The Linares tournament had an exciting finish with Kasparov playing Ponomariov in the penultimate round when they were tied. We may have seen the start of what could become a great rivalry. Kasparov came out the victor on this occasion but Ponomariov has shown enough in the FIDE Championships and Linares to suggest he can win in the future. Kramnik after a long layoff will play in the Amber tournament starting later this week. It seems likely that Kasparov, Kramnik and Ponomariov will all meet in Prague in a knockout event in April. We could be entering a new exciting period.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

Linares was a seven player double round robin with Garry Kasparov, Viswanathan Anand, Michael Adams, Vassily Ivanchuk, Alexei Shirov, Francisco Vallejo Pons and FIDE Champion Ruslan Ponomariov. It took place 22nd February - 10th March 2002. There were on the spot photo reports for TWIC from John Henderson.
The story of the Linares tournament worked out to be the pre-event story, how would Ponomariov do and how would his first games with Kasparov turn out. Kasparov was the strong pre-event favourite and as the tournament progressed this proved to be the case. The pre-event predictions for Ponomariov were harder. It was his first event, he had little time to prepare and indeed little time to recover from his FIDE World Championship victory against Ivanchuk. Ponomariov showed himself to be completely at home in this company and he was the only player pressing Kasparov. When Ponomariov beat Vallejo in round 12 he joined Kasparov in the lead setting up perfectly their round 13 clash. That game proved to be the most tense of the event. Ponomariov decided to play the French as a surprise for Kasparov but proved not to be au fait with the correct move order and got into severe trouble. He hung on for a long time before perhaps getting too ambitious and going down in flames. Kasparov looked highly motivated for this game and perhaps a new rival is something he relishes. John Henderson said that by the end it was clear Ponomariov had earned Kasparov's respect (something his pre-event comments didn't show). Kasparov went on to win in the final round against Alexei Shirov and take the event by a point and a half from Ponomariov. Kasparov performed to his rating and showed how hard it will be to shift him from World number one. 18 year old Ponomariov showed he was very comfortable at this level and his clear second place with the obvious power to improve (better opening preparation will simply take time) it is interesting to speculate whether he is already, in reality, a top three player who only needs his rating to catch up with his progress. Elsewhere Francisco Vallejo Pons in his first elite event (and by far the lowest rated) played well enough to increase his rating. A disaster for Shirov meant Vallejo didn't even finish last.
Zhang Pengxiang won the Anibal Open with 8/10.

Bessel Kok has expressed interest in Yasser Seirawan's proposals. In part he says: "By now the chess world will have read the proposal of chess grandmaster Mr. Yasser Seirawan for a solution to the problems afflicting our game. This proposal offers all the key elements for resolving the current impasse and serves as a basis for negotiating a final fair solution. Along with the two other proposed Commissioners, Mr. Dato Tan Chin Nam of Malaysia and Mr. Erik Anderson of the USA, I am honoured to have been proposed by Mr. Seirawan and am pleased to announce that the three of us agree to serve as Chess Commissioners. It is our sincere hope that all of the other parties will be prepared to accept the authority of this new office. "

The U.S. Masters Championship was held in the Chicago suburb of Oak Brook February 28 through March 3 and featured 101 players including 15 GM's and 13 IM's in a 7-round Swiss for $22,000 in prizes. The tournament was co-titled the Dr. Eugene Martinovsky Memorial after the aforementioned FIDE Master bequeathed $25,000 for the running of this event, the first ever U.S. national tournament financially underwritten by a major bequest.
Five GM's tied for first with 5.5 out of 7.0, each pocketing $3,000.
1-5 GM Gregory Kaidanov (USA) 5.5-1.5 GM Alexander Onischuk (UKR) GM Daniel Fridman (LAT) GM Leonid Yudasin (ISR) GM Aleksander Wojtkiewicz (POL) 6-14 GM Dmitry Gurevich (USA) 5.0-2.0 IM Nikolay Andrianov (RUS) IM John Watson (USA) GM Gregory Serper (USA) GM John Fedorowicz (USA) IM John Donaldson (USA) NM Jason Doss (USA) IM William Paschall (USA) GM Anatoly Lein (USA)
In addition, this event was the first of six events to qualify six players for the 2003 U.S. Championships to be held in Seattle. The six qualifiers were John Watson (in his first event for three years), Serper, Fedorowicz, Donaldson, Paschall, and FM Stanislav Kriventsov who got the last spot on tiebreak with 4.5 points.
Helen Warren organized the event for the Midwest Chess Association. IA Todd Barre and NTD Tim Just directed.

