1) Introduction

My thanks to Mart Tarmak, Pam Thomas, Carlo Mazzoni, Dima Tyomkin, Axel Fritz, Martin Pribyl, Paul Werner Wagner, Georg Kradolfer, Maarten van Gils, Argiris Kotsis, John Donaldson, Lazslo Nagy and all those who helped with this issue.

Vladimir Kramnik beat Peter Leko in a closely contested rapidplay match. Both players will pass on to Wijk aan Zee for what will almost certainly be the top event of the year. The appearance of Kramnik, Anand and Kasparov together should make this a very competitive and interesting event. TWIC will have special coverage of the event. We're now awaiting the new FIDE rating list for January which has been late in appearing. Please not that the ratings I use in TWIC are the July ratings. By the time it became widely known that the October list was to be used by FIDE for rating for the first time it was too late for me to update my database.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) Kramnik-Leko Match

The "RWE Gas Match" sponsored a match between Vladimir Kramnik and Peter Leko held from January 2nd to 8th 2001. There were 12 rapid games (two per day, rest day: January 5th) in the Hotel Kempinski in the city centre of Budapest (Hungary). Kramnik won the match 7-5.

Day 1 Vladimir Kramnik won the first game of the match on the white side of a Gruenfeld Defence. Game two was a Berlin Defence and was drawn after 71 moves Leko missed a win with 64.Rd2+ Ke6 65.Rd1 Rc2 66.c8Q+ according to Artur Yusupov. So far the match has followed Kramnik's preparation for his match against Kasparov.

Day 2 Interesting gambit play from Kramnik on the white side of a Queen's Indian was defused by accurate play from Peter Leko and a draw was agreed on move 28. Kramnik beat Leko on the black side of a sharp Berlin Defence after he got two bishops for rook and pawn.

Day 3 Leko struck back by winning with black in the first game of day 3. The game was a Main Line Hedgehog by transposition and after building up a threatening looking position (but it mostly looks this wayfor white in this opening) Kramnik was shown to have over-reached by Leko's counter attack which won the day. Game two of the day was a draw after Leko played a Vienna opening 1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3. g3.

Day 4 Another complex Queen's Indian saw most of the players time used by move 28. The game ended on move 120! in a draw around 5 minutes later. The second game of the day saw Leko break through and beat Kramnik's Berlin Defence to level the match.

Day 5 Kramnik retook the lead with a smooth win against Leko's Nimzo-Indian in the first game of the day. The second game saw Kramnik gain an edge from a Sicilian and then eventually win the enchange. He won on time in the end on move 133 in a Rook vs Bishop ending where Leko needed to reach move 145 without losing his bishop to draw.

Day 6 Leko played the Benoni against Kramnik in the penultimate game of the match. Kramnik played conservatively getting a small edge but the game simplfied to a draw after only 30 moves. The final game was drawn after 33 moves of a Sicilian.

3) Keres Memorial Rapid Tournament

Mart Tarmak reports: The 11th Paul Keres Memorial, rapid chess tournament, organized by sport society Kalev took place in Tallinn January 5th-7th 2001. The event marked the 85th anniversary of the birth of Paul Keres.

The clear winner of the final tournament with 8 participants was Dutch GM Jan Timman with 5,5 of 7, a full point ahead of GM Peter Svidler a member of the Russian Gold Medal winning team in the recent Istanbul Olympiad.

Timman who did not play in the Olympiad nor the FIDE World Championships played a very good tournament and it is one of the best rapid chess results of his long career. Timman last played in Tallinn 28 years ago when as a young IM he participated in the 1973 Tallinn international tournament (1st Tal 12/15 2nd Polugaievsky 10.5, 3rd-6th Keres, Spassky, Bronstein, Balashov 9. His 50% score was a good result in such a strong company.

Besides playing chess Jan Timman participated in the international symposium "Paul Keres - The Sportsman of the Century" giving the paper "Runner-up forever. The influence of Paul Keres on International Chess". Paul Keres was voted Sportsman of the Century in Estonia in front of for example the double Gold Medal winner from the 1936 Berlin Olympic games, wrestler Kristjan Palusalu. Other talks included one from master and Keres' biographer Valter Heuer ("Our Keres. Paul Keres as the Carrier of the Estonian National Spirit"), writer Ülo Tuulik ("Paul Keres and Culture. The Role of Paul Keres in the Estonian Cultural History") etc.

