In autumn of 1999, ChessTiger entered the ranking list of chess programs (SSDF) and immediately topped the list. Apart from ChessTiger 14.0, the CD also contains GambitTiger 2.0. GambitTiger is a particularly aggressive version of ChessTiger which mercilessly attacks the king. Thats why GambitTiger often chooses moves other programs would never play. Recently GambitTiger showed its claws in the Linares of chess programs" and came second behind DeepFritz. In contrast to their direct predecessors, ChessTiger 14.0 and GambitTiger also take advantage of the endgame databases (tablebases) and support multi-variation mode. Korchnoi was 70 on March 23rd and as part of the celebration of his 70th year there was a highly interesting two day event in Switzerland. Kramnik beat Kasparov in the final in an event which saw Boris Spassky remind us (as he occasionally does) that he was also a great player by uncorking a great win against Svidler. Korchnoi wasn't at his best this weekend but he is still a formidable player as his recent drawn match against Ponomariov proved. Elsewhere Sarah Hurst has a possible sighting of a man famous for a game he lost the best part of 35 years ago, Myagmarsuren. It makes me all nostalgic for real Interzonals and Candidates tournaments where it was actually important to do well. Just now it seems there are hardly any make or break events, its more like "I lost, so what? there will be another World championship along in a minute." We are not short of good chess events, but we are very short of important ones, the kind that made Korchnoi and Spassky's reputations under the highest pressure.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The Viktor Korchnoi 70th Birthday Tournament took place in the Hotel Savoy in Zürich, Switzerland (Main Sponsor: Bank Hofmann, Zürich). After a brave sacrifice in Kasparov's time trouble 24.Ba6 although 24.Nc4 would probably have won more easily Kramnik emerged the winner in the second game of the final (the first was drawn).

The Brain Games Network Computer World Qualifier match to determine the challenger to Vladimir Kramnik starts on Tuesday 24 April in the Spanish town of Cadaques. The competing software packages will be Deep Fritz, a program developed in Germany and Deep Junior, whose programmers are from Israel. The match will take place over 24 games and is expected to last approximately one week. The organiser and arbiter for the match is the respected chess computer expert Enrique Irazoqui, who has organised frequent chess computer battles. Brain Games will be carrying a daily update on the match. After 16 games Deep Junior leads 9.5-6.5 (it won the first 5 games before two draws and finally a win for Fritz). Game 4 was funny, Deep Junior spent several moves trying to get rid of an extra rook in order to enter its table base of ending positions which it can play perfectly.

The organisation of the match seems to have left much to be desired in terms of invitees. The computer world is fractious at the best of times but the conditions and invitees have caused real controversy. I reported comments by Shredder's programmer last week, there were further comments from REBEL too. http://www.rebel.nl/kramnik.htm. Whilst Braingames can of course invite who they want as a best of man vs. best of machine the whole thing has been hopelessly botched.
As reported last week an open letter signed by Kasparov, Karpov and Kramnik (see TWIC 337) was replied to on behalf of the WPC composed mainly by Shirov, Khalifman, Akopian and Salov. I now have a better translation of the letter. In addition the letter has now been signed by Viswanathan Anand.
After having read the letter of the 3 Ks, we would like to accept the kind invitation of the authors and participate in the discussion regarding burning problems of modern chess. However, unfortunately, some passages from the letter force us to initially comment on the letter itself. We have been used to the fact that V. Kramnik calls himself the 14th World Champion, but it was the 12th World Champion who really surprised us. In early 1998, having won over V. Anand in Lausanne, Karpov declared himself World Champion and Mr. Kasparov - Impostor. On 10 January 2001, at the same venue, Lausanne, Mr. Karpov (in front of the Commission for Sports Arbitrage of IOC, for a reward of USD 50, 000) admitted the legitimacy of the titles of the 14th and 15th World Champions, A. Khalifman and V. Anand respectively. And now We, 12th, 13th and 14th World Champions, are writing this joint letter!
Chess is not the only sport where the official International Federation has rights to organise the official World Championship. It is obvious that FIDE clearly has more rights than, for example, BGN (Brain Games Network), which had invited the participant who lost the qualification tournament (Mr. Kramnik) for the match, the source of the financing of which is now being investigated by the British police. It is not the first time one has to be reminded that ALL top active chess players have participated in the last official World Championship in New Delhi-Tehran, except the representatives of the arcane top level guild, i.e. authors of the KKK open letter.
We are ready to participate in the search for the ways to modify the World Championship cycle. But to turn the Championship into the selection process to play against Mr. Kasparov, which will in its turn, be the qualification to the match with Mr. Kramnik (or vice versa) we think unacceptable. The World Championship should become an honest sports competition of all the strongest chess players without any privileges for anyone whosoever.
We agree that FIDE Commerce (not FIDE) has come forward with a very shallow play of Grand Prix 2002 - both from the point of view of financial conditions and the Calendar. But if the project is going to be finalised, then Grand Prix tournaments might become a valuable innovation. Here we mean the tournaments for 32 players and not for 6, as in Linares and Dortmund. Of course, besides Linares and Dortmund there are (at least in the 2001 Calendar), Wijk aan Zee, Cannes, Monaco, Astana, Merida, Leon and many other important tournaments. And this is why, were the Grand Prix tournaments introduced, it would not be possible to avoid some dates clashes. And the millions of fans might on some occasion wish the top players play and not leave for the trainers teams of the super stars.
A few words on the time control. Every Organiser should have a chance to choose it for his own tournament. For instance, if the tournament in honour of the unfading chess classic of the 20th century V. Korchnoi, where, by the way, two from the undersigned will participate, is a rapid chess tournament, this only shows that there is an objective trend to accelerate the tempo of the game. And nobody is going to forbid the classic time control, though the quality of the game with such time control is likely to be a little inferior to the "advanced chess" game.
In conclusion one more quotation from the letter of 3K: The game of chess belongs to the world chess community. This looks like a fresh idea: nobody has ever thought that chess can belong to anyone. But the interests of professional chess players are still there. And they should be subject neither to FIDE, nor the Messrs. Authors of the open letter.

