In autumn of 1999, ChessTiger entered the ranking list of chess programs (SSDF) and immediately topped the list. Apart from ChessTiger 14.0, the CD also contains GambitTiger 2.0. GambitTiger is a particularly aggressive version of ChessTiger which mercilessly attacks the king. Thats why GambitTiger often chooses moves other programs would never play. Recently GambitTiger showed its claws in the Linares of chess programs" and came second behind DeepFritz. In contrast to their direct predecessors, ChessTiger 14.0 and GambitTiger also take advantage of the endgame databases (tablebases) and support multi-variation mode. FIDE master Martin Breutigam includes a small but swell database with 100 entries - 7 texts and 93 sample Another database includes 54 training questions enabling the user to test his freshly acquired knowledge. Furthermore, the CD features a big database of more than 4.000 games as a reference database plus a big tree of all games. Highly-regarded author Grandmaster Neil McDonald offers a comprehensive survey of the state of opening theory for both White and Black players, explaining the basic elements, strategies and tactics for both sides New In Chess Yearbook 58 New In Chess $22.50/£15 Opening preparation is not the first thing that comes to mind when the name of Brain Game World Champion Vladimir Kramnik is brought up. However, with the right ingredients in hand he is more than capable of producing some spicy opening dishes. Have a taste from Kramnik's Kitchen. CHEF DE CUISINE Thanks to Vladimir Kramnik an old line against the Gruenfeld Indian has come back into fashion. Offbeat Spanish Glenn Flear Everyman $21.95/£14.99 Deciding what to do against the Spanish (Ruy Lopez) is a perennial problem for those who play too passively and end up having to face what is known as the 'Spanish Torture'. In this book Grandmaster Glenn Flear studies a wide variety of ambitious and offbeat answers catering for many different playing styles. From the super-solid Berlin (as used so successfully by Vladimir Kramnik in his Brain Games World Championship victory against Garry Kasparov) to the uncompromising Schliemann, there is enough choice here for any prospective black player facing the Spanish For more information: go to

My thanks to John Fernandez, Michael Atkins, Eugeny Atarov, Aard Daanen, Arthur Brameld, Malcolm Armstrong, Peter Sowray, John Hillery, Raimo Vollstaedt, Laszlo Nagy, Miklos Orso and Andres Bacsi, Malcolm Hunt, Vladimir Dvorkovich and all those who helped with this issue.
The FIDE Chess Championships have reached the key stages. With almost all the top seeds still in the event (only Leko of the top 8 has been eliminated) in the last 16 stage the event is still very open. With so many games and so many strong players the women's championships have been almost completely overshadowed. I can't help thinking that its a mistake to hold the two events at the same time. Saturday saw the start of another exciting event. The Botvinnik Memorial takes place 1st-9th December 2001. The key part of the match will be the first four games, played at normal time controls (the rest of the games will be either rapid or blitz). The first game was a disappointment with a short draw. The second game was a big struggle with Kramnik coming close to winning with black. The match is about bragging rights, I'm sure neither player would want to lose the match handing the other some key propaganda over any formal rematch between the two.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The FIDE Championships take place in Moscow November 25th - December 14th 2001 (Kremlin) with the final in the Hall of Columns January 16th-26th 2002.
Schedule for the Kremlin: Round 1 Tuesday-Wednesday November 27th-28th 2001, Round 2 Thursday-Friday November 29th-30th, Round 3 Saturday-Sunday December 1st-2nd, Round 4 Monday and Wednesday 3rd and 5th December, Round 5 Thursday-Friday December 6th-7th, Round 6 Saturday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday December 8th ,10th ,11th ,13th and 14th 2001.
Time limits: All moves in 90 minutes plus an incremental time of 30 seconds per move from move one. Playoff games: 2 games at 20 minutes + 10 seconds per move. If level 2 five-minute games + 10 seconds per move. If still level one sudden death game is played White has 6 minutes, black 5 minutes no increment the winner qualifies for the next round. In case of a draw the player with the black pieces qualifies.
The FIDE Championships started with 128 players last Tuesday. Today (Monday 3rd December) less than a week later there are only 16 left. Karpov's elimination in round 1 by the virtual unknown Zhang Pengxiang may have looked like a shock but Karpov has been in severe decline over the years in particular struggling to win games. He drew both regular time rate games but was eliminated in the rapidplay. Nigel Short was the next highest seed to go in that first round. Anand lost the first game of the champioships but recovered to easily go through. Round 2 saw the biggest surprise of the event so far when Ashot Anastasian defeated Peter Leko. Thus far Leko is the only top 8 seed to be eliminated. In the same round Judit Polgar went out to Vadim Milov. Round 3 again saw few surprises. Alexei Shirov struggled past Alexander Motylev in the playoffs and Khalifman went out to Lautier but these don't count as real surprises. The fourth round sees the first big matches with Veselin Topalov playing Alexei Shirov, Anand playing Dreev, Adams playing Svidler and Ruslan Ponomariov taking on Alexander Morozevich, any result in these matches wouldn't count as a total surprise.
On a sadder note Eugeny Atarov reports: "During the Championships fundraising has begun for the Ukranian Chess Player Vladimir Malaniuk. One of the most colourful players on the chess stage of last two decades, Vladimir has become severely ill and he has already had several operations, one more at least is still necessary. Money for treatment has run out. Contact Eugeny Atarov for more details: atarov@rambler.ru"

Raimo Vollstaedt reports: The team of Heiligenhaus retired from the Women Bundesliga. Their first to rounds would annuled. Most important game of the 4th round was Hamburg - Dresden, both teams before with 6-0 matchpoints. This match won Dresden safe and has now good chances to win the Bundesliga. But still 7 rounds to go, if Dresden will made any mistake the former champion Emsdetten will be there with only 2 matchpoints behind the leader at time. Emsdetten won their first match against Halle after 2 lost games in the past, so Halle is still the only team in Germany with a positive score against the Emsdetten team.

Tom Hendricks reports: On July 5, 2001, Chinese IM Yin Hao (2576) will begin play against the World Team in an Internet correspondence chess game. This will be a rematch of the game they played last year. That game, which began July 5th, 2000 and ended January 18, 2001, was a 44-move struggle ending in a draw. This time colors will be reversed with Yin Hao now being white and the World Team black. As he was in the first game, Yin Hao will be assisted by U.S. correspondence player Richard Fleming (2404). The first game attracted World Team players from Brazil, Canada, England, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland and the United States. Most of these players first came together during the Kasparov vs. The World game held in 1999. The upcoming game is open to anyone who wishes to play and is willing to follow the basic guidelines of the World Team. Players of all skill levels are welcome. General game topics and specific strategy are discussed at a moderated board found at:
