1) Introduction

My thanks to Laszlo Nagy, Senan Dervisevic, Andras Bacsi, Milen Petrov, Adolivio Capece, Eugeny Atarov, Jovan Petronic, Lanfranco Bombelli and all those who helped with this issue.

A quiet week. The main news is that Kasparov won the FIDE Grand Prix in Moscow in convincing style. Stories from Moscow suggest that Prague is back on track after the various controversies of last week although a story I read just a few moments ago as I was finishing the magazine suggesting that Anand might be involved in the unification process http://www.chathurangam.com/fideinv2k2.asp is certainly intriguing.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) FIDE Moscow Grand Prix

The FIDE Moscow Grand Prix takes place 1st-6th June 2002. Garry Kasparov won the event in relative ease, his only problem came in game two of the semi-finals when Khalifman missed a win (60. ...Qa4) deep into the endgame and probably time trouble. The final was historically interesting. It was the first over the board meeting between 15 year old wunderkind Teimour Radjabov and Garry Kasparov. Both players were born in Baku and started by going to Oleg Privorodsky's chess school in their home town. Kasparov realised recently that he used to go to the chess school with Radjabov's father when they were both children.

5) Bosnian Teams

The Bosnia-Herzegovina Team Championships took place in Neum 2nd-8th June 2002. There were 100 players (23 grandmasters and 21 international masters) including Michael Adams, Alexei Shirov, Sergei Movsesian, Predrag Nikolic, Ivan Sokolov, Smbat Lputian, Zdenko Kozul, Mikhail Kobalia,... The winners were SK BOSNA, Sarajevo (Adams, Shirov, Ivan Sokolov, Sergei Movsesian, Teimour Radjabov etc) ahead of SK KISELJAK, Kiseljak (Predrag Nikolic, Smbat Lputian, Mikhail Kobalia etc) and SK NAPREDAK,Sarajevo (Ognjen Cvitan and Zoltan Varga etc). In a way SK Kiseljak were unlucky, the championships were settled on board points not match points, Kiseljak won all their matches defeating the winners 3.5-2.5, however Sarajevo were heavier scorers with 42/54 points three points better than Kiseljak. Alexei Shirov scored 2/2 and Michael Adams 4.5/5. Games from the final round follow next week. My thanks to Senan Dervisevic.

6) Hungarian Championships

The Hungarian Men's Chess Championships finals took place in Balatonlelle in the Hotel Postas 1st-9th June 2002. The event had two all-play-all groups followed by a knockout tournament based on the placings in the preliminaries. The games are a bit messy and may be corrected later (the order of the games is unclear in many of the playoff matches). My thanks to Paul Suranyi of the Hungarian Chess Federation.

The U18 European Team Championship are being held in the same place 10th-19th June 2002 with live coverage also.
