In autumn of 1999, ChessTiger entered the ranking list of chess programs (SSDF) and immediately topped the list. Apart from ChessTiger 14.0, the CD also contains GambitTiger 2.0. GambitTiger is a particularly aggressive version of ChessTiger which mercilessly attacks the king. Thats why GambitTiger often chooses moves other programs would never play. Recently GambitTiger showed its claws in the Linares of chess programs" and came second behind DeepFritz. In contrast to their direct predecessors, ChessTiger 14.0 and GambitTiger also take advantage of the endgame databases (tablebases) and support multi-variation mode. FIDE master Martin Breutigam includes a small but swell database with 100 entries - 7 texts and 93 sample Another database includes 54 training questions enabling the user to test his freshly acquired knowledge. Furthermore, the CD features a big database of more than 4.000 games as a reference database plus a big tree of all games. Highly-regarded author Grandmaster Neil McDonald offers a comprehensive survey of the state of opening theory for both White and Black players, explaining the basic elements, strategies and tactics for both sides New In Chess Yearbook 58 New In Chess $22.50/£15 Opening preparation is not the first thing that comes to mind when the name of Brain Game World Champion Vladimir Kramnik is brought up. However, with the right ingredients in hand he is more than capable of producing some spicy opening dishes. Have a taste from Kramnik's Kitchen. CHEF DE CUISINE Thanks to Vladimir Kramnik an old line against the Gruenfeld Indian has come back into fashion. Offbeat Spanish Glenn Flear Everyman $21.95/£14.99 Deciding what to do against the Spanish (Ruy Lopez) is a perennial problem for those who play too passively and end up having to face what is known as the 'Spanish Torture'. In this book Grandmaster Glenn Flear studies a wide variety of ambitious and offbeat answers catering for many different playing styles. From the super-solid Berlin (as used so successfully by Vladimir Kramnik in his Brain Games World Championship victory against Garry Kasparov) to the uncompromising Schliemann, there is enough choice here for any prospective black player facing the Spanish For more information: go to

A busy week of news with confirmation of details about the Astana tournament that starts in a couple of weeks with Kasparov and Kramnik heading a very strong line-up. Other news includes Braingames announcing sponsorship of their computer match (although bad news for them perhaps with Kasparov making it clear that he is now out of contract with Braingames via an aside in one of Mig's columns on Kasparovchess.com). Many of the national team championships have been rapped up in the last few weeks and important fixtures have seen some highly rated players turn out.
Hope you enjoy this issue

Brain Games plc announced the signing of a million dollar contract on Tuesday 1 May 2001. The contract is with the state of Bahrain for a million dollar prize fund plus a further million dollars in back-up for the Man v Machine Challenge to be held in October. The main Bahrain figure involved is His Excellency Yousuf Shirawi, former Bahrain chess champion and member of the Bahrain government. The contract was signed for Brain Games Network by CEO David Massey. Grandmaster Ray Keene will be appointed Match Director while Enrique Irazoqui and Eric Schiller be the arbiters.
The match will be between Vladimir Kramnik and DEEP FRITZ. Deep Fritz beat Deep Junior after drawing their 24 game match 12-12 by winning two extra playoff games. DEEP JUNIOR started with a 5-0 lead The final critical moment came in game 22. With three games remaining Fritz needed two wins and a draw to force a play-off. Having no 'knowledge' of the match situation, Fritz made the terrible blunder of offering a draw. However Junior, also lacking a wider perspective, turned this offer down and went on to lose the game. The match has been a controversial one with the conditions being turned down by another invited program called Shredder and criticism over which programs were invited.
Braingames explain their reasoning. "We made a simple decision. We wanted programs which could play on multi-processor platforms as they are obviously stronger candidates for the Kramnik match. There are really only three candidates: Fritz, Junior and Shredder. We made great efforts to persuade Shredder to play but they declined." They added that they unfortunately didn't have time for a tournament with 10 programs which would have taken too long to run. One of the main complainants was the company REBEL. Their TIGER program is a single processor prgram yet still finished second in the Cadaques event run by Prof. Irazoqui earlier in the year. They actually have a multi-processor version called DEEP TIGER but that wasn't announced until after the invitations were made.

The Indefatigable chess organiser Hans-Walter Schmitt has moved his Chess Classic from Frankfurt to Mainz. "Mainz has the only city mayor in Germany who will give his unconditional support to chess." said Schmitt who will try and follow up his achievement of bringing the top 10 players under one roof with a new spectacular.
There is a new sponsor too, Schmitt has left his job with Siemens-Nixdorf and with it has gone the sponsorship of Fujitsu Siemens. He now has the support of Mayor Beutel of Mainz who is a former player for the Bundesliga 3rd league chess club SV Mombach. Mayor Beutel was one of only five players to draw against Garry Kasparov in a simul during last year's event.
The new sponsor is Landesbank Rheinland-Pfalz who are providing 500,000 German Marks for the new event. This is down from the 850,000DM given at the heights of the previous sponsorship.
Hans-Walter Schmitt is always looking for a new angle. The reduced funds have meant that a repeat of last year's top ten is impossible but instead there is a new start in Mainz with a battle of the world champions.
The format is slightly different too. Last year the time limit was 25 minutes per game, but this time Kramnik insisted on 10 extra seconds for each move. This will be a repeat of the final of the 1998 Chess Classic where Anand beat Kramnik 4:3 after extra games.
Mainz is also the headquarters of ZDF, the second of Germany's two national TV channels. "First contacts have been established with ZDF and with Südwestrundfunk (regional broadcasting channel in the other consortium). said Hans-Walter.
The CCM programme will also include other highlights between 23 June and 1 July. An eight game rapid chess match of Fischer Random Chess between Michael Adams (England) and Peter Leko (Hungary) will be another first. The event will be supplemented by a match of man versus machine. Chessbase will take on Adams and Leko.
There is also an opportunity to play Anand or Kramnik in a simul via an Internet auction at http://www.chesstigers.de. 20 boards from each of the 40 board simuls against Anand (Saturday, 23 June, 6.30 P.M.) and Kramnik (following day, 6.30 P.M.) are available to the highest bidder. The minimum bid is 100 German Marks. There will also be the Chess Classic Mainz and the eleven round Ordix Open (23 and 24 June) when a top-class field competes for prize money amounting to 45,000 German Marks.

The 2nd European open women's Championship was held from April 21st (round 1 April 22nd) - May 5th 2001 in the Marriott Hotel, Warsaw, Poland.
The event was a Swiss system - 11 rounds (one free day on April 28, tie-breaks on May 4). The new time control is being used, 40 moves in 75 minutes followed by all moves in 15 minutes with each player receiving an extra 30 seconds thinking time prior to the move. The final positions were established by a knockout tournament at the end. Almira Skripchenko-Lautier won the event after tie-breaks.
