An interesting week for FIDE off the board. The IOC seem to have shut the door to chess (and bridge) being part of the Olympics for some time to come describing them as Mind Sports and thus not eligible for the event. Indeed they have been talking about how unwieldy the event is and have talked about removing events that have been in the Olympics for years. With the change of President of the IOC it seems chess will not come under consideration for a long time to come. Perhaps this will mean the drugs testing in chess will now be dropped. Silvio Danailov talks about his brief involvement with FIDE over team selection for the "Match of the Century" saying that FIDE have effectively made the event a waste of time by assembling the strongest possible team for the Russians but by no means extending this care to the opposition.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

Dr. Aydin Saray reports: The 2nd Grand Prix Tournament of 2002 in Turkey was held in Kocaeli the event was called the "Saraybahçe Grand Prix Tournament 2002" and is held in Kocaeli, Turkey 17-26 August, 2002. The venue was the place where ten thousands of people had died due to the terrific earthquke in 1999 and the day tournament began is the very same day with the earthquake. The event commemorates the victims who died tragically then. Swiss (136 players, ELO average: 2556 -top 20 players' average) 25 GMs, 22 IMs, 3 FMs, and 2 WGMs.
Mikhail Gurevich took clear first with 7.5/9. Valerian Gaprindashvili has now achieved a 2500 ELO rating and fulfilled the final condition he needed to become a GM. Konstantin Shanava (GEO), Levan Pantsulia (GEO) and Beglar Jobava made IM Norms as well.
Alongside the event GMs Vassily Ivanchuk and Zurab Azmaiparashvili were honorary guests during the tournament and they joined various activities to popularise chess in Turkey. Ivanchuk played against four leading visually-handicapped Turkish chess players blindfold and won 4-0. This activity arose great interest in Turkey. The goal was to draw attention to the current status of handicapped people in our society. Blitz games that GM Ivanchuk played vs. leading Turkish Olympiad players are in the games section.

Silvio Danailov, the manager of Vesselin Topalov has spoken about the "Match of Century" between the Russians and the World in Moscow September 8th-12th 2002. The World team is missing two of their best players Vesselin Topalov and Michael Adams. This version is based on the Russian interview he gave at http://www.worldchessrating.ru/ and was produced with his co-operation.
Silvio Danailov says that the story of Topalov's absense goes back to the Dubai Grand Prix. The original prizefund was $120.000 and Topalov did not plan to play in the event especially as it started directly after the Monaco Amber tournament and was immediately before the Prague Rapid tournament. Then it was announced there was an increase in the prizefund to half million of dollars a change that was confirmed to Danailov when he contacted FIDE in Lauzanne. When the players arrived in Dubai it was explained that prize fund the same $120.000 that was originally announced. Some participants refused to play, but Topalov and Danailov decided not to fight about it, especially as they were already there.
Then it came to whether Topalov would play in the match of the century. FIDE sent a contract to Topalov at the end of June. Danailov regarded the contract as a little strange and he felt that a professional player could not sign such a contract. In particular Danailov and Topalov thought it necessary to ask for guarantees with money for participation being transferred two weeks in advance of the event the kind of guarantee Owen Williams, Kasparov's manager regularly asks for. They asked for this but were refused. So they decided they would not play, it was in the run up to the Dortmund Candidates and that took precidence. Already after Dortmund, on 12 August, The organisers of the match phoned Danailov with one additional proposal that Danailov be the trainer of the World team and naturally, Topalov would also have to be in the team.
When Danailov looked into the match it was already clear that the Russian team would be the strongest possible. They would play Kramnik, Kasparov and Karpov in their team. The World team was far from optimum however.
Danailov said he was ready to become the team trainer but only if Topalov, Adams and several other players including the in form Van Wely played. The organisers said that they had already failed once to get Adams to play. Danailov said he thought he had good relations and thought he could get him to play provided FIDE could satisfy his financial conditions. Adams sent those to him via E-Mail.
However once Danailov started to talk to FIDE it was clear that they were not prepared to meet Adams or Topalov's financial conditions even though in Danailov's view they were completely reasonable sums. In his view FIDE didn't concede to anything. Danailov thought the World Team might have had a chance to win if it was at its strongest (as the Russian team is) now it is simply doomed to defeat.
He has only two explanations: Either someone in FIDE is interested in Russia being certain of winning the match, or they are experiencing serious financial difficulties. Which of these options is correct he does not know.
The Professional World Chess Ranking for players rated 2500 and higher for September 1st 2002 has been released. Produced by Ken Thomson, New Jersey and calculated by Vladimir Dvorkovich, Moscow.
