In autumn of 1999, ChessTiger entered the ranking list of chess programs (SSDF) and immediately topped the list. Apart from ChessTiger 14.0, the CD also contains GambitTiger 2.0. GambitTiger is a particularly aggressive version of ChessTiger which mercilessly attacks the king. Thats why GambitTiger often chooses moves other programs would never play. Recently GambitTiger showed its claws in the Linares of chess programs" and came second behind DeepFritz. In contrast to their direct predecessors, ChessTiger 14.0 and GambitTiger also take advantage of the endgame databases (tablebases) and support multi-variation mode. CHEF DE CUISINE Thanks to Vladimir Kramnik an old line against the Gruenfeld Indian has come back into fashion. Offbeat Spanish Glenn Flear Everyman $21.95/£14.99 Deciding what to do against the Spanish (Ruy Lopez) is a perennial problem for those who play too passively and end up having to face what is known as the 'Spanish Torture'. In this book Grandmaster Glenn Flear studies a wide variety of ambitious and offbeat answers catering for many different playing styles. From the super-solid Berlin (as used so successfully by Vladimir Kramnik in his Brain Games World Championship victory against Garry Kasparov) to the uncompromising Schliemann, there is enough choice here for any prospective black player facing the Spanish For more information: go to

Just what you don't need on a hot magazine day, the FIDE rating list. Nevertheless its interesting. In the next list you will probably need to be over 2600 to be in the top 100, that used to be the mark for candidates class. Now there are 14 players at 2700 or over. Any chance of changing GM norms to a 2700 performance and a rating over 2600, thought not... FIDE's communique doesn't say where the next FIDE championships will be but only mentions that the United Arab Emirates are in the running. They also talk about a new rating system which I presume should be more accurately called the new ranking system unless there is a change I haven't heard about. The next FIDE Congress looks likely to vote on the new faster time control as being the only one allowed. Could this lead to a fatal split in FIDE? I doubt it, when all said and done the Federations have a strong track record of caving in no matter how strongly they claim to feel about things beforehand.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The Frankfurt Chess Classic rapid tournament moved to Mainz with a new sponsor Landesbank Rheinland-Pfalz and the support of the chess playing mayor of Mainz Mayor Beutel. Anand and Kramnik tied a ten game rapid play match 5-5, Anand won the playoff 1.5-0.5 (time rate 5 minutes plus 5 seconds per move).
The format was slightly different last year the time limit was 25 minutes per game, but this time Kramnik insisted on 10 extra seconds for each move. This was a repeat of the final of the 1998 Chess Classic where Anand beat Kramnik 4:3 after extra games.

Leko won the match 4.5-3.5.
Pocket Fritz runs on handheld computers. Adams beat it 2-0, Leko 1.5-0.5.
On June 23rd Viswanathan Anand played a 40 board simul where he won 36 drew 2 and lost 2 (Michael Tischendorf and Eckhard Freise the latter was Germany's first person to win the top prize on their version of the TV show "Who wants to be a millionaire"). Kramnik was unbeaten in his simul but only won 33 games which turned out to be half a point less than Anand.
The Dutch Championships was held in Leeuwarden 19th-30th June 2001. Van Wely beat Erik van den Doel 3-0 in a play off for the title on Sunday. Peng Zhaoqin easily took the women's title.

The new top 100 FIDE Rating list has been released for April 2001. I've produced the list from their download of all the ratings. The last few lists have been subject to far too many changes shortly after the release of the list.
Kasparov's rating rises 3 points to 2838 and Kramnik is now definitely the second man over 2800 at 2802. Anand at 2794 isn't far behind. There are 14 players over 2700 including former FIDE Champion Alexander Khalifman.
Out of the top 100 are Michal Krasenkow down from 2655 to a shocking 2573, Timman down to 2597, Ftacnik down to 2580, Smagin, Bauer, Sasikiran, Khenkin, Macieja, Palac, Marin, Stutua, Goldin, Rozentalis, Novikov, Kozul, Shabalov and Hodgson (although 2595 was enough to get you in the top 100 last time now its 2598 and this accounts for a number of these players).
Winners include Emil Sutovsky up from 2604 to 2651, Aleksej Aleksandrov, up 36 points, Vallejo Pons up 71 points, Delchev up 55, Pigusov, Chuchleov and Andrei Sokolov were significant gainers also. Losers include Tkachiev down 30, Mikhail Gurevich down 55, Korchnoi down 26, Alexander Graf (Nenashev) down 39 points after his move to Germany, and Ulf Andersson down 39.

Tom Hendricks reports: On July 5, 2001, Chinese IM Yin Hao (2576) will begin play against the World Team in an Internet correspondence chess game. This will be a rematch of the game they played last year. That game, which began July 5th, 2000 and ended January 18, 2001, was a 44-move struggle ending in a draw. This time colors will be reversed with Yin Hao now being white and the World Team black. As he was in the first game, Yin Hao will be assisted by U.S. correspondence player Richard Fleming (2404). The first game attracted World Team players from Brazil, Canada, England, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland and the United States. Most of these players first came together during the Kasparov vs. The World game held in 1999. The upcoming game is open to anyone who wishes to play and is willing to follow the basic guidelines of the World Team. Players of all skill levels are welcome. General game topics and specific strategy are discussed at a moderated board found at:
http://boards.gamers.com/messages/overview.asp?name=WTChess&page=1
Visit the site and review the Game Rules and Move Selection Rules. To participate you must both register with gamers.com AND click on 'Request Password' at the top of the strategy board page. Registration with gamers.com is the process of selecting your UserName and Password. When you click on 'Request Password' you will be e-mailed another password that is specific to the strategy board. You will need to enter it only the first time that you post to the board. Those of you who participated in the first game with Yin Hao need not request the board password - it remains the same.
Book prizes and ICC (Internet Chess Club) memberships will be awarded throughout the game to lucky members of the World Team. So come and join the fun. Additional information can be obtained by writing to tahiv@hotmail.com
