The Amber Blindfold and Rapid tournament had a close finish and a new winner. Alexander Morozevich, mostly on the back of 9/11 in the blindfold event won half a point clear of Alexei Shirov. The big shock of the event was Kramnik's performance. His 50% score was the worst result he has had in any form of chess for years. The Dubai World Cup starts on Wednesday, the big question is can Ponomariov consolidate his growing reputation by winning this event.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The Amber Blindfold and Rapid tournament took place 16th-28th March 2002. Alexander Morozevich won the event finishing with 15/22 in the combined standings just half a point clear of Alexei Shirov. Shirov made a brave attempt to catch Morozevich beating Vladimir Kramnik 1.5-0.5 in the final round but it was not enough. Boris Gelfand won the Rapid part of the tournament with 7.5/11 half a point clear of Topalov and Ivanchuk. Morozevich won the Blindfold event with 9/11 a point clear of Shirov both players were undefeated a tremendous achievement.

The 57th Yugoslav Championships take place in Banja Koviljaca they started on 16th March 2002. After 8 rounds Dragisa Blagojevic and Dejan Pikula lead with 5.5/8.
Marjan Kovacevic reports: "The 57th Yugoslav championship ended with some surprising final results. IMs Dragisa Blagojevic (born 1966) and Dejan Pikula (1969) and GM Milos Pavlovic (1964) will play an additional 6 round mini-tourney for the first place (Berger, 2 games with each other). Both these IMs got GM norms, Blagojevic his first, and Pikula his last. The 4th place of IM Goran Arsovic turned to be a pleasant surprise. Pikula repeated his last years success, when he had tied the first place with IM Ostojic and GMs Damljanovic and Kovacevic. On the other hand, Damljanovic had his worst result ever. A. Kovacevic, with the highest rating, and Ostojic, also did badly this time. The 6 best secured their places in the next championship 2003."
Only a tiny number of games are available.
