In autumn of 1999, ChessTiger entered the ranking list of chess programs (SSDF) and immediately topped the list. Apart from ChessTiger 14.0, the CD also contains GambitTiger 2.0. GambitTiger is a particularly aggressive version of ChessTiger which mercilessly attacks the king. Thats why GambitTiger often chooses moves other programs would never play. Recently GambitTiger showed its claws in the Linares of chess programs" and came second behind DeepFritz. In contrast to their direct predecessors, ChessTiger 14.0 and GambitTiger also take advantage of the endgame databases (tablebases) and support multi-variation mode. Korchnoi scored a victory in the Biel tournament at the age of 70, a fantastic achievement. FIDE are reported close to announcing the venues for their World Championships, Monte Carlo, Cannes and in the case of the final match London are in the frame. The British Chess Championships continue, its close at the top at the half way point and all to play for.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The 34th Biel International Chess Festival takes place July 21st-August 4th with a strong Open, other tournaments and a strong GM Tournament. 70 year old Viktor Korchnoi took clear first in the main GM event at the Biel Chess Festival half a point clear of last year's champion Peter Svidler. Only Korchnoi and Pelletier did better than their ratings, Gelfand, Lautier and Grischuk were all big losers of rating points. Korchnoi's win is probably the greatest achievement by a player of his age. Given that he keeps himself fit and he still works at his game there is no reason to suppose that Korchnoi can't surpass this in the future.
Sinisa Joksic reports on the Main Open in Biel. The event was, as always, an attractive one for chess players. Good prizes and excellent chances to pick up a title are the hooks for the chess players. Nowadays, things have changed a little bit. There is a tie-break after Round 9 and the chance of the four first prizes are gone to the majority of the field. The Tie-break system is always a little random. After a regular game comes two Rapid (15 minutes) games if required, then two blitz games and if the match still hasn't been decided a sudden death game! Boris Avrukh won the tournament beating Mihail Kobalija in blitz 1.5:0.5. For the third place Vadim Milov beat Ramesh of India 2:0 in the Rapid. Altogether 108 players competed. The playing conditions were very hard as the temperature outside almost climbed over 30 degrees and in the event there was very strong competititon. Next year Biels Chess Festival will go back to the Congress Center. The 35th Chess Festival will be from July 20th-August 3, 2002 during SWISS EKSPO.

The 20th Ciudad de Linares International Chess Tournament will be held in Hotel Anibal, Linares, from February 23 till March, 2002. The Tournament is organised by the Town Council of Linares.
The 9th Anibal Chess Open will be held in the same period, from March 1st- 10th 2002, 10 rounds, also in the Hotel Anibal, the Sponsor of this event.
The Ciudad de Ubeda Chess Open will not take place in 2002.
According to a report by Leontxo García in El Pais 3rd August 2001 the final match of the FIDE World Chess Championships are likely to be in London taking place January 2nd to January 12th 2002. This is said to be the strong preference of the Championship's marketing company Octagon. FIDE hope that all the other matches (up to and including the semi-finals) in the knockout event will be held November 25th to December 12th 2001 in either Monte Carlo (seems to be the first choice) or Cannes. Negotiations are taking place this weekend between FIDE President Kirsan Iljumzhinov and interested parties. The sticking point seems to be that both Monte Carlo and Cannes wish to hold the final too, not take what might be seen as just a qualifier for the main event. However as Iljumzhinov is personally contributing slightly more than $3m to the prizefund as opposed to only $400,000 from the organisers he seems in a position to get his way.

