In autumn of 1999, ChessTiger entered the ranking list of chess programs (SSDF) and immediately topped the list. Apart from ChessTiger 14.0, the CD also contains GambitTiger 2.0. GambitTiger is a particularly aggressive version of ChessTiger which mercilessly attacks the king. Thats why GambitTiger often chooses moves other programs would never play. Recently GambitTiger showed its claws in the Linares of chess programs" and came second behind DeepFritz. In contrast to their direct predecessors, ChessTiger 14.0 and GambitTiger also take advantage of the endgame databases (tablebases) and support multi-variation mode. My thanks to 64-Chess Review, Victor Karpov, Laszlo Nagy, Koos Stolk and all those who helped with this issue.
The top events this week see Kasparov, Kramnik, Morozevich, Shirov, Gelfand and Sadvakhasov play in Kazakhstan and Anand, Khalifman, Short and Hernandez play in Mexico. Elsewhere FIDE announce a provisional time table for their Grand Prix next year. There was also an interview with Kirsan Ilyumzhinov where he talks about possibilities for a "commercial" match tournament possibly involving Kasparov, Kramnik, Anand and possibly Shirov. He also says "Why should we follow the whims of any individuals, no matter if they are outstanding chess players? FIDE has its Statutes, which should be followed by all chess players of the world." which is a little rich as his election drove a coach and horses through the statutes of FIDE and whim would be a very good word for his policy making. The conflict of interest in being President of FIDE and one of the two major figures in FIDE Commerce would probably be tolerated no-where else. He clearly believes that having bought and paid for the World Chess Federation anything goes.
Hope you enjoy this issue

FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov made a proposal on Monday April 30th 2001 that "Russian Grand masters Vladimir Kramnik and Garry Kasparov face Indian Viswanathan Anand and Spain's Alexei Shirov (who tells me he definitely wasn't contacted), in a bid to bring the championship under one roof". [Read the Times of India on the offer and now Sport-Express Interview with Ilyumzhinov on 13 May 2001. ]. In the Sport-Express Interview Kirsan says "Why should we follow the whims of any individuals, no matter if they are outstanding chess players? FIDE has its Statutes, which should be followed by all chess players of the world." On the match of four he said "Herewith I mean a commercial and not a "unifying" match. I think that such a commercial match will attract the attention of the chess fans and will promote the popularisation of chess throughout the world. But there has been no progress so far, except for the stage of preliminary negotiations."
Also on FIDE's pages they have announced a calendar for their World Chess Grand Prix. Their provisional calendar for the 2002 Grand Prix series. 4th - 18th February 2002 Madrid 8th - 22nd March 2002 Dubai 1st - 15th April 2002 Bombay 7th - 21st May 2002 Amsterdam 2nd - 16th June 2002 London (2002 only, from 2003 Moscow) 2nd - 16th July 2002 Berlin 16th - 30th August 2002 New York 2nd - 16th September 2002 Seattle 21st September - 5th October 2002 Rio de Janeiro (or Buenos-Aires). They add "We also believe that should an existing tournament wish to join the Grand Prix series it would be easy for all parties to cancel the proposed Grand Prix dates and change to the existing tournament. The best example of this is Dortmund. We are in constant communication with the organisers with regards to the year 2003 and if Dortmund joins the Grand Prix series then our proposed Grand Prix in Berlin can easily be cancelled."
