1) Introduction

My thanks to Aard Daanen, Igor Prokhorov and Alex Onischuk, Luis Manuel Pérez Rodríguez and Luis Lamarche Rodriguez, Yvette Seirawan, Sinisa Joksic, Sead Bicevic, Yin Hao, David Collins, Jan Mazuch, Mehrdad Pahlevanzadeh, Hassan Khaled, Markus Brenner, Frans M. Hoynck van Papendrecht, Vladica Andrejic, Jean Christophe, Eugeny Atarov, Luis Scalise, Laszlo Nagy, Vlad Barsi and Istvan Magyar, Milan Zivkovic, Hans Olav Lahlum, hechiceros.net, Jakub Fuksik and all those who helped with this issue.

The Eurotel Trophy knockout starts later this week. Kasparov and Kramnik both play in this event. There is disappointment as the news comes through (as yet I have yet to find a second source for this info) that the Astana tournament looks like it has been cancelled. This means Kramnik is in danger of not playing any classical chess events this year.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Astana Cancelled?

According to a report of the 20th April 2002 on the clubkasparov Russian site:http://www.clubkasparov.ru/site/news/2002/lenta.htm the Astana tournament scheduled at the end of May has been cancelled this year. Organisers are reported to be saying the event will take place in 2003. No details as to why. The event was to have featured Kasparov, Kramnik, Anand, Topalov, Adams and Kostenko. Independent corroboration is awaited.

Alexei Shirov wrote to tell his story about the reduction of the prize fund in the FIDE Grand Prix in Dubai in TWIC388 (also http://www.chesscenter.com/twic/shirovdubai.html) Octagon have replied to one of the points made in the letter (David Collins).

Octagon have replied to one point made in the letter:

"Octagon were not and are not responsible for the prize funds at FIDE Grand Prix events. The reason for the reduction in the UAE Grand Prix prize fund was the last minute withdrawal of support from a private investor with whom FIDE Commerce had been negotiating.

Octagon continue to work alongside FIDE and FIDE Commerce to build on the success of this first Grand Prix in Dubai."

17) Bundesliga

The Bundesliga 2001-2 season saw rounds 12 and 13 and Luebeck slowly but surely advance towards the title with a narrow win against Castrop Rauxel and a slightly more comfortable victory against Wattenscheid. Games from Wattenscheid were in TWIC last week and Erfurt this. By the way if anyone can tell me why Andreas Arnold Schmitz is called that name in the Bundesliga and Andreas Falentin in the ELO list I'd be interested, one of them needs changing. Is it a case of the FIDE ELO list naming being practically impossible to change? (it took 10 years for the list to change Gary to Garry as in Kasparov and Veselin Topalov spells his own name Vesselin not as the list gives it).

18) Yugoslav Women's Championships

The 55th Yugoslav Women's Championships are taking place in Kotor 13th-24th April 2002. Games from the first 6 and results from the first 8 rounds are available. Svetlana Prudnikova leads with 6/8, half a point behind but with the three bottom place players still to play is Irina Chelushkina. So far as I can tell Danicom Vranesevic is an unrated player. My thanks to Milan Zivkovic.

20) Gausdal Tournaments

Hans Olav Lahlum reports: Possibly last edition of the Gausdal Classics Round Robins was played 11th-18th April 2002 and included one GM-group, two IM-groups and one ELO-group. First place in the GM-group was shared by GM Kaido Kulaots of Estonia, GM Vasilios Kotronias of Greece, and Kjetil A Lie of Norway on 6,5/9. Surprise man Kjetil A Lie made his hopefully decisive IM-norm exceeding it by one and a half points overscore but missed a sensational GM-norm when drawing Kotronias in the final round - while IM Berge Østenstad tragically failed a golden chance to become Norway's fifth GM as he blundered in a promising position to Kulaots.

IM Jeroen Bosch of the Netherlands won IM-group A with 7/9 and GM Normunds Miezis of Latvia IM-group B with 8/9. Three players missed their chances for IM-norms in the last round, but WFM Heather Richards of England achieved her fourth WIM-norm with one point overscore when taking 5/9 in IM-group A.

All results, every move of all 180 games, round reports covering all 180 games and portraits of all 40 participants can be found at http://home.online.no/~eirikgu/gausdal2002/ - ELO-calculations and a motivated throw of a die for all 40 participants will be coming up soon.

21) Donner Memorial Rapid

Frans M. Hoynck van Papendrecht reports: The Dutch IM Gert Ligterink won the Donner Memorial Rapid tournament which took place on Sunday April 14th 2002 in The Hague (Netherlands). He came 1st half point ahead of IGM Genadi Sosonko (in his younger years in Russia a trainer Korchnoi and Tal). Third place was taken by IM Frans Kuijpers. Shared fourth, fifth and sixth place were taken by IGM Hans Ree, IM Kick Langeweg and IM Rob Hartoch. The Donner Mem orial Rapid tournament was held on the account of the 150th birthday of The Royal Dutch Chess Society Discendo Discimus ('DD Den Haag'), which was founded in 1852. The tournament took place in the Nationaal Schaakgebouw in The Hague, the premisses of DD and one of FIDE's cradles (the administration of FIDE was situated there from 1924 untill 1944). Hein Donner (1927 - 1988) was the best Dutch grandmaster of the generation that came after World Champion and FIDE-president Max Euwe. He was a well known member of DD. One of his best achievements was his victory in the tournament of Venice 1967, where he came 1st (ahead of amongst others the then reigning World Champion Tigran Petrosian and also Larry Evans).

The tournament website is: http://ddspecials.tripod.com (a subsite of the DD's Chess Club site at: http://home.planet.nl/~discendo_discimus both are in Dutch.
