My thanks to David Avron, John Henderson, Jon Speelman, Dima Tyomkin, Radu Chirila, John Donaldson, Luis Rodi, Theodoros Tsorbatzoglou, Dennis Monokroussos, Bill Townsend, Evgeniy Solozhenkin, Laszlo Nagy, Sinisa Joksic, Alexander Boldt, Axel Fritz, Anthony Corrales, Notzai, Jussi Tella and all those who helped with this issue.
The Linares tournament concluded with a crushing win for Kasparov who didn't even seem to be at full throttle in achieving this result. Next week sees the start of the Amber tournament and the USA China Match so the good chess continues. The agreement between the organisers of Wijk aan Zee, Linares and Dortmund to co-operate and to run their events as they see fit will hopefully guarantee top class classical chess for a few years to come.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The Linares 2001 tournament took place 22nd February until March 7th 2001. The event was a double round robin. There was full daily coverage of the event on TWIC's pages. Kasparov won the event as expected. His five wins and five draws left him a full three points ahead of the rest of the field. He missed a couple of opportunities to win by an even greater margin. The event was significant with the participation of Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov in the same tournament under standard conditions for the first time since Las Palmas 1996 (they did play in the Frankfurt Rapidplay in 1998). Karpov is not the force he once was, he is very reliant on openings he first prepared the best part of a decade ago and he also gets into major time trouble, which seems to be more due to lack of confidence than anything else (he's still a formidable rapid player). Polgar looked as if she might secure second place all to herself but losses to Karpov and Shirov in the final three rounds brought her back to the field. Alexander Grischuk's debute was satisfactory enough but he didn't look the force he was during the FIDE Championships. Peter Leko was the only player not to win a game, he does need to find a way to generate some more results if he wishes to progress. Finally Shirov managed to get on terms with his final round win against Polgar. Shirov obviously likes to play a lot but a near continuous diet of chess for around a year seems to have caught up with him. He probably needs a break (not that he is going to get one with the Amber tournament starting this week).
Kasparov has indicated he will probably play in a tournament in Kazakhstan in late May and early June. The six player event may have Kasparov, Kramnik, Anand and Shirov playing but until an announcement is made we can't know for sure.

Press Release
The representatives of the organizational committee from the three great chess tournaments: Corus, Wijk aan Zee (Netherlands), Dortmund (Germany) and "Ciudad de Linares" (Spain) have decided in their meeting during the XVIII edition of the "Ciudad de Linares" International Chess Tournament to issue the statement in a connection with the proposal from FIDE COMMERCE LIMITED concerning to constitute the Foundation of the WORLD CHESS GRAND PRIX.
1. The FIDE COMMERCE proposal was thoroughly considered by the three Organizers as not totally in accordance with their main objectives to maintain the level of indepedence of their respective events.
2. We would like to stress our common wish to preserve the actual character of each one of the tournament, according to our traditions and individual criteria.
3. However we are ready to study all possible future proposals by FIDE when aimed to promote traditional chess tournaments and Chess in general. We decided to take a firm committment with each one of us, who are signing this document, to continue working together in finding the most adequate solutions for a prosperity of the Chess Game.
4. The above mentioned organizers will keep grofounding in their efforts to establish even better cooperation among their cities in order to create a stronger link with the Top World Chess.

The 10th and 11th rounds of the Bundesliga were played over the weekend of March 10th-11th 2001. Luebeck managed a narrow victory against closest rivals Porz and now seem certain to take the title having expanded their lead to three points. The match was very tense in spite of early victories for Jon Speelman and Julian Hodgson. Shirov found himself in a very tense struggle against Christopher Lutz (who had a very attractive finish against Ftacnik on Saturday) which finally ended in a draw and Agdestein who followed a tragi-comic win on Saturday against Seger (who was winning but completely mishandled the King and Pawn ending) with a loss against Bacrot. Also John Nunn had to struggle hard against Alexander Nenashev (who has now got German Nationality thanks to the fact his Grandfather was German and has now changed to his surname, Graf, I will use Nenashev until the change works its way into the FIDE rating list however) for a draw.
The games from Mainz from rounds 8 and 9 are now available as well as the games from Hamburg and Neukoelln from rounds 10-11.

Bill Townsend reports: The 2001 U.S. Amateur Team East was played over a three day weekend from Feb. 17 to 19. 215 teams consisting of nearly 900 players converged on Parsippany, New Jersey from as far away as Texas and Massachusetts.
Usually a tiebreak system is used to determine first place, but this year that wasn't necessary because "Zen and the Art of Bisguier" had the only 6-0 score of the event. The team members: IM Ron Burnett, GM Arthur Bisguier, Sergio Almeida and Noah Belcher.
Second with 5 1/2 - 1/2 was "S.L.A.M." which consisted of Steve Stoyko, John McCarthy, Ed Allen and Peter LaRocco. Third on tiebreaks with the same team score was "Collins Kids Materas," made up of: Dmitry Schneider, Noah Siegal, and Lev Milman.
There are four U.S. Amateur team events held simultaneously in four parts of the United States, but the East is always the biggest and most prestigious, perhaps because that's where this event was first held in 1968.
In spite of the word "Amateur" in the event title, there were more than a few titled players in attendance. To qualify a team must have an average rating under 2,200 USCF, so within those guidelines almost anything goes. Therefore one team had two grandmasters (Yasser Seirawan and Roman Dzindzichashvili) while another featured the current U.S. Champion, Joel Benjamin.
In spite of the big names the accent was on fun at this event with prizes given for achievements like "Biggest Upset," "Best Chess Promotional Idea," and "Best Team Name." There were some fearsome chess puns in this last category, the winner being "Harry Patzer and the Poisoned Pawn." Another team name that TWIC readers might recognize was: "The Weak In Chess."
Jussi Tella writes that the Finnish Team League ended with a double-round weekend 10th-11th March 2001. Going into the last two rounds there were many teams who had a chance for the title and they met each other. In Finland all the matches of the last two rounds are played in Helsinki, which makes the final weekend a special chess event.
In the 8th round JoeSK beat the leading team Taraus 3-1, and this gave the opportunity for Garde to take the lead by beating HSK 2-1. In the 9th round Garde secured the title with a 3-1 win over Taraus before JoeSK and HSK who won their 9th round matches and finished in front of JyS and the unfortunate Taraus, who ended up only 5th.

