Anjo Anjewierden, Roberto Alvarez, Bob Wade, Otto Borik, ICC, SS Quah Flemming Jensen of Under Uret, Wlodek Proskurowski, Howard Streit, Hugh Brodie and Jonathan Berry. One of the problems of letting TWIC hang over until Monday is that you always get extra material! Here the Copenhagen Open was totally new, and there were updates to the World Open, Quebec and most importantly to the Intel story. This story is base on a lot of rumour, there aren't any solid facts to be had. However there are no doubt people making plans to go to Cologne when in fact they should be going to New York. The PCA's silence is leaving a big vacuum filled with rumour. I've tried to give the story as I see it. Only Cologne and the PCA can tell us the real story. Anyhow I'll wrap up now before any more news arrives. Mark 2) PCA INTEL World Championship may be played in New York ------------------------------------------------------ The PCA INTEL World Championship final between Kasparov and Anand now looks likely to be held in New York rather than Cologne, finance permitting. I've tried to piece together what is happening, this news is not confirmed in any way however. One thing is certain, people should hold off booking accomodation in Germany until it is cleared up. With only ten weeks before the scheduled start of the match it appears that the German organiser's are about one million Deutchmarks short of the required amount to hold the match. When Heinrich Jellissen died in December of last year I was told almost immediately that this would be a disaster for German chess. He was responsable for a large amount of the money with which events over there were financed. This appears to be the case as the Bundesliga has had its financial troubles and now this rather disappointing (rumoured) failure to find the money for the PCA match. The floods in Cologne can't have helped in finding local sponsors. If this is the main reason it has resonance with the LA riots that could be said to be responsable for the founding of the PCA in the first place! (you'll have to work this one out for yourself!) It looks like the PCA are trying to organise the event in the World Trade Centre and that an announcement may very will be made to this effect this week. I imagine they're waiting to be reasonably certain of the finance. This match is going to be a genuine battle, with a reasonable chance (probably a little less than 50%) that the title will change hands this time, so there is some room to sell this match to potential sponsors. On a side note, it had earlier been stated that the BBC would cover the match in Britain. However UK Teletext appealed for letters to the BBC as this coverage may now be in the balance. (in the brave new market BBC, with all its market efficiency in place, it managed to "mislay" an extremely large quantity of money, so the chess may be a victim of that). All World title matches, at least since 1972 have been covered on TV, (including both the FIDE and PCA matches last time.) Now the match looks like it is in the States one would hope that the PCA will be able to get proper coverage of the title match itself on US TV. Did the New York INTEL Grand Prix get any TV coverage anywhere? This was as I wrote the story yesterday (Sunday). Malcolm Pein gives a slightly different version in the Telegraph today (Monday). He suggests that it is simply a case of the PCA receiving a better and more prestigious offer in New York. He wonders how they are to get out of their contract with Cologne. Dortmund pulled out of bidding for the Championships because of a clause which allowed the PCA to change venues at a very close date to the Championships. Perhaps Cologne signed this ridiculous document. Perhaps there is some truth in both accounts with Cologne struggling to raise the money but expecting to hold the match and the PCA deciding to go elsewhere. I expect developments this week. ************************************************************************ 3) GRAN PRIX CLARIN (tournament IV)- Potrero de Los Funes- SAN LUIS -ARG June 17 to 25, 1995 , by Roberto Alvarez ************************************************************************ IGM Gilberto Milos won the IV event of the "Gran Prix Clarin", held on "Potrero de los Funes", an small village around San Luis City (800 Km from Buenos Aires, Argentina, South America). He was a bit lucky due to a win against IM Roberto Servat, who lost on time in a winning position. Second was IGM Pablo Zarnicki (former world champion U-20, silver medal in the Moscow Olympiad 1994), with better Bucholz than IM Andres Rodriguez (Uruguay). This last named player got his first IGM norm, and finished unbeaten. The following are the standings in the "Grand Prix CLARIN" (CLARIN is the main newspaper in Argentina), after 4 tournaments: 1)Sorokin, M (RUS) 125.50 ; 2) Zarnicki (ARG) 120.50 ; 3) Slipak ,S (ARG) 95.66; 4) Ricardi,P (ARG) 62.50; 5)Milos,G (BRA) 57; 6) Quinteros, M (ARG) 44.33; 7) Campora,D (ARG) 42; 8) Garcia Palermo (ITA) 37.50 ; 9) Soppe (ARG) 35 ; 10) Rodriguez, And (URU) 34.50. 1. There were teams from the 7 nations attending the summit and from Russia. The timerate was 30 minutes for all the moves. The players all played in their home countries via the internet. The teams had one male and one female member. The UK was to be represented by Danny King but the time of the event was changed so he was replaced by Ali Mortazavi. There were a number of technical difficulties during some of the games. Today we recall a study that employs a similar idea but where the wQ sacrifice is repeated several times (naturally, because of that the position is less economical). The study is by then 24-years old, who now is a GM in Chess Composition. +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | b | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | Q | | | q | | | r | o | Jan Rusinek, T.f.Schack, 1974 +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | o | | | | 1st Prize +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | B | | | | k | + | W: Kg3,Qa7,Bc5,p.d4,e4,f2,g4,h5 (8) +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | o | | + | + | | + | | B: Kg5,Qd7,Rg7,Bh8,p.a2,b3,b4,e6,h7 (9) +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | o | | | | | K | | White to move and win +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | o | | | | | + | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ Solution: The first two moves create a mating net 1.f4+ Kh6 1...Kf6 2.e5+ wins easily 2.Bf8! First wQ sacrifice a1Q It must be refused since 2...Qxa7 3.Kh4 leads to a mate. Black in turn sacrifices its newly promoted Queen in an attempt to deactivate bQ. 3.Qxa1 Qc8 The only way to try to save the game is to attack wB. 4.Qa6! Second wQ sacrifice. Note that wQ also attacks pawn e6. Paranthetically, if 3...Qd8 then again 4.Qa6, not 4.Qa5? Qc3+ Again, it must be refused: 4...Qxa6 5.Kh4 with a mate. 4... Qxf8 with the same play as in the main variant. +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | B | | b | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | r | o | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | Q | | | | o | | | k | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | + | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | o | | + | + | + | + | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | o | q | | | | K | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ Now it is your turn to find the next White move.