Final standings: 1. GM Jan Timman NED 5,5, 2. GM Peter Svidler RUS 4,5, 3. GM Alexander Rustemov RUS 3,5, 4. GM Viktor Gavrikov LTU 3,5, 5. GM Judit Polgar HUN 3,5, 6. GM Jaan Ehlvest EST 3, 7. IM OLav Sepp EST 2,5, 8. GM Normunds Miezis LAT 2.

At the same time there was also played a women's tournament: 1. WGM Viktorija Cmilyte LTU 5,5, 2. WIM Dana Reizniece LAT 5, 3. WIM Tatjana Voronova LAT 4,5, 4. WIM Leili Pärnpuu EST 3,5, 5. Sofia Budõlina EST 3, 6. WIM Tatjana Fomina EST 3, 7. WIM Monika Tsoganova EST 2,5, 8. Viktoria Baskite EST 1.

After the good result in the Istanbul Olympiad and Jaan Ehlvest's success in the New Delhi WC, public interest in chess is on the rise in Estonia again. The tournament hall was full of spectators and the event got a broad coverage in the Estonian media including TV. Next week there is another interesting chess event. On January 14th there will be a match over 100 boards between Estonia and Finland. And it will be played not in Estonia nor in Finland but on the Baltic Sea - on board the ferry boat between Tallinn and Helsinki.

There was a 7 round qualification Swiss which provided four players to join the four invited players. Results: 1st-3rd GMs Rustemov (Russia), Miezis (Latvia), Gavrikov (Lithuania) 5,5. 4th-6th IM Sepp (Estonia), GM Lugovoi (Russia), IM Külaots (Estonia) 5, etc. The fourth qualifier was 6 time Estonian Champion Olav Sepp.

Games provided by Ülar Lauk.

9) Wilhelm Steinitz Memorial

Prague - Wilhelm Steinitz Memorial & Karel Prucha Memorial 2000-1

Martin Pribyl reports: One of the leading chess clubs in the Czech Republic Holdia DP Prague organized at the end of the 20th century three tournaments in Prague. Two of them were played in Memory of the First World Chess Champion Wilhelm Steinitz, who was born in Prague in 1836 and died in 1900 in the USA. Steinitz lived in Prague for his first 22 years and due to the fact that in the 19th century Prague was a part of Austria he is supposed to be an Austrian. This fact is not so correct in today's geographical situation, Prague was for thousand of years the capital of the Bohemian kingdom, later since 1918 the capital of Czechoslovakia and nowadays the capital of the Czech Republic since 1993. So this is why the Wilhelm Steinitz Memorial was organized in Prague.

There were two tournaments a grandmaster round robin, category 8 and master round robin with the category 1. Czech international master Michal Konopka chased a GM norm until the end. In the last round he had to beat the French champion Marc Santo Roman with black pieces but the game ended in a draw.

The second tournament won clearly young FIDE master Petr Jirovsky. With 7 points out of 9 games he reached his final IM norm.

The third tournament organized in Prague at the end of December 2000 was the Karel Prucha Memorial. Karel Prucha was born in 1901, in 1923 he gained the title of Czechoslovakian chess master, he played 3 times in the closed Czechoslovakian championships (1952-1960). In the periode of 1945 - 1953 he worked as the captain of the Czechoslovakian olympiad team.

The open tournament in Memoriam of Karel Prucha won the young Czech master Pavel Cech. Karel Prucha's wife and the women Czechoslovak champion in 1957 Dana Prasilova scored 4 points of 7 and finished in the 18th place.

The tournaments were sponsored by the companies Holdia, Abner and Monada.

19) Review of the Year

Ever since the start of TWIC I've had a review of the year covering the major results of the previous year. For some reason I didn't get round to this last year so below is a double review for 1999 and 2000.

1999

January

The FIDE rating list at the start of the year saw Kasparov clear first ahead of Anand and Kramnik. Alexander Morozevich appeared in the top 10 for the first time after gaining 98 rating points. There were many errors in the list and at least three versions were released.

