Chess Tiger 14.0

Christoph Théron's ChessTigerhas gained enormously in strength over the past few years as its impressive victories in several international tournaments have demonstrated. In autumn of 1999, ChessTiger entered the ranking list of chess programs (SSDF) and immediately topped the list. Apart from ChessTiger 14.0, the CD also contains GambitTiger 2.0. GambitTiger is a particularly aggressive version of ChessTiger which mercilessly attacks the king. Thats why GambitTiger often chooses moves other programs would never play. Recently GambitTiger showed its claws in the Linares of chess programs" and came second behind DeepFritz. In contrast to their direct predecessors, ChessTiger 14.0 and GambitTiger also take advantage of the endgame databases (tablebases) and support multi-variation mode.

The Chigorin Defence by Martin Breutigam At master level, the Chigorin Defence has seldom been played and probably thats why it has been less analysed than other openings - good prerequisites for freethinkers and adventurers on the chess board!“ (Breutigam) The Chigorin Defence resulting after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nc6 has become popular again thanks to Alexander Morozevich who with has been holding his own even against the best. FIDE master Martin Breutigam includes a small but swell database with 100 entries - 7 texts and 93 sample Another database includes 54 training questions enabling the user to test his freshly acquired knowledge. Furthermore, the CD features a big database of more than 4.000 games as a reference database plus a big tree of all games. System requirements: Pentium, Windows 95,98,2000,Me RRP: £17.95 / $27

Main Line Caro-Kann Neil McDonald Everyman $21.95/£14.99 The Caro Kann has always been one of the most widely played openings among club and tournament players. This handy battle manual deal with the critical main line positions after 1 e4 c6 2 d4 d5 3 Nc3 dxe4 4 Nxe4. Highly-regarded author Grandmaster Neil McDonald offers a comprehensive survey of the state of opening theory for both White and Black players, explaining the basic elements, strategies and tactics for both sides

New In Chess Yearbook 58 New In Chess $22.50/£15 Opening preparation is not the first thing that comes to mind when the name of Brain Game World Champion Vladimir Kramnik is brought up. However, with the right ingredients in hand he is more than capable of producing some spicy opening dishes. Have a taste from Kramnik's Kitchen. CHEF DE CUISINE Thanks to Vladimir Kramnik an old line against the Gruenfeld Indian has come back into fashion.

Offbeat Spanish Glenn Flear Everyman $21.95/£14.99 Deciding what to do against the Spanish (Ruy Lopez) is a perennial problem for those who play too passively and end up having to face what is known as the 'Spanish Torture'. In this book Grandmaster Glenn Flear studies a wide variety of ambitious and offbeat answers catering for many different playing styles. From the super-solid Berlin (as used so successfully by Vladimir Kramnik in his Brain Games World Championship victory against Garry Kasparov) to the uncompromising Schliemann, there is enough choice here for any prospective black player facing the Spanish

2) Mainz Chess Classic

The Frankfurt Chess Classic has moved to Mainz with a new sponsor Landesbank Rheinland-Pfalz and the support of the chess playing mayor of Mainz Mayor Beutel. The highlight will be a match between Kramnik and Anand.

The format is slightly different last year the time limit was 25 minutes per game, but this time Kramnik insisted on 10 extra seconds for each move. This will be a repeat of the final of the 1998 Chess Classic where Anand beat Kramnik 4:3 after extra games.

The CCM programme will also include other highlights between 23 June and 1 July. An eight game rapid chess match of Fischer Random Chess between Michael Adams (England) and Peter Leko (Hungary) will be another first. The event will be supplemented by a match of man versus machine. Chessbase will take on Adams and Leko. There is also an opportunity to play Anand or Kramnik in a simul via an Internet auction at http://www.chesstigers.de. 20 boards from each of the 40 board simuls against Anand (Saturday, 23 June, 6.30 P.M.) and Kramnik (following day, 6.30 P.M.) are available to the highest bidder. The minimum bid is 100 German Marks. There will also be the Chess Classic Mainz and the eleven round Ordix Open (23 and 24 June) when a top-class field competes for prize money amounting to 45,000 German Marks.

The first event was the Ordix Open on June 23rd-24th 2001. The event was won by Michael Adams with 9.5/11 half a point clear of Milov, Eismont, Rublevski, Glek and Lobron.

15) Indian Championships

Dibyendu Barua beat off a strong challenge to win his third National title inn the 37th edition of the National A Chess championships. Both Barua and Krishnan Sasikiran were in line for the title going into the final round. Neither could win and finished tied on 13.5/19. Barua took the title due to a better score calculated on the Koya System. Things were clearer in the women's event with Subbaraman Vijayalakshmi taking clear first. My thanks to V Krishnaswamy for reports during the championships. Most of the games from the men's Championships are now available.

18) 2nd European Chess Championship Ohrid

The 2nd European Chess Championship Ohrid, Macedonia 1st-15th June 2001. The event is a 13 round Swiss System. 143 GMs, 38 IMs and 14FMs competed.

You can read Jaan Ehlvest's comments on the championships at: http://www.ehlvest.com/

The game Epishin-Savchenko blitz playoff game was clearly wrong last week but it is unsavable unless one of the players can come up with the gamescore.

Michal Krasenkow has sent a letter he says is on behalf of a large group of participants of the European Championship in Ohrid. It is called Robbery in Ohrid.

Dear Editor,

I am writing this letter on behalf of a large group of participants of the European Championship in Ohrid, who asked me to do so. The problem is very important and closely connected with the so-called "commercialization" of chess. At the closing ceremony of the Championship some speakers (including ECU President Mr. Boris Kutin) expressed their admiration of the organization of the Championship, playing conditions etc. etc. That was partially true. However, the point is that all that was combined with real fleecing of the players (or their clubs, national federations etc.). Not everybody paid - some players were invited, with no official criteria of invitation set at this official event (for sure it was not rating that counted). But the others had to pay an astronomical (by local criteria) price of 100-130 DM per person per day for their accommodation in the "Desaret" hotel and meals. That was really a special price as the normal price in that hotel is 55-70 DM p.p.p.d. The players were deprived of any choice as they were obliged to stay in "Desaret" if they wanted to participate in the tournament (on what grounds?). By the way, the promise of the organizers that there would be no other guests in the hotel during the Championship was not kept and noise made by various tourists, often at night, hardly helped players in their rest and preparation.

It is easy to calculate that the money made on the players covered most of the organizers' half of the prize fund, so the players were (along with FIDE) the main sponsors of the event. Is it this robbery that they call commercializaton?

Kind regards,

Michal Krasenkow, Gorzow Wlkp., Poland
