The most significant change in the new FIDE rating list is the battle for 3rd position in the rating list. A year ago Anand and Kramnik were very close at number two in the World over 40 points clear of the rest of the field. One year on Anand has returned to the field and there is only a nine point gap between Anand, Topalov, Adams and Ponomariov. World number three is up for grabs for the first time in a few years. Elsewhere Shirov gives an account of some of the events that took place before the start of the FIDE Dubai Grand Prix I reported on last week.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The New FIDE top 100 for April has appeared. I'm not in a position to use it for most of the games in this week's TWIC but from next week I should be able to.
The full list and various top lists are at: http://www.fide.com
A quick look suggests that losers include Anand (down 5 and within reach of a number of players now), Morozevich (hemorrhaging points and down to 8th), Van Wely (down from 14th to 43rd), Motylev, Shipov, Kobalia, Rustemov. Dropping out of the top 100 altogether: Macieja, Kozul, Papaioannou, Gulko, Chuchelov, Najdoski, Asrian, Rozentalis, Portisch, Shulman, Magomedov, Speelman and Conquest partially because 2596 instead of 2598 was enough to get in last time. Winners include Topalov (at 4 now), Ponomariov (up 16 points and to 6th now) Gelfand (into the top 10), Grischuk (13th and over 2700), Malakhov, Sasikiran (a big new entry), Alexander Graf (back to more like his old form since his change of country and name), Kaidanov, Vescovi, Radjabov, Volkov, Milov, Vladimirov, Novikov (now USA), Bu Xiangzhi (the Chinese wonderkind makes it into the top 100 for the first time) and Korneev.

Alexei Shirov writes to tell his story about the reduction of the prize fund in the FIDE Grand Prix in Dubai. Here is his letter:
Shirov E-Mail dated Sunday 14th April 2002
Dear Mark,
I am glad that you asked me to tell you the story. I would like it to be published both in your website and in your magazine.
In February this year I confirmed my participation in Dubai under the condition that the prize fund would be no lower than what was announced on the FIDE website on 7th of February (480 thousand USD minus 10% of the FIDE tax). I did not sign any contract with FIDE and neither I was sure that I would take part in more FIDE Grand Prix events. However my confirmation was accepted by FIDE and on 2nd of April at the late evening I arrived in Dubai. The tournament was to start on 3rd at 2PM although some matches including mine would start at 6PM.
As I arrived late, I even missed the players' meeting but at the same evening Zurab Azmaiparashvili (who is funnily both an elite player and a FIDE man) told me that Bareev would probably withdraw because the prize fund was reduced to 120 thousand. I immediately said that I would do the same. On the next morning I made a written protest, then Khalifman presented his one and Leko verbally joined us while his manager wrote his protest to FIDE.
In fact Leko was the only one of us who had a real contract that actually stated even a bigger prize fund - 500.000$.
Khalifman and Leko had to play at 2PM but when the matches started we three were asked to talk to Kirsan Ilyumzhinov. He explained us that Octagon did a bad job failing to accomplish the players' conditions and the tournament was not to take place with the previously announced prize fund. In search for the last moment solution Ilyumzhinov suggested that he would increase the prize fund to 240 thousand (by the way at the end the FIDE tax was not taken) and not deal with Octagon in future.
As I have always appreciated Ilyumzhinov' involvement in sponsoring chess, I decided to play in Dubai as well as other players did. I believe that Ilyumzhinov deserves a better working team to deal with and the constact critics against FIDE shouldn't be always directed to him.
On the last note I would like to state that I strongly suspect that some players did not protest as they might have had separate agreements about their participation in Dubai and even worse they might have known about the prize fund situation beforehand. The situation in the World elite professional chess has become even more chaotic.

Sinisa Joksic reports: The 14th "Kreuz-Open" March 28th - April 1st 2002 (part of the "Swiss Chess Tour 2002") was a 7 round Swiss system, with the top four players going into a knockout after five rounds with the rest carrying on to finish their final two games. The players played one game at normal time rate and then playoff games after a faster time rate until the first decisive result. In the final Lothar Vogt was beaten by Florin Jenni 1.5-0.5. The 3rd-4th playoff saw twins Moor battle, Olivier beat Roger 2-1. (Semi-finals: Jenni beat Roger Moor 1-0 and Vogt beat Olivier Moor 1-0).
There was a new venue, Hotel "Kruez", 4 stars hotel, instead of the traditional "Lenkerhof" repairing now, was excellent host for chess event. (If you visit Lenk don't miss the "Kruez" buffet!). 114 participants, mostly came with family, combining chess and skiing on the mountains near by. The weather was on chess players side, all the time were around 20 degrees Celsius (for April!), but the snow was perfect for skiers.
The first time in history of "Swiss Chess Tour", one swiss player, Florian Jenni, got pool position, by rating. (Even Korchnoi wasn't number 1 by rating.) IM Jenni has turned 22, four days before Lenk, already made GM results, and it is a question of day when he official be award with GM title. Jenni play good chess, in Lenk was superior, made only two draws, the first in Round 5 against Roger Moor, and the second in final, in the first game with Vogt. Lot of chess experts were surprised, to hear his decision, to stop his professional chess player career, and to go to university this autumn. Great success made twins brother Roger and Olivier Moor (25) finishing 3.& 4.
The 15th Lenk Chess Festival take place 17th to 21th April 2003.
