Chess Tiger 14.0

Christoph Théron's ChessTigerhas gained enormously in strength over the past few years as its impressive victories in several international tournaments have demonstrated. In autumn of 1999, ChessTiger entered the ranking list of chess programs (SSDF) and immediately topped the list. Apart from ChessTiger 14.0, the CD also contains GambitTiger 2.0. GambitTiger is a particularly aggressive version of ChessTiger which mercilessly attacks the king. Thats why GambitTiger often chooses moves other programs would never play. Recently GambitTiger showed its claws in the Linares of chess programs" and came second behind DeepFritz. In contrast to their direct predecessors, ChessTiger 14.0 and GambitTiger also take advantage of the endgame databases (tablebases) and support multi-variation mode.

The Chigorin Defence by Martin Breutigam At master level, the Chigorin Defence has seldom been played and probably thats why it has been less analysed than other openings - good prerequisites for freethinkers and adventurers on the chess board!“ (Breutigam) The Chigorin Defence resulting after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nc6 has become popular again thanks to Alexander Morozevich who with has been holding his own even against the best. FIDE master Martin Breutigam includes a small but swell database with 100 entries - 7 texts and 93 sample Another database includes 54 training questions enabling the user to test his freshly acquired knowledge. Furthermore, the CD features a big database of more than 4.000 games as a reference database plus a big tree of all games. System requirements: Pentium, Windows 95,98,2000,Me RRP: £17.95 / $27

Main Line Caro-Kann Neil McDonald Everyman $21.95/£14.99 The Caro Kann has always been one of the most widely played openings among club and tournament players. This handy battle manual deal with the critical main line positions after 1 e4 c6 2 d4 d5 3 Nc3 dxe4 4 Nxe4. Highly-regarded author Grandmaster Neil McDonald offers a comprehensive survey of the state of opening theory for both White and Black players, explaining the basic elements, strategies and tactics for both sides

New In Chess Yearbook 58 New In Chess $22.50/£15 Opening preparation is not the first thing that comes to mind when the name of Brain Game World Champion Vladimir Kramnik is brought up. However, with the right ingredients in hand he is more than capable of producing some spicy opening dishes. Have a taste from Kramnik's Kitchen. CHEF DE CUISINE Thanks to Vladimir Kramnik an old line against the Gruenfeld Indian has come back into fashion.

Offbeat Spanish Glenn Flear Everyman $21.95/£14.99 Deciding what to do against the Spanish (Ruy Lopez) is a perennial problem for those who play too passively and end up having to face what is known as the 'Spanish Torture'. In this book Grandmaster Glenn Flear studies a wide variety of ambitious and offbeat answers catering for many different playing styles. From the super-solid Berlin (as used so successfully by Vladimir Kramnik in his Brain Games World Championship victory against Garry Kasparov) to the uncompromising Schliemann, there is enough choice here for any prospective black player facing the Spanish

1) Introduction

My thanks to Rolf Sander, Pablo Sierra, Walter Bichsel, Eugeny Atarov, Mikhail Golubev, Ales Drinovec, Milen Petrov, Laszlo Nagy and Vlad Barsi, Miklos Orso, Herman Claudius van Riemsdijk, Roberto Alvarez, Albert Silver, Adolivio Capece, Marco Pagnoncelli, Aard Daanen and all those who helped with this issue.

There are a number of nice events this week. The World Team Championships in Yerevan, the Spanish Team Championships and the Essent tournament in Hoogeveen (which has seen Korchnoi start with 2/2). Without doubt the most astonishing event of the week was Karpov's decision to play the FIDE Championships. This leaves the 3Ks tournament which takes place at the same time dead in the water. This after Karpov had already taken part in the press conference announcing the event. The obvious solution is for Kasparov and Kramnik to play a short match instead, its hard to know who that would favour, I guess the winner! Both Kramnik and Kasparov will have to calculate whether they think they might win such a match.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

3) Karpov to play FIDE Championships

""The time is right for me to make a comeback", Karpov said. "I celebrated my 50th birthday this year with close to 2000 guests at the Bolshoi Theatre and many of my friends encouraged me to make this move. My recent victory at the Najdorf Memorial Cup in Buenos Aires has inspired me to seek the title again."

"I brought the title back to Russia from the West in 1975. Now in 2001 I feel it is my duty to wrest the crown from the East and take it back to Mother Russia.”

He added that defending Champion “Anand had the home court advantage then. Now I shall have the edge since the World Championship is in Russia,”

So what about the 3Ks tournament scheduled at the same time? Karpov said, "I approached Organizing Committee to co-ordinate another date at the beginning of next year. I strongly support the idea of that tournament in honour of great M. Botvinnik."

