My thanks to the Novgorod site (see that section) , Frank Kroeze (for a really interesting piece) on the Dutch Student Championships, Bob Wade, Roberto Alvarez, Chris Dunworth, Wlodek Proskurowski (it felt really strange having an issue without him last week!) and Michael Niermann. Enjoy. Mark 2) PCA Classic Lord Novgorod The Great 95 --------------------------------------- Another PCA Classic. Looks like it might be interesting, with Kasparov not in top form. Information about this event came from the site: ftp.infonet.ee/chess or http://www.infonet.ee/chess/index.html Round one came from a textfile, the second round came only in the form of a file that could be viewed with some special software, an odd piece of software at that. Anyhow I'm confident round one's games are OK, round 2 needs checking, not least as I had to type them in. The above site will certainly be worth checking over the next week. Tournament runs May 27th-June 5th. Tournament manager and organizer was Bert Breuker, the same man from the open tournaments in Leeuwarden (VB) and Amsterdam (Donner memorial). Just like last year there were 16 participants, playing a 7 rounds swiss. The timerate was 40 moves/2 hours and then 1 hour KO. Only 1 IM participated this year (Dimitri Reinderman), making him clear favourite. What follows is the tournament as I experienced it. Round 1 ------- Already the first surprises occurred: Kroeze and Tondivar (seeded 2nd and 4th) where very lucky that they managed to draw. Lemmers (seeded 3rd) was not so lucky after his blunder 15.Bf4 and got crushed in 29 moves. Reindermans win was not very convincing either, but his opponent used far too much time for his first 20 moves. Also Van der Weide (seeded 5th) scored a lucky win. Round 2 ------- Reinderman played all his moves within half an hour this round and one of them (25.- g6??) was a big mistake. This brought his opponent Duijn into the shared lead, together with Strating (easy win over Kroeze) and Van der Weide (who won a hard fight with Rubingh). Van Blitterswijk defeated Borst in 20 moves and occupied the 4th place. Round 3 ------- The top boards all drew. Strating and Duijn agreed a draw after 11 moves when both players didn't like their own position. Van der Weide was worse/lost almost the whole game against Van Blitterswijk but managed to draw. Lemmers joined Van Blitterswijk on place 4 by beating Abbink. Reinderman lost another half point against Tondivar. Round 4 ------- Round 4 saw 2 leaders move away from the pack. Van der Weide defeated Duijn with the black pieces. He got stuck with a weak isolated pawn and decided to sacrifice it early in the game to complicate the game. Duijn made a mistake on move 26 where 26.g4 was needed. After 26.Rd5 f5 his rook got trapped on the fourth rank. Strating was outplayed by Van Blitterswijk who sacrificed a piece. The sacrifice was correct and white could have won with 21.Bxb6 Qxb6 22.Qh5. 21.Qe3 had a big hole (23.- Rb8) which brought Strating onto 3.5 points. Lemmers got crushed by Tondivar and Reinderman defeated Kroeze. (I miscalculated with 9.d4 and lost a pawn. Then I missed 15.- g4 and lost a piece. This brought my personal score against Dimitri to 0-7 and ended my chances for the championship.) Round 5 ------- The two leaders had to battle each other. Van der Weide used one of his famous d3-systems to achieve nothing from the opening. In the middlegame he slowly outplayed his opponent though, and the Q+N vs Q+B ending was an easy win for him. Thus he got a full point ahead of Strating and Reinderman, who had an easy win over Rubingh. In place 4 we find Wagenmakers, Duijn, Lemmers and Tondivar with 3 points. Lemmers won a pretty attacking game against Van Blitterswijk, whose attempt to complicate the game with 12.- Qxg2? backfired. Round 6 ------- Van der Weide didn't succeed in defending his first place against Reinderman. After a succesfull opening (despite the two free days Reinderman had to prepare) he decided to play for a win with 18.- h5 when he could have secured a little advantage with 18.- Bxg4 and 19.- Nce6. After 18.- h5? the h-pawn became weak and so did the position of the black king. Strating defeated Wagenmakers in a lucky manner and also got shared 1st again. Tondivar and Lemmers followed the leaders with wins over Borst and Duijn. Round 7 ------- Last round: Strating (4.5) - Reinderman (4.5) Van der Weide (4.5) - Tondivar (4) Lemmers (4) - Kroeze (3.5) The game on board 3 was finished very quickly: draw. Both players wanted to play for a win, but when Lemmers found a leak in his preperation 5 minutes before the game he decided to play a dull system. The game ended in a repetition of moves as white wanted his bishop on d3 instead of e2 and black didn't want that to happen. The games on board 1 and 2 were the last 2 of the tournament. Early in the middlegame it became clear that Reinderman and Van der Weide had the best chances. Van der Weide did indeed win, but Reinderman did not, making Karel van der Weide Dutch student champion 1995, exactly 30 years after his father won the title! Final standings: Pts. WP SB 1.
