I can't remember a week like this for many years. Almost all the top players competing in two events held at the same time. Could this become the norm? There is certainly room for more tournaments in the sense that there are class players who don't get many invitations. FIDE Commerce released an interview with Aiden Day and Artiom Tarasov in which they promise a major event every month as part of their Grand Prix that starts next month. However Tarasov also stated that they may look to schedule across major events that don't participate in the Grand Prix.
This week might go some way to proving this to be a slightly futile gesture as the World Cup of Rapid Chess and the Amber tournament both managed interesting fields simultaneously. It is however a pretty blunt way to go about business to say the least. Especially as these major tournaments have been responsible for keeping top chess going for the best part of a decade at least.
There are many different groups interested in these developments, the Federations from which FIDE derive their authority to administer chess. Already it seems the Federations are trying to get back some of the power they may (this has to be established) have ceded to FIDE Commerce over time rates. That will be a very interesting debate at the next congress. It remains to be seen what impact the reality of a non-accountable commercial organisation such as FIDE Commerce will have, we've already seen one in action too, the PCA. The players who are divided into the leading players (top ten to twenty) who will be in great demand, the top 100 who might see some improvement in the number of invitations they get and the rest, well, what of them? Also there are the people who follow chess. Do we want more chess? or better higher quality events? Do we want to see the stars out all the time such as in tennis and golf where it is practically compulsory to play all the time whether you feel like it or not, especially if you're a top star. Oh and one way or another the chess fan is surely in the business plan of FIDE Commerce, perhaps we could mention we like matches, strong all-play-alls and long time rates, do you think they might listen? That is getting ahead of ourselves a little, shortly FIDE Commerce say they will announce the six events they've signed up for the Grand Prix next year. We'll take it from there.
Hope you enjoy this issue

Garry Kasparov convinvingly won the Second World Cup of Rapid Chess in Cannes, France 21st-25th March 2001. The event was organised by the French Chess Federation in conjunction with FIDE (the FIDE Presidential Board will be present during the event). Kasparov won the event when he beat Evgeny Bareev in the final 1.5-0.5. Bareev resigned game two with only a few seconds left (as few as two) in what was a drawn position. However with a time rate of 50 moves in 25 minutes followed by 10 seconds a move after that, Bareev had little chance of making the time control. The event had a group stage which produced eight players. The event then became a knockout.
Playoffs consisted of 2 blitz games of 5 minutes/player with alternating colours. In case of a tie: 2 blitz games of 5 minutes/player with alternating colours. In case of a tie: sudden death 1 blitz, 6 minutes white/5 minutes black. Black qualifies if the game is drawn. Prior to the game there a draw decided which colour they took.

There is an interview with Artiom Tarasov, President FIDE Commerce International Ltd and Aidan Day, Senior Vice-President Octagon Marketing Ltd. As predicted on these pages FIDE seem prepared to destroy established major tournaments rather than allow them operate outside the new Grand Prix. Artiom Tarasov says "In certain cases, for the progressive good of chess, we will organise new tournaments in the capital cities of some of these countries. This would be a slightly unfortunate situation for some events as the new Grand Prix events will be likely to take place at the same time as those events rejecting our proposal."

A transcript of Khalifman's ICC question and answer session is available. He talks at length on how he believes the FIDE Championships are the only one but isn't a craven FIDE loyalist. For instance he is not a supporter of the new FIDE time rate. He talks of the current big three (Kasparov, Kramnik and Anand) and how he feels he probably belongs in the next grouping of around 10 players (I agree). His objection to FIDE ratings. Why he isn't disappointed at being ignored by Corus (Why doesn't Khalifman get more invites? It puzzles me even in broken English he's a better ambassador for the game than many and he's playing well.) and how he believes Anand will not have sufficient recovery time to put in his best performance in Wijk aan Zee.
