A wide range of events this week, not much time for any comment! Hope you enjoy this issue. Mark 2) PCA Classic Lord Novgorod The Great 95 ------------------------------------------ This event ended in a four way tie as Kasparov continued to draw out the tournament after a magnificent start. In the last round two of his closest pursuers "blew up" when Ivanchuk wrecked a nice position and Kramnik sacced a piece which Ehlvest calmly accepted and consolidated his position. Timerate: 40 in 2 hours; 20 in 1 hour; 30 minutes to finish. Prizefund: $122,500 Distributed as follows: 1st - $30.000 6th - $9.000 2nd - $20.000 7th - $8.000 3rd - $15.000 8th - $7.000 4th - $12.000 9th - $6.000 5th - $10.000 10th - $5.000 The Last PCA Classic of the year is the "Credit Swiss Masters", Zurich, 21.10.95 - 2.11.95. In round 2 Serper probably beat Yasinsky. In round 4 Definitely Serper-Filippov 1/2-1/2 (Serper's name was corrupted in the original) In round 5 Filippov probably drew with Galliamova. (I've used this suggestion of Kevin's) I rather arbitrarily seperated the two Iljinskii and two Gavrilov,Alexei sets of games. I've left in the TPR's but in many cases they don't mean that much. NN are players names I couldn't read. Efremov and Havanov probably didn't complete the event. There would have been some bye;s floating about. 4) Sigeman Wernbro & Co Grandmaster Tournament by Piotr Nestorow ------------------------------------------------------------- My thanks to Piotr Nestorow for the games and results. Both events ended in the first third of May with good results for, most of all, norwegian players, as the chessjournalist-turned-player IM Jonathan Tisdall finally reached ELO 2500 and so was awarded the GM-title. The winner of the GM-group was Swedish IM Stellan Brynell who made his first GM-norm. And in the IM-group Erik Fossan scored his final IM norm.Campos and Pedro are both African Junior Champions and IMs with an ELO of 2200. Gausdal (NOR), 1995. GM Group cat. This seems only to help the opponent, but it has a hidden goal - to attract bK on an the square where it is exposed to future attacks. Kxg4 2.Kg7 Re8 3.Kf7 Rh8 4.Ke7 Rg8 4...h5 5.Nd8 Rh7 6.Nf7 controlling h8 square 5.Nd8 Rg7+ 6.Nf7 Rg8 7.Nh6+ Only now the first move comes to fruition as wN wins the rook. It is important to notice that g4 could not be played to win at any later time, for example, 1.Kg7 Re8 2.g4 h6 draws. Note also the economy of means, only 7 pieces, a miniature. Quite extraordinary for a 16 years old. It is of interest to follow the development in this study. It was published in the same year, 1925, with three additional introductory moves, and the same material. +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | | S.Kaminer, Shakhmaty, 1925-II +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | o | 2nd Prize +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | + | | | | | | K | W: Kh6,Nd5,p.b6,g2 (4) +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | N | | r | | | B: Ke3,Rf5,p.h7 (3) +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | | White to move and win +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | k | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | + | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ Solution 1.b7 Rf8 2.Nb4+ Ke4(3) 3.Nc6 Kf4 4.g4! etc as before.
