My thanks to Davor Golek and Jozef Sith for their Olympiad help, Jakub Fuksik, Ilona and Laszlo Nagy, Johan Zwanepol, Christophe Bouton, Tony Kosten, Miklos Orso, John Fernandez, Juan Sangés, Luís Santos, Alan Cowderoy, Søren Søgaard, Thomas Leckner, Alexander Baburin, Lanfranco Bombelli, Adolivio Capece and all those who helped with this issue.
Whilst its been a great month or two for chess its very hard work to keep up. This week saw the finish to a very enjoyable Olympiad, also the quality of games made available has vastly improved and the games given so far in TWIC have also been much improved. Please scrap the Olympiad games from the last two issues, this issue gives all the men's and women's olympiad games in the best version I can manage. I can perhaps take it a little easier for just less than two weeks before we start with the FIDE World Chess Championships in India.
The 34th Chess Olympiad took place in Istanbul, Turkey 28th October - 12th November 2000. This was a great event with only a few top players missing, Kasparov and Kramnik for Russia (involved in their match in Russia) and Anand for India (surely with their performance this time he can return as top board and lead a strong challenge). Russia were the favourites and with a few scares, they lived up to the billing. Khalifman as FIDE Champion was board one (probably a little high) and only scored 50% losing interesting clashes with Leko and Topalov but powered by Alexander Morozevich on Board 2 who performed to 2803 (Bronze Medal for his board see his round 12 victory over Artashes Minasian) and rising star Alexander Grischuk (bronze medal for 2nd reserve) they came home easily with two quick 2-2 draws in their final two matches. The silver medal was deservedly taken by surprise package Germany. The 11th seeds were powered by stellar efforts from Artur Jussupow and Rustem Dautov with TPRs of 2782 and 2776 respectively. The Ukraine edged out Hungary for the Bronze medal largely as a result of a huge 8.5/11 performance from rising star Ruslan Ponomariov. Having said that Hungary also had their star. Judit Polgar has lead the Hungarian team in the past, this time she was on board three and scored 10/13 the second highest points total of any player in the Olympiad.
There were some of the most competitive Olympiads in recent years. The eighth placed India (seeded 31) have two young players in Abhijit Kunte and Krishnan Sasikiran promise much for the future. However this competitiveness led to some poor results for some teams. Number 2 seeds England finished 7th but this even looks quite good compared to number 7 seeds USA's finish in 26th and number 9 seeds Netherlands 33rd placed finish.
In the women's Olympiad China were impressive winners ahead of Georgia and Russia.
After a very ropey start the FIDE coverage became quite acceptable at the end but its insistance on individual pages for each game is stupid and does not produce good viewing. I must thank Davor Golek (1st Croatian Chess Home Page http://jagor.srce.hr/~davgolek) for sending me the games and any corrections as they appeared. Without his help I'm sure I would have got both eye strain and RSI before the end of the Olympiad. Also to Jozef Sith for producing a nice version of the standings.