The final two rounds of the Bundesliga were played over the weekend of April 28th-29th 2001. Lübeck confirmed themselves as the new champions although they had a bit of a rocky ride with a 4.5-3.5 win against Magdeberg (Rogozenko beat Shirov on top board) and a 4-4 draw against Werder Bremen to drop their first match points of the championships. Second were SG Koeln Porz and third Solinger SG. Relegated were: Baiertal Schatt, Schott Mainz, König Tegel and Gelsenkirchen

Jussi Tella writes that the Finnish Team League ended with a double-round weekend 10th-11th March 2001. Going into the last two rounds there were many teams who had a chance for the title and they met each other. In Finland all the matches of the last two rounds are played in Helsinki, which makes the final weekend a special chess event.
In the 8th round JoeSK beat the leading team Taraus 3-1, and this gave the opportunity for Garde to take the lead by beating HSK 2-1. In the 9th round Garde secured the title with a 3-1 win over Taraus before JoeSK and HSK who won their 9th round matches and finished in front of JyS and the unfortunate Taraus, who ended up only 5th. Henri Koskinen now sends the games.

The Gausdal Classics had one GM-group and two IM-groups each with 10 players. A 7 hour playing session was used. The venue was the Gausdal Høifjellshotel. In the B tournament FM Erik Hedman made an IM-norm. The main moment of controversy was the game Elsness-Trygstad (5) when the game was declared drawn by the arbiter after Trygstad's flag fell. Elsness withdrew from the event for the last three rounds after this dispute. Games from the final rounds are now available. My thanks to Eirik Gullaksen.

No diplomatic niceties as Mongol horde ravages Beijing
A team from Mongolia emerged the victors in a hard-fought weekend tournament organized by the Slovak Embassy in Beijing. Col. Dusan Zoller, the Slovak defence attache, and Rastislav Sulla, head of the embassys Economic & Commercial Department, ran the unusual event and were runners-up to Mongolia after a five-game blitz play-off. In the other games players had 60 minutes each for all of their moves. This was the first tournament of its kind and it was held in a friendly and light-hearted spirit, with players communicating in English, Russian and Chinese, amongst other languages.
The original concept was to invite representatives of embassies only, but a few ringers got in: the second player on the Romanian team was a Tajik, and the Democratic Republic of Congo team consisted of Telly Kongolo, a sculptor, and Sarah Hurst, an itinerant journalist. Chess sets and DGTs were kindly loaned by Beijing Chess Club, members of which attended the prize-giving ceremony. The Chinese trainer was quite impressed by the standard of the foreigners play and a journalist from a Chinese sports magazine interviewed the participants. The Slovak ambassador presented the prizes, which included chess sets, clocks and souvenirs of the picturesque Central European country. By the end of the tournament everyone wanted to visit it, with the possible exception of the Czechs, who were comprehensively demolished by their neighbours. The Czechs redeemed themselves in the last round, salvaging their honour and half a point against Romania. In an endgame with three pawns against two, the Czech player was unfortunate not to make it a win. Congos participation came about in an interesting way. Sarah Hurst runs the Lost Pawns Chess Club in Beijing (based throughout the winter at the John Bull Pub, but soon to move to the outdoor terrace at the Elephant Russian Restaurant), and one of its members works at the French Embassy. The French player suggested forming a team, but her boss wouldnt allow the embassys good name to be besmirched by outsiders. Perhaps a wise decision, as the teams result was rather ignominious. Fortunately Telly Kongolos embassy proved more accommodating. Final results,

Rupert Jones reports: The IBM Botswana national Championships for 2001 has seen a return from the wilderness by John Hutcheson who won the 10 player all play all with the tremendous score of 8/9 which is a harking back to the late 1980's when John used to win the Championship very comfortably on a regular basis and then in the early 1990's it dried up as the competiton provided a better challenge. The Ladies title was won by surprise package Keitumetse Mokgacha on tie break from Betty Phutego after both had scored 6/9. The event is a tribute to the game in the country as over 400 players set off in the qualifying rounds for the final 20 places.
The event is sponsored to the tune of £2,500 by IBM who are in their third year of support.

Alasdair MacLeod, Secretary, London Deaf Chess Club reports: London Deaf Chess Club, representing England, came 2nd in the Europa Cup for Deaf Chess Clubs held in Lisbon, Portugal over Easter winning the silver medals and a large trophy. The team consisted of Phillip Gardner, Ilan Dwek, Simon Andersson, Richard Dunn and Barry David (captain). This fantastic result marks the first time in over 20 years' participation in European and World team championships that an English deaf chess team has come in the top 3. Twelve teams entered the tournament and was won by Hamburg (Germany) - who fielded 2 Russians including two times World Deaf Chess Champion, International Master Sergei Salov. Third place went to the defending champions Budapest (Hungary). The team was financially supported by, amongst others, the "Friends of Chess".

He is now involved in two new websites. http://www.gmsquare.com The idea is to provide a place on the Web to those GMs who would like to have some presence on the Internet and currently there are sites of three GMs there - Alexander Baburin himself, Alexander Morozevich and Lev Psakhis. Secondly at: http://www.chesstoday.net there will be a commercial chess service, providing daily news, interviews and instruction to a wide range of players. Each issue will feature one annotated game and news from around the world, while weekend issues will have some instructional materials, particularly useful for club players. Chess Today costs about $15 for 4 months.
