The Braingames World Chess Championships between Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik finally kicked off on Sunday. This is Kasparov's first long match since 1995 and although pre-event publicity has been very slight I expect that the event will attract good coverage from the news media, especially if it turns out to be a real fight. Kramnik will be happy to have drawn the first game and got into the match. There will be four games this week and we should know a good deal more about how the match might shape up after them. I'm looking foward to it.
Hope you enjoy this issue
Mark
The Braingames World Chess Championships started on Sunday 8th October 2000. The 16 game match which takes place on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays between 8th October-4th November.
The first game although only 25 moves long was interesting for the choices made by the players. Kramnik has relied in recent years on the Petroff Defence when he plays e5 against e4. This time he played 2. Nc6 allowing Kasparov's Scotch. Kasparov however dodged this on the first occasion and played the Ruy Lopez. Its not clear whether Kramnik expected this but he played the relatively rare Berlin Defence. Kasparov spent a tremendous amount of time over the next few moves and Kramnik built an advantage of over an hour on the clock. At first Kasparov appeared to be building a big advantage but didn't manage to trigger a central push to open the position against Kramnik's under-developed position. In the end a position of dynamic equality was achieved and both players seemed happy to draw. This was an interesting skirmish which allowed both players to settle into the match. The match will pick up momentum this week I'm sure.
Time control 40 moves in 2 hours, 20 moves in 1 hour, followed by 30 minutes + 10 seconds per move.
The start of the first game was delayed by 15 minutes when the players made a late request for carpet on the stage. The conditions seemed to suit both players although Kramnik did observe that he would like better air-conditioning.

The First European Rapid Championships took place in the Hotel Zenit in Neum, Bosnia and Herzegovina in the same venue as the European Club Cup a few days earlier. There were two events a Rapid (30 minutes per player) which was an 11 rounds Swiss tournament taking place October 2nd-3rd and after a days break there were 20 double rounds (players paired against each other played two games, one as white, one as black) of Blitz (5 min per player) which took place October 4th-5th.
Damir Medak reports:
Rapid Championship: There were 82 players, amongst them 52 grandmasters, competing in an 11-rounds Swiss tournament. Each player started with 20 minutes and had an additional 10 seconds per move. Digital clocks were used. The prize money was shared by players on an equal number of points. Bosnian GM Ivan Sokolov dominated the tournament, scoring 6.5/7 against extremely strong opposition. He lost only his last game, allowing Alexey Dreev of Russia and Zurab Azmaparaishvili of Georgia to share the top prizes. However due to the best sun of progressive scores, Ivan Sokolov became the 1st European Rapid Champion and with it the trophy.
Blitz Championship: Only 52 players entered the blitz event, however 34 of them were grandmasters. They played 20 matches of 2 games with alternating colors. The Swiss system was applied. Each player had 5 minutes without increment for the game. Again the prize money was shared equally amongst the players on the same number of points. Encouraged by their success in the rapid tournament, Alexey Dreev and then Ivan Sokolov also took the lead in the blitz event. It was however GM Vladislav Tkachiev of France who, after starting with 0/2 (against Krunoslav Hulak) in the first round, nicely outplayed many strong grandmasters to take the lead with the 2 points- margin after 16 matches. Tkachiev, however, lost his last four games against Van Wely and Bogdanovski, and finished third. Dreev and Sokolov took their chance and shared the top two prizes. Because of his better sum of progressive scores, Alexey Dreev of Russia became the first European blitz champion and took the trophy.

John Donaldson reports: The 2000 Governor's Cup, held September 29-October 1, attracted over 200 players to one of the Midwest's premiere multi-section events. The top group lacked American GMs due to a scheduling conflict with the concurrent United States Championship which changed its dates late in the day, but had plenty of diversity with participants from seven countries and 17 states. GMs Alex Wojtkiewicz and Yury Shulman quickly drew their last round game to share first place, after winning key battles in round four against IM Sandor Kustar of Hungary and GM Alexander Goldin of Israel respectively. Teenager Joshua Zilmer of Wisconsin, rated only 1920, impressed with wins against two masters and a last round draw with FM Enkhbat Tegshsuren of Mongolia.
