympiad Bled took place 25th October - 11th November 2002 and the 73rd FIDE Congress, 1st-11th November 2002. All reports suggest that this was an event very much enjoyed by the players. The men's title was taken by the favourites Russia. The team of Garry Kasparov, Alexander Khalifman, Alexander Grischuk, Peter Svidler, Alexander Morozevich and Sergei Rublevsky always looked like having the power to overwhelm opponents if heavy scoring was needed. As it was the cruised to the title with draws in the final two rounds. They did lose one match, to Hungary, and four games including Robert Ruck's victory against Peter Svidler in the above mentioned loss. A point behind them was Hungary whose squad looks set to be challengers for the next few Olympiads. The core of their squad with Peter Leko, Judit Polgar and Zoltan Almasi is as good as any. They lost just one game in the whole Olympiad but unlike the Russian's they didn't manage to get the number of crushing victories Russia did. The battle for the Bronze medal was far more open. Armenia's 3-1 victory against Georgia eventually settled it for them. The women's event was far more interesting with a battle amongst three teams for Gold going to the final round. The women's event was won by top seeds China, number three seeds Russia finished second and number 9 seeds Poland were shock bronze medalists. Poland earned their medal as they started a meltdown that must be practically unprecidented in Olympiad history. Georgia after 10 rounds led with 24 points, China were 3.5 points behind them on 21.5 and Poland at this stage were in 6th place 5 points behind the leaders on 19. Poland then beat Georgia in round 11 2.5-0.5 and the Georgian team seemed to lose all composure and lost all their remaining matches and managed to finished outside the medals completely.
Of the politics side there has been little news. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has been reappointed FIDE President. I haven't confirmation of other stories and look forward to reading detailed reports of those who were there when they get back. Also whilst I have the scores of the players I don't have absolute confirmation of the board prizes. I will hopefully have more statistics next week.
