In autumn of 1999, ChessTiger entered the ranking list of chess programs (SSDF) and immediately topped the list. Apart from ChessTiger 14.0, the CD also contains GambitTiger 2.0. GambitTiger is a particularly aggressive version of ChessTiger which mercilessly attacks the king. Thats why GambitTiger often chooses moves other programs would never play. Recently GambitTiger showed its claws in the Linares of chess programs" and came second behind DeepFritz. In contrast to their direct predecessors, ChessTiger 14.0 and GambitTiger also take advantage of the endgame databases (tablebases) and support multi-variation mode. FIDE master Martin Breutigam includes a small but swell database with 100 entries - 7 texts and 93 sample Another database includes 54 training questions enabling the user to test his freshly acquired knowledge. However, with the right ingredients in hand he is more than capable of producing some spicy opening dishes. Have a taste from Kramnik's Kitchen. CHEF DE CUISINE Thanks to Vladimir Kramnik an old line against the Gruenfeld Indian has come back into fashion. Offbeat Spanish Glenn Flear Everyman $21.95/£14.99 Deciding what to do against the Spanish (Ruy Lopez) is a perennial problem for those who play too passively and end up having to face what is known as the 'Spanish Torture'. In this book Grandmaster Glenn Flear studies a wide variety of ambitious and offbeat answers catering for many different playing styles. From the super-solid Berlin (as used so successfully by Vladimir Kramnik in his Brain Games World Championship victory against Garry Kasparov) to the uncompromising Schliemann, there is enough choice here for any prospective black player facing the Spanish For more information: go to

A tense final round in the British Championships saw Joe Gallagher take the title. This week there have been more national and continental events starting with the French, Asian and Amerian Continental Championships. The WDR TV game was not the classic it was last year and saw Anand (a replacement for Kramnik who is preparing for his match against Deep Fritz) draw with Leko. The draw with black should mean Anand is invited back to defend next year.
Hope you enjoy this issue

Jovan Petronic reports: Two invitational IM tournaments were held in Tianjin (China) last month (15-27.VII 2001) 12 players from Mongolia, Yugoslavia, China and Singapore competed for rating and FIDE norms. The first tournament was won by the Chinese Olympic representative from Ellista 1998, IM Yu Shaoteng, the second tournament by the Yugoslavian IM Jovan Petronic. Ning Chunhong (China) won two WGM and two IM norms, Wang Yue (China) one IM norm, Chan Peng-Kong (Singapore) won his second and final IM norm. the 6 prizes were divided according to the overall 22 round result, the winner being IM Yu Shaoteng. The new FIDE time control was used (75 min. for 40 moves, then 15 minutes 'till end + 30 sec. bonus after each move from move one). All in all, an exausting 22 round chess event. The Chinese Chess Federation was the perfect host for the foreign players. They assured us they will do their best to make chess a medal sport on the Summer Olympic games in Beijing 2008! IM Tan Lian Ann from Singapore was the main sponsor of the tournaments.

The 1st Asean International Open Chess Championships took place 29th July - 5th August, 2001 in Brunei, Darussalam. This was the first international chess event in Negara Brunei Darussalam. Ian Rogers took clear first place in this nine round Swiss System event. Senador, Irwanto and 13-year-old Megaranto all scored IM norms.
An improved version of the file in TWIC last week has been produced by Ian Rogers, it includes extra games, better naming and corrected game scores. A couple of notes, the FIDE rating list has Megararanto instead of Magaranto and doesn't have a first name for Irwanto (it is Sadikin).

Eirik T. Gullaksen reports: GMs Arthur Kogan (ISR 2517) and Evgenij Agrest (SWE 2529) shared first place in the second Bergen Chess International, played in Norway 4th-12th August 2001. Both scored eight points from nine games, with impressive rating performances of 2760 (Kogan) and 2730 (Agrest). The tournament had the status of Nordic Championship 2001 and being the best Nordic player (NOR/SWE/FIN/DEN/ISL/FAI) Agrest won the title of Nordic Champion 2001. In third place with seven points came the best Norwegian player, IM Leif Erlend Johannessen (2426). Top seed GM Vladimir Georgiev (BUL 2584) had to settle for 5.5 points and a somewhat disappointing shared 16th place. The tournament had 94 participants, including 8 GMs and 13 IMs. There were 9 women playing, which must be a new record in a Norwegian tournament. Arnar Gunnarson of Iceland made an IM-norm and Katarzyna Toma of Poland a WIM-norm.