Manhattan Chess Club Club Championship by John Fernandez The Historic Manhattan Chess Club held its open championship November 3rd through the 5th at its new location, the New Yorker Hotel in New York City (also the site of the 1998 and 2000 New York Opens.) GM Leonid Yudasin won the event with a near flawless 4.5/5. Since GM Yudasin is not a club member, the next highest club members, Eric Cooke and Asa Hoffmann held a blitz playoff for the title. Despite having two winning positions, Hoffmann's speed was not at the level of Cooke's, and Cooke won the title by a 2-0 record. Yudasin's lone draw came at the hands of Rafal Furdzik's very nice combination in round 2. Mr. Furdzik had a fantastic tournament, drawing the GM (Yudasin) and being IM Jay Bonin and FM Asa Hoffmann, in addition to your reporter, before the devil took his deal back in round 5, when he lost to Cooke. The other, and even bigger story was Peter Sloan Aravena, fresh off the bus from his upstate New York College, pulling a score of 3 points and with it a 2262 FIDE performance. Having a final round pairing on board 1 against Leonid Yudasin would be daunting for most, but Peter happily trotted out the Latvian Gambit, which sadly was not enough for him to combat the very experienced and strong Grandmaster. His result, coupled with his earlier success at the Marshall Fall Futurity, will mean he should have a very high FIDE rating on the January 2001 list, FIDE ratings committee willing. While not very top-heavy (many time champ GM Joel Benjamin was playing in Cap D'Agde, and other events around the nation had other American GMs playing), a full 2/3 of the field was FIDE rated, and upsets abounded. Once again, Nick Conticello did a fantastic job running the event smoothly and without any disputes. The 4th OIBM in Bad Wiessee took place October 28th-November 5th 2000. Alexander Nenashev, Igor Khenkin, Konstantin Landa, Simen Agdestein, Ildar Ibragimov, Vladimir Epishin, Eduardas Rozentalis, Viktor Gavrikov, Igor Glek, Gerald Hertneck, Eric Lobron, Valeri Beim, and Stefan Kindermann were in the field.
Thomas Leckner reports: Beginning in different languages Norbert Kerkel, district president in the Bad Wiessee area and protector of the 4th OIBM, welcomed the participants to Bad Wiessee during the opening ceremony. And this polyglot speech was a good idea for the nearly 100 foreign chess-players coming from 27 different countries to the lake Tegernsee. The event was sponsored by Bank Hofmann (Zurich, Switzerland).
Altogether 86 FIDE-title-holders competed to become the successor to Alexander Shabalov, the winner of last year's event. Some grandmasters had to cancel their participation in Bad Wiessee, because of the chess-olympiad in Istanbul, which was held at the same time. Nevertheless Bad Wiessee had a high-quality field with 26 grandmasters and two female grandmasters. And the number of participants was greater than ever before: 495 chess-players took part in Bad Wiessee 2000, 116 more than last year and the organisers had a lot of work due to the huge field. But again the chess-club of Tegernsee, lead by Horst and Thomas Leckner succeeded in holding a perfect tournament. All participants got a very good environment so they had an opportunity to play their best chess. The 4th OIBM was the largest open chess-tournament in Germany and also one of the largest in Europe.
The ELO-favorite was GM Alexander Nenashev (ELO: 2645) who got his German passport only some weeks ago. In round 3 Nenashev had to accept a draw against IM Martin Senff (ELO: 2369). There was even worse news for GM Igor Khenkin, he lost his game in round 3 against Janusch Koscielski (ELO: 2376). GM Lev Gutman (ELO: 2519) got off to a good start in the early rounds. He won one game after another and was the only grandmaster with 6/6. Even after round 7 he was leading the tournament after a draw against the Israeli GM Vitali Golod (ELO: 2590). But in round 8 Gutman had to play against GM Konstantin Lerner (ELO: 2574) from the Ukraine. Early in the game Lerner sacrificed the exchange for two pawns and so it was clear, that Lerner would not be satisfied with draw. And indeed he ground down Gutman in an interesting game. At the same time GM Gerald Hertneck (ELO: 2541) succeeded in winning a fantastic game against Vitali Golod. And also Nenashev was up again, after some lucky wins against GM Viktor Gavrikov (ELO: 2535) and IM Pawel Jaracz (ELO: 2496). So three grandmasters had 7 points going into the last round. Everything was unclear, especially as there were also 12 players with 6½ points. So the spectators were really surprised, when in the last round Lerner made a quick draw against Nenashev.
But Nenashev was lucky again. Hertneck could not win against Khenkin and as a result again a chess-player named Alexander won the event: Alexander Nenashev with only a half buchholz point advantage over the rest of the field.
Also the fight for the prize of best female was very interesting. WGM Maia Lomineishvili (ELO: 2412) from Georgia had to compete against WIM Nora Medvegy (ELO: 2339) from Hungary and against the German WGM Oksana Sarana (ELO: 2237). Only Sarana made a mistake in the last round, but Lomineishvili and Medvegy reached 6½ points. The prize for the best senior was given to Werner Szenetra (ELO: 2193).
Actually FM Fabian Doettling (ELO: 2475) was the best youth-player U20. But of course he preferred getting the prize for 6th place! So IM Dimitrij Bunzmann (ELO: 2484) got the trophy for the best youth-player. The only 14 year old IM Andrei Volokitin (ELO: 2488, Ukraine) also scored 7 points. Rating-prizes were given to Martin Senff (rating<2400), Aleksandar Kaminik (rating<2200), Moritz Richter (rating<2000), Georg Meier (rating<1800) und Marco Baldauf (rating<1600).
At the closing ceremony on November 5th Egidio Parigi from Bank Hofmann presented the trophies. Before he thanked the chess-club of Tegernsee for the good organisation. His special thank was to Leckner family who managed to organise this great event again. Mr. Parigi was not sure, if Bank Hofmann will sponsor again next year but he pointed out, that the tournament is something very special in his eyes. And he made clear, that this tournament should be held again next year.

