RB Ramesh became the first Commonweath visitor to win the British Championships since Abe Yanofsky from Canada in 1953. Ramesh became the first Indian to triumph since Sultan Khan who won in 1929 and 1933. The challenge of Ignatius Leong for the FIDE Presidency should at least lead to some discussion of the issues that have been decided by dictat over the last few years. The summer brings a huge quantity of chess in this issue. The major event next week is the Anand vs. Ponomariov rapid match in Mainz which should be very interesting indeed.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The Smith & Williamson British Chess Championships took place in Torquay, 28th July - 10th August 2002. The event was open to British and Commonwealth players and there was a strong Indian entry this year. The Indian players were favourites to make a clean sweep of the main titles and they achieved that. There was however a surprise winner of the championships with Indian IM RB Ramesh winning with 8.5/11 half a point clear of last years champion Joe Gallagher and pre-event favourite Krisnan Sasikiran (who took the under-21 title). As expected the women's title was taken by Humpy Koneru. My thanks to Bob Jones and John Saunders for their help.

The 2002 Montreal International took place July 25 to August 5, 2002. Jean-Marc Degraeve won the event with 8.5/10.
Lubomir Ftacnik reports: Montreal international tournament was the 3rd edition of the event, that is the child of Andre Langlois. Himself a promissing player in his young days he chose an academic career, but stayed connected with chess in a capacity of the rear species of able chess organizer. The aim of improving the standard of chess life in Canada is pursuied with annual round robin tournaments giving best players the chance to meet strong international opposition. The third edition has reached a respectable level of FIDE cat 11, with some players in the 2600 range. Thanks to the help of insurance company Axa the venue was a beautiful conference room in the heart of downtown Montreal with a similar adjoining space for chess analyses and commentary animated by local masters. Everything in the running of the event was professional and very pleasant, many specatators were attending daily and stayed the long night hours of hard fought games. The improbable organizational achievement of Mr.Langlois still cost him great sum from his own pocket, but he hopes to sell the event to the corporate sponsor eventually. Notable results were achieved by one of the favourites Degraeve and canadian champion and coming star Charbonneau. The Montreal star and best canadian GM Lesiege has hit a misserable form and struggled to stay afloat. Against all odds the similar event is planned for the next year, encouraged by the unusually broad coverage in the local media and even television.

The Olomouc Chess Summer 2002 took place 31st July - 8th August 2002 in Olomouc (Czech Republic). There were 4 groups of IM round-robin tournaments, a FIDE open and tournament for youngsters up to the age of 18. There were altogether 258 players from 20 countries including GM Jan Plachetka (2439), IM Ramil Hasangatin (2517) or Tania Sachdev - junior woman champion of Asia 2002. Full results below. Note that the game Bernasek - Florea Inline Czechia Cup (6) saw the clear winner of that event have an extra white as the players contrived to play with the wrong colours.
My thanks to Jakub Fuksik.

Maciej Nurkiewicz reports: "II Miguel Najdorf Memorial" in Grodzisk Mazowiecki The famous polish grandmaster Miguel Najdorf was born in Grodzisk Mazowiecki (about 30 km from Warsaw). For this reason in this city last year started an international tournament to commemorate one of the greatest chess players in history. This year the second tournament (27.07-03.08) saw 45 participants compete including Vladimir Malaniuk and Michal Brodski who started from the second round as they came immediately from a tournament in Barlinek. IM Lukasz Cyborowski (POL) won with 7,5/9, second was IM Sergey Fedorchuk (UKR)7/9. A few games from the final round are available.

There was a new tournament on the "Swiss Chess Tour 2002" in Davos. The 1st International Chess-summer Open took place August 4th-10th, 2002. The host and one of the sponsors was the Hotel "Sunstar Parkhotel". The seven round Swiss was won by Vlastimil Hort. Games next week.
Sinisa Joksic reports: The 1st Summer Holiday Open Davos was won by Vlastimil Hort (58), main favorite, who hasn't played a tournament since October last year (match Ladies-seniors). He also played just 6 games for his club "Porz" Germany. In Davos Hort won 4 games and drew 3 and was the only unbeaten player on the tournament. 2nd and 3rd were Papa Severin and Kurmann Oliver both 17 years old from Switzerland. Young masters achieved the same points as Hort, so the final order was decided by "Buholz" system. Open with 40 participants took place in "Sunstar Park Hotel" (4 stars) will become traditional, next year with two rounds more. Date the 2nd Summer Holiday Open Davos is August 2-10, 2002. Organizer "Swiss Chess Tour" decided to go slow with Davos tournament, with moto if you like Davos, bring your friend. The tournament was directed by IM Sinisa Joksic.