TWIC always welcomes letters. No publication is guaranteed but the magazine can act as a forum for chess issues of the moment. The views expressed in these letters are those of the authors not of TWIC or Chess & Bridge Ltd.
The following is an open letter from GMs K.Aseev, S.Ionov, S.Ivanov, A.Khalifman, V.Loginov and E.Solozhenkin all players I very much respect. Probably the best thing to do to understand the background to it is to go to: http://w.p.c.tripod.com. Even after the letter I feel I have no dignified option left to me other than to cease direct communication with Salov as he simply uses them as ammunition on his own webpage. This doesn't preclude covering the activities of the WPC in TWIC. I certainly believe that players do need representation. Its unclear to me that the WPC does this representative job but it seems it does for some players at least. Whether the increasingly political nature of the postings on the WPC site makes it impossible for Salov to effectively represent a significant numbers of chess players I leave it to you to decide.
Dear Mark,
First of all allow us to express you our deep respect for that huge job which you perform. It would be nice if one day there will be no more players who did not thank you at least once for free downloading of games on Mondays. We once again express here our gratitude now with great pleasure.
The reason for our letter is your conflict with the President of World Players Council Grandmaster Valery Salov. From the recent stuff placed on the website of WPC (http://w.p.c.tripod.com) we have learned that you were going to stop all relations with WPC. We request you to listen to us, having abstracted from the person whose surname probably does not invoke the kindest feelings to you.
Today each serious analytics on practically any subject more or less applies to the problem of the globalization of our world, the increasing intercommunication of its internal processes. The world has already become multipolar for a long time, and from the yesterday's bipolarity nothing remained. If the victory of one of the sides in a bipolar world meant only the utter defeat of the second side, the opposition of two sides in multipolar coordinate system to some extent influences all sides involved in the process. The world of chess is a microworld and the same laws as in the big one are applied here. We expect the scepticism of primitive cynics: how the conflict between the leader of an independent chess organization and a leading journalist can influence that pole of our microworld which is consisted on grandmasters? You, Mark, better than many players understand that the Council led by the grandmaster with the reputation of a man of principles and honor should be necessary for chessplayers. So it is more painful to realise that your emotions in one moment have gained upper hand over your mind. This is the point, because not a different philosophy of views lies in the basis of your conflict with Salov but, practically speaking, one particular question. We unconditionally shall not become the arbiters in your dispute, we have another super task. By this letter we want to promote the renewal of your cooperation with WPC. If we succeed, it means that grandmasters can play a constructive role in the chess world. Believe us, Mark, men who know Salov from childhood and youth, that there is no need for Valery to degenerate to an « abusive campaign against someone ». The apparent sharpness of Salov is, actually, an original derivative of his literary talent, but it is not an argument based on which someone should break off a relationship. We can say more. We are almost sure that Salov has selected you, Mark, as an opponent among your colleagues, because he exclusively respects you personally. Otherwise Valery would not look for a chance to argue with you, as he is not looking, for example, for a possibility to dispute with Mr. Kasparov.
With best wishes,
GMs K.Aseev, S.Ionov, S.Ivanov, A.Khalifman, V.Loginov and E.Solozhenkin

A transcript of Khalifman's ICC question and answer session is available. He talks at length on how he believes the FIDE Championships are the only one but isn't a craven FIDE loyalist. For instance he is not a supporter of the new FIDE time rate. He talks of the current big three (Kasparov, Kramnik and Anand) and how he feels he probably belongs in the next grouping of around 10 players (I agree). His objection to FIDE ratings. Why he isn't disappointed at being ignored by Corus (Why doesn't Khalifman get more invites? It puzzles me even in broken English he's a better ambassador for the game than many and he's playing well.) and how he believes Anand will not have sufficient recovery time to put in his best performance in Wijk aan Zee.

GM Alexander Baburin has been a familiar presence on the internet with his Coffee Break magazine. He is now involved in two new websites. http://www.gmsquare.com The idea is to provide a place on the Web to those GMs who would like to have some presence on the Internet and currently there are sites of three GMs there - Alexander Baburin himself, Alexander Morozevich and Lev Psakhis. Secondly at: http://www.chesstoday.net there will be a commercial chess service, providing daily news, interviews and instruction to a wide range of players.
