The FIDE World Championships will now surely be won by 18 year old Ruslan Ponomariov. Its four years since he became a Grandmaster and he has continued to improve at an impressive rate since then. He is now just two draws away from the becoming FIDE World Champion. Where will he go from there? You have to feel a bit sorry for Ivanchuk, he has kept his nerves in check for most of the championships but has wrecked chances in the later stages of games two and five when down to using the 30 second increment, a brutal time rate for anyone. Only an amazing comeback can save Ivanchuk's dream. The Corus tournament has produced some great fighting chess and the outcome is still very unclear with 5 rounds to go.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The final of the FIDE World Chess Championships between Vassily Ivanchuk and Ruslan Ponomariov of the Ukraine takes place January 16th-26th 2002. Play on January 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, rest day, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th and on the 25th there will be a playoff if required. The venue is the conference hall of hotel Metropol.
After a very tense week of play in the FIDE Championships 18 year old Ruslan Ponomariov stands on the verge of becoming FIDE World Champion. Game one was a disaster for Ivanchuk, playing a French Defence Ivanchuk was defeated in only 23 moves. Game two was drawn, Ivanchuk almost certainly was winning at one stage. The players were both down to around a minute plus an increment of 30 seconds from move 32. Game three, a Sicilian Defence was drawn in 47 moves. Game four, a Queens Gambit Accepted was drawn in 50 moves by repetition, both players looked very tense indeed. Game five was a Ruy Lopez where Ivanchuk built up a winning advantage. 44. ..Bxe4 was perhaps the clearest win. Ivanchuk's frustration at being unable to break through saw him lose control altogether and go down to a terrible loss in the phase where the players only had 30 seconds per move. The score is 3.5-1.5 to Ponomariov with only three games to go. Ponomariov needs 4.5 points to take the title.
