1) Introduction

My thanks to Anthony Fox, Alan Laverty, John Saunders, Ruslan Ponomariov and Mikhail Golubev, Søren Søgaard, Laszlo Nagy, Emil Pessi, Arthur Brameld, Gyorkos Lajos, Axel Fritz and Juergen Daniel, Alejandro Martinez Gonzalez, Pia Cramling, Lost Boys, Boris Schipkov, Helena Wallström, Lanfranco Bombelli and Sujatha Srinivasan, and all those who helped with this issue.

The FIDE Chess Championships have reached their semi-final stages. Viswanathan Anand will take on Michael Adams and this should be a very tight match with Anand being slight favourite. However if Adams can cope with Anand's powerful play with white the match then he has good chances himself. The fact that Adams had a rest day whereas Anand had a tough playoff to contend with is definitely advantage to him. Alexei Shirov is strong favourite over 17 year old Alexander Grischuk but he will have to be careful. Grischuk is a fast improving player who hasn't lost a game in these championships. Shirov is going to have to be careful he doesn't play a careless game as he might struggle to win back. Its going to be fascinating.

Hope you enjoy this issue

2) FIDE World Chess Championships

The FIDE World Chess Championships take place in New Delhi, India and Tehran, Iran, 25 November - 27 December 2000. The FIDE Championships first round got underway on time.

The week started with the pairing of round three where Peter Leko faced defending champion Alexander Khalifman. After the two drawn games at standard time-rates and four games at rapid time-rates the match went into a sudden death playoff. After one further draw Khalifman remained in the event by winning the second sudden death game.

Round four saw two major mini-matches. Alexei Shirov managed to beat Boris Gelfand in what should have been the heavyweight clash of the round. In the end it didn't really catch fire, two draws was followed by a poor first rapidgame by Gelfand and another draw which saw Shirov through. Michael Adams took his match against Svidler to rapid playoffs but took advantage of white to go through undefeated. The big surprise was Tkachiev's elimination of Morozevich. Tkachiev and Morozevich travelled to a few tournaments together at the start of their careers around 6 years ago and this seemed to help the under-dog in the match. A wild first game will quite a few missed opportunities for Morozevich ended in a draw. The second game saw Tkachiev win a pawn and then capitolised on it to win the match. Topalov and Dreev played a brutal match of two standard games and four rapidplay all of which were decisive. Dreev panicked with a few seconds left on his clock in the fifth playoff game, he had the advantage but dropped his entire position with a terrible blunder and was understandably not in much condition to get back after that.

The quarter finals that concluded today saw the elimination of the defending champion Alexander Khalifman. His opponent was Viswanathan Anand the top seed for the event and I believe that Khalifman should have been seeded higher he was unlucky to meet him at this stage. Not that Khalifman struggled in the match. He introduced a fine piece of opening preparation with black in game one in the Marshall Gambit of the Ruy Lopez and drew easily, he didn't put much pressure on in the second standard game. Although he also didn't get anything with the white pieces in the first playoff game he had much the better of the draw in the second game. Then he made a fatal mistake. Anand opened with 1.Nf3 and this seemed to throw him he played a gambit in the slav giving up a piece for pawns, even before he had left theory I thought this a mistake and this proved to be the case, this kind of position is much harder to play for black and you don't want this in a speed game he lost in 41 moves. He tried pretty hard in the final game but it ended in a draw.

Anand's opponent will be Michael Adams who has quietly made progress throughout the championships. Adams won a long grind against Veselin Topalov in the semi-final game one and had absolutely no trouble in drawing the second to go through.

17 year old Alexander Grischuk has shown great maturity in qualifying for the semi-finals. Although he hasn't had a high profile thus far he also hasn't lost a game. He beat Vladislav Tkachiev in the quarter-finals by winning the second playoff game. He's definitely a star in the making but whether he's the finished product will surely be tested by his next round opponent, Alexei Shirov.

Alexei Shirov almost didn't make it to the semi-finals. He lost with black against Evgeny Bareev and faced a must win with white. Shirov however is a class player and he won very easily against Bareev with white. Shirov has never lost a playoff match in the FIDE format and he simply won with white and drew with black to go through. Shirov's worry about his next round opponent Grischuk is that he is such an unknown quantity.

7) Mallorca International Open

The Mallorca International Open took place December 2nd-10th 2000. Francisco Vallejo Pons won the event with 7.5/9 half a point clear of Zenon Franco Ocampos. My thanks to Alejandro Martinez Gonzalez for the games and results. Last week I mistakenly confused the Jose Maria Bellon (unrated) with his GM brother. I've corrected that this week in the games section.

8) Bundesliga

The Bundesliga round 3 and 4 took place December 9th-10th 2000. With players such as Khalifman and Adams still involved in the FIDE Championships there were a number of key players missing. The battle of the leading clubs Porz and Solingen ended in a draw. In a contraversial move USV Magdeburg and SV Werder Bremen played their fifth round match on the Friday night however they argued that taking the opportunity to play the match early whilst both teams were in the same town would save them a lot of money in travel. My thanks to Axel Fritz and Juergen Daniel for their help. There will almost certainly be corrections to at least some of the games but many corrections have already been made.

13) Peter-Heine Nielsen vs Denmark/World

Danish chess grandmaster Peter Heine Nielsen has challenged the chess players of the world at Politiken's web site. The game opened with the grandmasters first move on Monday September 25th and is played on the internet - and you have the opportunity to participate at http://www.politiken.dk After each of Peter Heine Nielsen's moves, Politiken's chess expert Sune Berg Hansen will suggest some relevant counter moves. You may vote on the moves via e-mail before the game continues. There will be 24 hours between each move.

Internet coverage: http://seagaard.dk/stormesterskak or http://politiken.dk/skak

Søren Søgaard reports: The "World" is still fighting! But now "the World" is fighting for a draw! The "World" had there chances in the Middle Game to make GM Peter Heine Nielsen working hard to equalise. Now the game is in balance, but it's still very complicated and I would not be surprised if "Heine" can win a long endgame. We will see. At the Discussion board http://debatten.pol.dk/kode?14@@.ee95842 the "World" is analysing the position extensively and they are now concerned about there chances in the endgame. Maybe "the World" can hold a draw, in this highly interesting game. The first part of the game has being played at a very high level, but I have the feeling that Heine could have been the first GM to loose in such a match. But it's very difficult to beat a Grandmaster, especially in a team-match where 300-400 people has to agree about the moves!
