The highlight of the week is the "Match of the New Century" between a Russian team and a Rest of the World Team. As you might have read in last week's edition Sergei Danailov complained that two of the very best ROW players are not playing Topalov and Adams and he felt this would make it a huge mismatch. However at the half way stage the ROW lead Russia by a point. This is largely due to the huge underperformances of Vladimir Kramnik (on 50%) and especially Garry Kasparov (40% 2/5) who you would have expected to score +2 at least. Kasparov started badly losing to Vassily Ivanchuk which could not rate as a huge shock as Ivanchuk has a reasonably good record against him. What did rate as a shock was Kasparov losing to Judit Polgar for the first time. By my calculation this was Polgar's 13th game against Kasparov at standard and rapid timerates (there were also a couple of blitz games) and Kasparov had won 9 and drawn 3. I still expect Russia to win this match but the form of their two leading players is going to be key and Kasparov can't afford to lose to any more players he has never lost to before.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The "New Match of the Century" takes place in Moscow September 8th-11th and is a 10 round Scheveningen Rapidplay (25 minutes + 10 Seconds per move) tournament between 10 players from Russia and 10 from the Rest of the World.
Round 1 World leads 6-4, Ivanchuk beats Kasparov. Round 2 World wins 5.5-4.5 to lead 11.5-8.5 at the end of day 1. Round 3 Russia win 5.5-4.5 and now trail 14-16. Round 4 Russia edge another 5.5-4.5 win. Kasparov wins his first game against his usual customer Shirov. Russia now trail only by one game 19.5-20.5. Round 5 saw eight of ten games decisive yet the honours were shared 5-5 leaving the score at 24.5-25.5 to the ROW. The huge shock was Judit Polgar's first ever win against Garry Kasparov which sent him down to below 50%. Kasparov has always gone out of his way to beat Polgar who is the first female player to beat him.

Bill Townsend reports: The 124th New York State Championship was played from 30 August to 2 September, 2002 at the Hudson Valley Resort near Kerhonkson, New York, a town about 80 miles north of New York City.
Four players finished in a tie for first place as GM Joel Benjamin, GM Alexander Stripunsky, GM Michael Rohde and untitled Aaron Pixton all finished with an undefeated 5-1 score. Pixton, only sixteen years old, had to defeat two-time former World Championship Candidate Leonid Yudasin to make it into the winners' circle.
Since all four were New York State Residents it was not clear at the end of the tournament who would be the actual New York State Champion. It was thought that four was too many co-Champions, even though there have been three in previous years. If a tiebreak was used to determine a sole winner, it would be GM Benjamin. This would be Benjamin's ninth New York State title, either shared or solo.
There was a lot of fighting chess played, even in the final round where the top four boards all had decisive results.
The New York State Championship is the longest running annual event in the United States, and perhaps the world. Its list of champions goes back to 1878 and includes many well-known U.S. players such as Frank Marshall, Reuben Fine, Isaac Kashdan, Arnold Denker, Larry Evans and more recently Robert Byrne, Roman Dzindzichashvili, Leonid Shamkovich, John Fedorowicz and Maxim Dlugy. New York also counts two World Champions on the list: Jose Capablanca was champion in 1910, and world correspondence champion Hans Berliner was champion in 1953.

George Mirijanian reports: GM Alexander Ivanov won the 62nd New England Open championship, held Aug. 30-Sept 2 in Marlborough, Massachusetts, USA. The former U.S. co-champion and multitime Massachusetts state champion tallied 5 1/2 points out of 6 to finish a full point ahead of his closest rivals. Ivanov's victory was tarnished, however, as he was allowed by the organizer of the event to re-enter the tournament after he suffered a second-round loss to national master Alexander Cherniack. (For the game score, visit the Web site www.sentinelandenterprise.com Click on columnists and then George Mirijanian.) After starting over again, Ivanov chalked up five wins in a row, including victories over FMs William Kelleher, Paul MacIntyre and Christopher Chase, before drawing fellow GM Gildardo Garcia in the final round. Runners-up with 4 1/2 points apiece were FM Igor Foygel, national master Joshua Friedel and GM Garcia (who lost to Friedel in the second round). Tied at 4-2 were Kelleher, Chase, MacIntyre, Cherniack, Avraam Pismennyy and FM John Curdo.