11) Bundesliga 2001-2

The first two rounds of the Bundesliga took place on October 6th-7th 2001. This year's event was hit by the withdrawal of Magdeburg only a few weeks before the start of the season. Round one saw a key match between defending champions Luebeck and last year's runners up Porz. The result was a 4.5-3.5 win for Luebeck. There were just three decisive results with Shirov and Bareev winning for Luebeck and Vaganian beating Epishin for Porz. Last week I published the games from Godesberg (Bonn) and Werder Bremen. This week all the games from Castrop Rauxel are available. Half the matches from Magdeburg (Neukolln vs. Solingen and Heiligenhaus vs. Neukolln) are available missing are the matches Magdeburg - SC Heiligenhaus and Solingen - Magdeburg. Also missing are the round 5 games from SV Wattenscheid and Castrop Rauxel which was held the day before the official start of the season.

18) FIDE Internet Qualifiers

The FIDE Internet qualifiers are coming to a conclusion. There are eight places for the FIDE Chess Championships available. Quite who takes the final places could be very interesting. However I'm getting more and more complaints about the organisation of the event following on from the complaints of Epishin last week. One GM ended his E-Mail by saying "I tried all I could do to qualify without cheating and I'm not interested (this time at least !) in playing advanced chess. I now will stop playing because it makes no sense."

Another competitor outlined the problems starting his E-Mail by saying "The world's first ever advanced chess swiss system tournament. Horrible horrible stuff."

He continued "At least 90% of the participants are cheating, using computers, or teams of GMs . Everyone's using a computer. However, FIDE hasn't forfeited a soul for computer cheating. Practically all of my 15 opponents so far used computers." This in spite of assurances that there would be anti-computer controls at the later stages.

He added the $39 entry fee which you pay by credit card was accepted in Zambia.

"The format is absurd. Play in a playing zone, play in a 102 player 9 round swiss, then a 64 player 8 round swiss? What sense is that?? To boot, FIDE kept changing it's own rules, adding players to the swiss. The pairings were usually wrong, and there were many server problems."

In addition players have been defaulted without playing a move unable to connect to the server. There are all sorts of bugs with the software one player losing a game on time in spite of the board having King vs. King. The time control is 25 minutes + 15 seconds per move which is practically a cheaters charter. One added "You can't have an increment greater than 5 seconds in an online prize tournament. It's too easy to use a computer in that time frame."

19) 6th Wichern Open

The 75th Anniversary of the Barmbek Chess Club in Hamburg sees the 6th Wichern Open take place 13th-21st October 2001. Playing venue: Sports Hall of Wichern Schule in Hamburg (same place as in 1999).

Rolf Sander reports: The 6th Wichern Open is being held to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Barmbek chess club in Hamburg. Although some invited players cancelled their participation at the last moment before the tournament 65 GMs and 6 IMs are in the field. 187 players participate in two groups (below 1800 national rating and open to all). After two rounds most of the favorites are leading the field with two points, although GM Bischoff drew in the first round against Claus Czeremin (Elo 2075 and a strong problem solver). Players include: Mathias Womacka, Vasilios Kotronias, Pavel Kotsur, Aleksei Lugovoi, Abdulla Al-Rakib, Alik Gershon, and Klaus Bischoff.

Yin Hao+ vs. World Team (The Rematch)

Tom Hendricks reports: On July 5, 2001, Chinese IM Yin Hao (2576) will begin play against the World Team in an Internet correspondence chess game. This will be a rematch of the game they played last year. That game, which began July 5th, 2000 and ended January 18, 2001, was a 44-move struggle ending in a draw. This time colors will be reversed with Yin Hao now being white and the World Team black. As he was in the first game, Yin Hao will be assisted by U.S. correspondence player Richard Fleming (2404). The first game attracted World Team players from Brazil, Canada, England, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland and the United States. Most of these players first came together during the Kasparov vs. The World game held in 1999. The upcoming game is open to anyone who wishes to play and is willing to follow the basic guidelines of the World Team. Players of all skill levels are welcome. General game topics and specific strategy are discussed at a moderated board found at:

http://boards.gamers.com/messages/overview.asp?name=WTChess&page=1

Visit the site and review the Game Rules and Move Selection Rules. To participate you must both register with gamers.com AND click on 'Request Password' at the top of the strategy board page. Registration with gamers.com is the process of selecting your UserName and Password. When you click on 'Request Password' you will be e-mailed another password that is specific to the strategy board. You will need to enter it only the first time that you post to the board. Those of you who participated in the first game with Yin Hao need not request the board password - it remains the same.

Book prizes and ICC (Internet Chess Club) memberships will be awarded throughout the game to lucky members of the World Team. So come and join the fun. Additional information can be obtained by writing to tahiv@hotmail.com