Bill Townsend reports: Over the weekend of Feb. 16-18 the US Amateur Teams were held at four locations throughout the United States: East, West, South and Mid-West. The East is where it started 32 years ago and it is traditionally the largest, dwarfing the other three events and is perhaps the largest annual chess team tournament in the Americas.
This year's U.S. Amateur Team East was held in Parsipanny, New Jersey and featured a near-record turnout of over 1,050 players in 253 four-player teams. This was especially encouraging considering all the losses American Chess has had in the year, not the least of which was the death of chess teacher Jack Collins a few months ago. However, his legacy endures: there were 24 "Collins Kids" teams at this year's Team East.
In this most patriotic year, the U.S. Armed Forces were well represented at the tournament. There were three teams from the West Point military academy, and even a team from the Coast Guard. After performing a brief parade in their dress blues, the West Point cadets easily won the "Best Costumes" contest.
The Team East is a fun event with prizes given for a variety of reasons, like the "Best Team Name" prize which was awarded this year to "Enron's 401k - No Perpetual Check." The "Best Promotional Idea" prize was won by "Up The Exchange Without A Paddle" who preformed a brief musical skit relating the story of the 1972 World Chess Championship sung to the tune of "Gilligan's Island."
However, among the silliness there was much serious chess played. The U.S. Teams are called "Amateur" because the average team rating must be below 2200 USCF, but within those limits anyone can play, and among those competing were former U.S. Champions GM Joel Benjamin, GM Lev Alburt and GM Arthur Bisguier.
The overall winners, with the only perfect 6-0 team score, were "Weera-Family," originally seeded 19th at the start of the event. The team consisted of FM Sunil Weeramantry (Board 2) along with his talented stepsons Hikaru and Asuka Nakamura (Boards 1 and 3) along with fourth board Michael Ellenbogen.
Second place with 5 1/2 were "Retired and Rising Stars," consisting of GM Gennadi Zaitchik, Mike Khodarkovsky, Mac Molnar, and Sean Finn. Third, also with 5 1/2, was "UTD Team B" who came all the way from the University of Texas at Dallas. Team members were GM Yuri Shulman, Andrew Whatley, Yekaterina Ushakova and Katie Roberts-Hoffman.

The Hastings International Chess Congress 2002-3 will include a Premier Tournament.
At a Full Council Meeting of Hastings Borough Council, held last week at Hastings Town Hall it was agreed by an all-party vote that the funding for Hastings International Chess Congress 2002-03 be increased by up to a further £7,000 over and above the £25,740 already allocated.
This increase means that, although still sustaining a cut in budget from last year, the Premier Tournament, which would have been cut from the next Congress, can now go ahead and Hastings can still retain its traditional claim as a world class chess event.
A number of Hastings Chess Club and Congress Committee members attended the meeting and there was delight and relief all round when this amendment was announced during the Budget debate.
As well as securing the Premier for the forthcoming event, this reprieve means that all efforts can now go into securing a commercial sponsor for all or part of the Congress. It is still crucial that commercial sponsorship is found but the having the confidence of the Borough Council and one of the best chess venues in the country, the organisers feel there is now a better chance of finding sponsorship than has existed for some years.
Plans are already underway for the next event which will include the Premier, Challengers and other events as usual and anyone keen to participate can find contact details on the congress web-site http://hastingschess.org.uk
