I pass another landmark today with issue 400 of TWIC. I always have mixed emotions on these occasions. Its nice to pass these landmarks yet in another way its just another issue in a routine which is now part of my life. I thank you, the readers, for your continued support, the kind people who send me news, corrections and feedback and especially I thank Malcolm Pein and the London Chess Center for the kind of stability and financial support that allow me to be lucky enough to continue to be able to do this. A special thanks goes to Anjo Anjewierden whose program and players files I use to create consistency in the naming of players and and the production of PGN and tables without which TWIC would not be what it is today.
This week's top event has the kind of tournament that I really like. Tough chess at serious time controls with a great prize for the winner at the end of it is what all sport should be about. Once the dirty business of unification has happened then world championship qualifiers with real career defining prizes at stake are the priority. Hand picked challengers and flexible dates for the World Championships can no longer be tolerated. The last decade could have been fantastic for chess, we missed out on so many great events because of the split. Most of the leading players have not been able to plan or develop their careers because of the mess and I think we've all been the losers for that. A period of order and stability is now essential. Chess has the capacity to produce moments of fantastic drama but only with the background of a stable championship cycle. Here's hoping that a new start can produce great games and rivalries.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting 2002 takes place 6th-21st July 2002. The main event is a Candidates tournament to find a challenger for Vladimir Kramnik's Einstein Group World Chess title.
After three rounds of the preliminary stage Vesselin Topalov leads group 1 with 2.5/3 and Evgeny Bareev group 2 with the same score. There have already been some exciting and tight games in what promises to be a tight and well fought event. You can read John Henderson's reports on the event daily on TWIC's pages.

The FIDE July 2002 list is out. A quick look at the top 100 shows Adams getting back above Topalov, Leko back in the top 10, big gainers Ivan Sokolov, Epishin, Kaidanov, Volkov, Kobalia and Istratescu. Korchnoi is down 20 places, Seirawan, Dautov and Kharlov also lose points. Back in the list are Nunn, Ftacnik and Van den Doel. In for the first time is Kazhgaleyev. Those who have dropped out are Tregubov, Glek, Vladimirov, Gyimesi, Andrei Sokolov, Andersson, Korneev, Stefansson, Rustemov, Fedorov and Najer. 2598 was enough to get a player into the top 100 in the April list now the mark is 2600 hence the clearout of players at the bottom of the list. A large number of nations are missing including: Argentina, Yugoslavia, Latvia, Slovakia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bolivia, Bosnia, Egypt, Estonia, Georgia, Macedonia, Morocco, Angola, Jordan, Mozambique, Nigeria, Palestine, Yemen, Zimbabwe all due to unpaid fees by these Federations. There may be many others. Russian players were restored to the full list only a day after the initial release presumably their fees have been paid.

The Slovak Championships took place in Kaskády, 26 June - 7th July 2002.
Lubo Ftacnik reports: The Slovak championships were played in two sections between 26.6.-7.7.2002 at the holiday resort of Kaskady near Galanta (some 65 km from the capital Bratislava). The new energetic president of chess federation Milan Kajan always dreamed about the chance to run a round robin international event backed up by a reserves open. For the first time since the independence of Slovakia (1.1.1993) the project was truly realized with a respectable FIDE cat 12 GM tournament and distinctly more modest swiss event with 96 players. The foreign guests in the main event proved too strong for part of the slovak field, but Movsesian is now the proud owner of a slovak passport and membership of the federation on the July FIDE list. He did not play well after his Sarajevo triumph, but managed to win slovak title in a 10min+5sec tie break match with Ftacnik. Sutovsky had great time, but when he missplayed an advantage in the last round Landa nearly caught with him despite first round loss to Romanishin. The winner of the open section qualified for the 2003 championship, that might move to the booming Bratislava or traditionally strong chess center Presov. Regnina Pokorna nearly won the men's B championships (as well as the women's A title incorporated in the open), but went under in a winning position against Likavsky in the 8th round. 9 rounds op: 1.Likavsky 7,5, 2.-9.Pokorna Regina, Pribyl Jozef, Jovanovic Zoran, Rigo Zsolt, Meszaros Michal, Mrkonjic, Manik, Balogh Tomas 6,5 etc.

The Internet Chess Club (http://www.chessclub.com) is running an on-line tournament series, the ICC World Blitz Championship, which is likely to draw the largest and strongest field of any internet chess event to date.
Complete information on the tournament, including scheduling and format of the qualifying tournaments and the knockout stages, prizes and rules, is available on the ICC's webpage at http://www.chessclub.com/event/wbc/rules
Sixty-four finalists will be determined by qualifying Swiss-system tournaments to be held on weekend dates between June 29 and August 11. The qualifiers will be held at different times of day for the convenience of participants in different parts of the globe. One need not play in all of the qualifiers; a good score in any one of them may suffice to advance to the knockout stage.
A series of knockout matches will begin on August 17 and will culminate in a 20-game final match on September 7 and 8.
Time controls will be four minutes to start plus a two second per move increment in the qualifying tournaments, and five minutes plus a five-second increment in the knockout stages.
The prize fund will be $5000 US, with $1500 going to the first place winner. There will be cash prizes for the 32 finalists who win in the first knockout round, and over 33 years of free membership in ICC will be divided among as many as 200 players for their results in their respective rating classes in the qualifying tournaments.
Entry is free, but is limited to ICC members with paid or exempt accounts. (The ICC grants an exempt account to any FIDE GM, IM, WGM, or WIM. For others, membership costs $49 US per year, or $24.50 for youth and students. Free trial accounts are available, but are not eligible to play in this event.)
ICC organizers expect that this summer-long event will break the record for number of participants in an Internet chess event which was set by the third Dos Hermanas tournament, hosted by the ICC in March of this year. 1460 ICC members from around the globe, including 56 GMs and 97 IMs, participated in the qualifying rounds of that tournament, which was won by GM Aleksander Rustemov.
Organizers also are confident of their ability to prevent cheating by the use of computer programs or chess databases in this event. "Any time you are offering prize money to people who are playing over the Internet out of sight of each other, you have to prepare for the possibility that someone will try to use computer software to cheat," says ICC co-owner Martin Grund, lead organizer for the tournament. "But our investigatory team is the best there is. And we have improved the rules and format based on our experiences with other events. For example, the rules for this event guarantee our right to use proctors to observe play in person if we believe it is appropriate."
The 2nd European Individual and Team Chess Championship for Youth and Juniors (Rapid and Blitz) will be held from August 15th-22nd 2002, Novi Sad, Yugoslavia.