Anjo Anjewierden reports: The first Stork Young Masters has been an enormous success. The event was organised to provide an opportunity for young chess players to achieve an IM-norm. Jan Werle (NED), Joost Berkvens (NED) and Jana Jackova (CZE) scored 5,5 / 9 in the category 7 Round Robin. For Jan and Joost this was their 3rd and final norm. Jana also scored her final WGM-norm. The tournament was won by Zahar Efimenko (UKR) with 6 points.
The Young Masters was part of the Dutch junior open championships. Nearly 400 children played 6-11 August in the townhall of Hengelo. The U20 was won by Steven Geirnaert (BEL), the U16 saw a surprising victory by a girl: Laura Bensdorp (NED). In the two youngest groups the winners were: Matthew Tan (NED; U14) and Ali Bitalzadeh (NED; U12).
Next year the tournament will be held 5-10 August 2002. We hereby invite strong young players (2400 and over) to contact us at webmaster@schaakbond.nl

David Cohen the organiser of the 10th Canadian Women's Championships Zonal 2.2 reports on the event. Canadian WIM Nava Starr was the winner of the 10th Canadian Women's Championship, also the 2001 Women's Championship for FIDE Zone 2.2, held August 4-6 in Toronto, Canada. Mrs. Starr, who scored 5.5/6, won her eighth Canadian Championship, a record she shares with Maurice Fox, GM Abe Yanofsky (CAN Ch); and GM Kevin Spraggett (CAN Op Ch). Starr qualifies to the Americas Women's Continental Championship 2001, along with second place finisher Amanda Benggawan (4/6), who defeated WFM Stefanie Chu in a playoff. Of interest to the spectators were the many upsets in the field of 18 players scored by the 12 juniors, including a defeat of WIM Vesma Baltgailis on time by 9 year old Hazel Smith. The final playoff game between Chu and Benggawan was played at Game/30 with 10 second increment, and Benggawan won on time.

European Open Rapid and Blitz Championships have been cancelled. They were to have taken place August 28th - September 2nd, 2001, Sopot, Poland
The board of the Polish Chess Federation was forced to cancel the European Rapid and Blitz Championships that were prepared for a period from August 28 till September 2, 2001 in Sopot. There are two reasons of the cancellation: - Sponsors withdraw their support of the Championships because of damages made by the big float in the very big part of Poland including very strong rain in the city of Gdansk. A lot of Polish people lost houses and all belongings, - Organizers informed our Federation that 24 players only announced their participation in the mentioned Championships until the deadline of the 1st of August 2001.

Tom Hendricks reports: On July 5, 2001, Chinese IM Yin Hao (2576) will begin play against the World Team in an Internet correspondence chess game. This will be a rematch of the game they played last year. That game, which began July 5th, 2000 and ended January 18, 2001, was a 44-move struggle ending in a draw. This time colors will be reversed with Yin Hao now being white and the World Team black. As he was in the first game, Yin Hao will be assisted by U.S. correspondence player Richard Fleming (2404). The first game attracted World Team players from Brazil, Canada, England, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland and the United States. Most of these players first came together during the Kasparov vs. The World game held in 1999. The upcoming game is open to anyone who wishes to play and is willing to follow the basic guidelines of the World Team. Players of all skill levels are welcome. General game topics and specific strategy are discussed at a moderated board found at:
http://boards.gamers.com/messages/overview.asp?name=WTChess&page=1
Visit the site and review the Game Rules and Move Selection Rules. To participate you must both register with gamers.com AND click on 'Request Password' at the top of the strategy board page. Registration with gamers.com is the process of selecting your UserName and Password. When you click on 'Request Password' you will be e-mailed another password that is specific to the strategy board. You will need to enter it only the first time that you post to the board. Those of you who participated in the first game with Yin Hao need not request the board password - it remains the same.
Book prizes and ICC (Internet Chess Club) memberships will be awarded throughout the game to lucky members of the World Team. So come and join the fun. Additional information can be obtained by writing to tahiv@hotmail.com