February

It became clear that it was unlikely that a Shirov vs. Kasparov WCC match was going to take place. A war of words between Kasparov and Shirov ensued. Michael Adams and Yasser Seirawan drew a match in Bermuda 21st January to 1st February. Las Vegas was back on as a venue for the FIDE Championships, Caesar's Palace hotel is given as the likely venue. Results from a Scheveningen tournament in Yangon Myanmar started a series of investigations into the growth of Myanmar player's ratings.

Karpov drew all eight games in a match with Piket. In game seven Karpov didn't have time to take a rook that was en prise.

Kasparov continued the brutal confirmation of his status as World number 1. He took first place at the Linares tournament February 21-March 10th by 2.5 points. Kramnik and Anand shared 2nd place.

The FIDE Championships in Las Vegas dominated events. The first big match was between Gata Kamsky and Alexander Khalifman. Kamsky returning to chess after a long absense beat Khalifman in the first game of their match, the second game was won by Khalifman and saw a protest by Kamsky complaining of players following their game making gestures and pulling faces. Kamsky went on to lose the playoff. The third round saw Asrian, Shipov, Krasenkow, Magem, Svidler, Timman, Rublevsky, Almasi, Psakhis, Beliavsky and Korchnoi go out. Leko, Bareev, Milos and Lautier followed in the playoffs. The fourth round saw Short and Georgiev go out. Topalov, Dreev, Federov, Zvjaginsev Gelfand and Ivanchuk follow after playoffs. Through went Akopian and Shirov and after playoffs Movsesian, Adams, Kramnik, Polgar, Khalifman and Nisipeanu also. In the fifth round Nisipeanu beat Shirov and Khalifman beat Polgar over two games. The favourite for the championships Vladimir Kramnik was eliminated after a playoff by Michael Adams. Vladimir Akopian beat Sergei Movsesian also. In the semi-finals Alexander Khalifman eventually saw off Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu after a playoff. Michael Adams seemed very tired after his match against Kramnik and went down 2.5-0.5 against Vladimir Akopian. Alexander Khalifman won the FIDE World Chess Championships after a 3.5-2.5 victory in the final. Kasparov makes an infamous chess tourist set of comments about some of the players in the later stages of the championships.

Vladimir Kramnik ended Garry Kasparov's reign as World Chess Champion. He beat Kasparov 8.5-6.5. Kasparov didn't win a single game and seemed very out of sorts, unable to respond to Kramnik's well thought out match strategy. Whether Kramnik can establish himself as the recognised World Chess Champion however is a matter of time as even as he won the match the opinion of his collegues was split. What is certain is that it brought to an end any claims Kasparov had for the title.

Viswanathan won the FIDE World Chess Championships which took place in New Delhi, India and Tehran, Iran, 25 November - 27 December 2000. Anand won through the event with very little trouble with the exception of his match against Alexander Khalifman and emerged undefeated. The battle for recognition as World Champion between Anand and Kramnik over the next year should be very interesting.

FIDE in the wake of the victory of Anand in their World Championships decided to leave the basic format virtually unchanged except that all players will start in the first round. They did decide to hold the final three weeks after the semi-final and hold it over 8 games. Their major announcement was a move to a four hour session for all their events. This shocking announcement seems to be on a whim from the Presidential council and shows their complete control over FIDE. The next couple of years will be key for their vision, they will be completely responsible for successes and failures.

Khalifman Transcript

A transcript of Khalifman's ICC question and answer session is available. He talks at length on how he believes the FIDE Championships are the only one but isn't a craven FIDE loyalist. For instance he is not a supporter of the new FIDE time rate. He talks of the current big three (Kasparov, Kramnik and Anand) and how he feels he probably belongs in the next grouping of around 10 players (I agree). His objection to FIDE ratings. Why he isn't disappointed at being ignored by Corus (Why doesn't Khalifman get more invites? It puzzles me even in broken English he's a better ambassador for the game than many and he's playing well.) and how he believes Anand will not have sufficient recovery time to put in his best performance in Wijk aan Zee.