Søren Søgaard reports: The "World" is fighting! With the move 20...e5 that won with 12 votes over 20...Bd7 the "World" is fighting for the initiative, and the outcome of the game is very open. It will be interesting to see if GM Peter Heine Nielsen will fight for the initiative with 21.Nxb5 or play a more quite move. The first part of the game has being played at a very high level, both by the "World" and GM Peter Heine Nielsen who chose a very complicated variation in the opening.

Kramnik and Lautier gave interesting interviews to the French TV station TF1. There is a French transcript of the most interesting parts but the interview with Kramnik is mostly in English in real audio.
Link: http://www.tf1.fr/vod/echec/kramnik/index.htm
He also gave a simul on Saturday in the Senat against personalities, journalists and Marie Sebag (14 years old) the all category French women's champion. Kramnik scored +17 =2 -1, Marie scrapped a draw and Kramnik conceeded the draw to the last-to-finish, the French singer Guy Beart (father of actress Emmanuelle Beart) in a hopeless ending N + 2p vs N. Out of the 20 boards, Kramnik had 10 Whites and 10 Blacks and lost to the journalist of French daily "Liberation", Gerard Desportes.
NL - Groningen, November 1, 2000 Press release
Groningen to organize the European Chess Championship in 2001 It is almost certain that the 2001 European Championship will be held in Groningen. This week the European Chess Union (ECU) informed Mr. Johan Zwanepol that it has selected Groningen as the venue of this important tournament.
For the Chess Foundation Groningen (SSG) this is an important boost. However, to secure the tournament financially, SSG has decided to cancel this year's traditional Groningen Christmas Festival.
Although SSG has contacts with several candidate-sponsors, it is by now too late to complete the organization of this large scale event. The decision to cancel the 2000 tournament implies that there will be a one-year break in a long tradition. Starting in 1963 Groningen has organized a strong international chess tournament every year.
The European Chess Championship has recently been added to the international calendar. The inaugural tournament was held in July 200 in Saint-Vincent, Italy. It attracted many European top players and it is expected that a substantially higher number will play in Groningen next year.
Together with this international top event in December 2001, the continuation of the traditional Groningen chess festival is guaranteed once again.
The VIII "Chigorin Memorial" took place October 31st - November 10th, 2000. The 9 round Swiss system event had a large entry which included GMs Lastin (2633), Dolmatov (2600), Najer (2590) Balashov (2590) with an entry of 235 participants in total. There were six players on 7/9 Valerij Filippov (who won with the best tie-break score), Evgeniy Najer, Alexey Korotylev, Petr Kiriakov, Maxim Sorokin and Alexei Eliseev.

London businessman Terence Chapman will play Garry Kasparov in a four game challenge match giving two pawns as odds. The match will be played in London on the 21st and 22nd April 2001.
Kasparov is quoted as saying: "The idea of the match at these odds is very interesting. I have waived any fees so that the proceeds can go to charity, in this case to the development of chess in schools worldwide which is being organised by the Kasparov Chess Academy - a not for profit organisation headquartered in Israel".
Garry Kasparov will begin each game with six pawns instead of eight. The missing pawns will be A and H in game 1, A and D in game 2, A and B in game 3 and A and E in game 4. Kasparov will be white in games two and four. Kasparov will have 60 minutes for all moves in each game and Chapman 90.

GM Alexander Baburin has been a familiar presence on the internet with his Coffee Break magazine. He is now involved in two new websites. http://www.gmsquare.com The idea is to provide a place on the Web to those GMs who would like to have some presence on the Internet and currently there are sites of three GMs there - Alexander Baburin himself, Alexander Morozevich and Lev Psakhis. Secondly at: http://www.chesstoday.net there will be a commercial chess service, providing daily news, interviews and instruction to a wide range of players. Each issue will feature one annotated game and news from around the world, while weekend issues will have some instructional materials, particularly useful for club players. Chess Today costs about $15 for 4 months.

The IECG Cup VI preliminary stage. IECG Cup is an open tournament: players of any rating are merged together. So this is a nice opportunity to play a wide range of opponents. Subscriptions are open until September 15. Entries received after this date are used for a replacement list, which will be closed on October 1st. The tournament will be launched on October 1st, for a duration of 11 months. All the unfinished games will be adjudicated. During the preliminary phase, all participants take part in a 7 men, single round tournament (so 6 games to play). The 2 winners of each section will be entitled to play in the next stage, starting in October 2001. All games count for IECG rating, of course.
The entry form for Cup VI is at: http://www.iecg.org/cupentry.htm The web entry form is the best method to be enlisted in the Cup, as the process behind is easier for us.