Tuesday, 31st July saw a press conference at the Galleria Suite, Chelsea Village, Fulham Road. London SW6.
The salubrious Galleria Suite overlooking the pitch at Chelsea Football Club was the elegant venue for the Man v Machine press conference. Considering it was billed as being bigger than the Thriller In Manila, and hotter than the Rumble in The Jungle, proceedings got off to a slow start - by 11.30 am (the event was due to start at 11.00) there was no sign of any of the celebrities. Where were all the football stars? And the boxers? More to the point, where was Big Vlad? Surely he hadnt taken them all out clubbing the night before? Still, at least Ray Keene had made it.
Suddenly though, it all kicked off (pun intended) and to the usual fanfare that accompanies your average chess competition (loud music, strobe lights, smoke simulations etc) Ray Keene, Franz Morsch (the Fritz programmer) and Vladimir Kramnik made their way on stage to speak about the match. The first interesting thing that was revealed was that the games in the match are to be adjourned after sixty moves, a revelation that provoked some surprise from the audience. Whilst a logical idea, it could lead to the strange situation whereby Vladimir can use his own opponent to prepare for the resumption of the game ! Both sides seemed upbeat about their chances, Franz Morsch saying the main difference between this version of Fritz compared to its predecessors did not lie so much in greater chess knowledge but more due to the machines newfound ability to deal with anti-computer chess strategy, and to learn from its mistakes. He also said that he believed that this incarnation of Fritz is every bit as strong as the Deep Blue II that defeated Kasparov and has far greater "chess knowledge".
Kramnik meanwhile said that he very much wanted to win because: " I (Kramnik) feel that after the Kasparov Deep Blue Match in 1997 the computer is already stronger than the best human chess-player in the mind of the public and I want to prove that this is not the case." He also said that his preparations for the match would begin on the 1st August and involve one month of "experimentation" followed by a month of planning match strategy with his new knowledge of the computer. When asked how he was planning to celebrate victory in the match, Vlad, serene as always, pointed out that he didnt want to think about that, as it would then be likely that he would end up with nothing to celebrate ! He certainly looked like a man that was taking the match seriously. Then came a few more words from Ray Keene about the format of the match before Vladimir, Nigel Benn and a few chess die-hards adjourned to the car-park for a photo-shoot, while the less energetically inclined amongst us preferred to stay and enjoy more drinks and caviar in the Galleria Suite.
The eight game match will take place in Le Royal Meridiene Hotel in Manama, Bahrain, 12th October - 1st November, with the host, Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Issa al-Khaleifa offering $1 million to Kramnik if he wins, $800,000 if he draws and $600,000 if he loses.

Source of games http://linta.com. My thanks to Thomas Henrich who translated the names into English and to Yin Hao for other details.
Last week I had the name Yuan Lufei in the women's zonal, it is in fact Ruan Lufei so below is a corrected table and the games are given again (I corrected this after a day so maybe you didn't download the early version of the file). There may be similar problems with the team championships but with no ratings given in the file it wasn't possible to carry out detailed checks.

Willy Iclicki reports on the release of the fifth rapid rating list which includes tournaments like Cannes, Mainz, Monaco, Zurich, Tallinn, European Individual Championship tie-breaks and some national championships and private tournaments or matches.
At the top, in spite of the loss of four points, Michael Adams has managed to keep his first place thanks to an impressive come back in Mainz. Anand has lost his second place to Kasparov due to mediocre result in Monaco ( and the fact the final cross table of the Marabal tournament in Spain wasn't submitted an event which he won. Did this result cost him the first place?). Kasparov kept his rating. He played well in Cannes but his defeat to Kramnik in Zurich probably cost him the top place. Gelfand and Kramnik both saw their ratings rise and the World's Best Junior is Etienne Bacrot who is now in 12th. Next year FIDE is also planing a Rapid GP.

Tom Hendricks reports: On July 5, 2001, Chinese IM Yin Hao (2576) will begin play against the World Team in an Internet correspondence chess game. This will be a rematch of the game they played last year. That game, which began July 5th, 2000 and ended January 18, 2001, was a 44-move struggle ending in a draw. This time colors will be reversed with Yin Hao now being white and the World Team black. As he was in the first game, Yin Hao will be assisted by U.S. correspondence player Richard Fleming (2404). The first game attracted World Team players from Brazil, Canada, England, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland and the United States. Most of these players first came together during the Kasparov vs. The World game held in 1999. The upcoming game is open to anyone who wishes to play and is willing to follow the basic guidelines of the World Team. Players of all skill levels are welcome. General game topics and specific strategy are discussed at a moderated board found at:
http://boards.gamers.com/messages/overview.asp?name=WTChess&page=1
Visit the site and review the Game Rules and Move Selection Rules. To participate you must both register with gamers.com AND click on 'Request Password' at the top of the strategy board page. Registration with gamers.com is the process of selecting your UserName and Password. When you click on 'Request Password' you will be e-mailed another password that is specific to the strategy board. You will need to enter it only the first time that you post to the board. Those of you who participated in the first game with Yin Hao need not request the board password - it remains the same.
Book prizes and ICC (Internet Chess Club) memberships will be awarded throughout the game to lucky members of the World Team. So come and join the fun. Additional information can be obtained by writing to tahiv@hotmail.com
