In autumn of 1999, ChessTiger entered the ranking list of chess programs (SSDF) and immediately topped the list. Apart from ChessTiger 14.0, the CD also contains GambitTiger 2.0. GambitTiger is a particularly aggressive version of ChessTiger which mercilessly attacks the king. Thats why GambitTiger often chooses moves other programs would never play. Recently GambitTiger showed its claws in the Linares of chess programs" and came second behind DeepFritz. In contrast to their direct predecessors, ChessTiger 14.0 and GambitTiger also take advantage of the endgame databases (tablebases) and support multi-variation mode. FIDE master Martin Breutigam includes a small but swell database with 100 entries - 7 texts and 93 sample Another database includes 54 training questions enabling the user to test his freshly acquired knowledge. Furthermore, the CD features a big database of more than 4.000 games as a reference database plus a big tree of all games. This handy battle manual deal with the critical main line positions after 1 e4 c6 2 d4 d5 3 Nc3 dxe4 4 Nxe4. Highly-regarded author Grandmaster Neil McDonald offers a comprehensive survey of the state of opening theory for both White and Black players, explaining the basic elements, strategies and tactics for both sides New In Chess Yearbook 58 New In Chess $22.50/£15 Opening preparation is not the first thing that comes to mind when the name of Brain Game World Champion Vladimir Kramnik is brought up. However, with the right ingredients in hand he is more than capable of producing some spicy opening dishes. Have a taste from Kramnik's Kitchen. CHEF DE CUISINE Thanks to Vladimir Kramnik an old line against the Gruenfeld Indian has come back into fashion. Offbeat Spanish Glenn Flear Everyman $21.95/£14.99 Deciding what to do against the Spanish (Ruy Lopez) is a perennial problem for those who play too passively and end up having to face what is known as the 'Spanish Torture'. In this book Grandmaster Glenn Flear studies a wide variety of ambitious and offbeat answers catering for many different playing styles. From the super-solid Berlin (as used so successfully by Vladimir Kramnik in his Brain Games World Championship victory against Garry Kasparov) to the uncompromising Schliemann, there is enough choice here for any prospective black player facing the Spanish For more information: go to

A nice event in Sarajevo warms us up for even nicer ones in first Merida (Anand, Khalifman and Short) and then Kazakhstan (Kasparov, Kramnik, Morozevich, Shirov and Gelfand) this week. Last weekend we saw yet another final weekend of a team championships in Birmingham which saw Svidler and Morozevich amongst others turn up. In Russia Bareev and that man Svidler again along with Bareev play for another team in the finals of the Russian team championships. It should be an interesting week.
On another note, although I haven't got my copies yet, my book Chess on the Net was published Everyman Chess on 11th May 2001. I hope people will like it.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The 54th Russian Chess Championships took place April 29th-May 9th 2001 in Elista. A 9-round Swiss. The prize fund waas $30,000. There were 17 qualifying places (at one point 16 were reported has this changed?) for the European Championships. Alexander Motylev took first on Buchholz tie-break from Alexander Lastin both finished on 6.5/9. In the final round Evgeny Sveshnikov resigned in a drawn position (See Club Kasparov in Russia article in Russian). He evidently offered his resignation on move 62 thinking he was losing his rook but then realised it was in fact stalemate (62. Ka5 Nc4+ 63. Ka4 Rxb8 draw) and withdrew it. He claims that technically he did not offer the resignation and an arbiter asked them to continue. But at the end of the game he resigned because he did not feel right about what happened (they had just passed the 50 move point without a pawn being moved and a piece been captured). Also thanks to Boris Schipkov for some round 1 game corrections.

The finals of the Russian Club Championships started on May 13th 2001 in Tomsk. 12 teams. Players include Bareev and Grischuk (whose team seems to have lost in round 1), Rublevsky and Svidler. Further news as I get it. My thanks to Viktor Karpov.
According to a report in the Independent Newspaper The Mind Sports Olympiad has collapsed with debts totalling £2.5m. According to the report: "Details of a creditors' meeting earlier this month, which have been passed to the Independent on Sunday, show the Olympiad, and an associated website, with debts of nearly £2.5m and assets of less than £10,000." The demise may be a British based event as there are MSO organisations abroad including Japan. One insider told me that he expected the 5th Olympiad this year although probably not in the UK.

The Capablanca Memorial tournament takes place May 3rd-21st 2001. Invited players in the Premier include: Ulf Anderssson, Zhang Zhong, Alexandre Lesiege, Anthony Miles, Francisco Vallejo, Thomas Luther, Igor Alexander Nataf, Hannes Stefansson.
A nice story about Tony Miles comes from Rodolfo Arias. He reports that on his way to the Capablanca memorial in Cuba, the British GM Anthony Miles stopped for a few days in Costa Rica. He probably wanted to keep a low profile (focussing on beaches, volcanos, girls and other national attractions), but as it often happens, there was a friend of a friend of a friend who plays chesss, and Miles was discovered by the local community of Kaissa's followers. A simul display was promptly arranged in a central hotel in San Jose. Miles faced 21 boards, winning 16, drawing 4 and lost only one.
