1) Introduction

My thanks to John Saunders, Laszlo Nagy, Leonard Barden, Gunnar Björnsson, ajedrez21, Andrzej Filipowicz, Alon Shulman, Adrian Roldan, Marcel Juegel, Bill Townsend, David Thomas, Yvette Nagel Seirawan and all those who helped with this issue.

The 1st FIDE World Chess Cup was won by Viswanathan Anand who apart from a tough match against Gelfand looked very comfortable throughout. His return to form should stand him in good stead for the FIDE Championships later in the year. Anand now travels to the Sydney Olympics for a FIDE exhibition which also involves Alexei Shirov. The Chinese have made a move in the rating list. Although there has been some scepticism about some of the ratings of the lower rated players the performance of Xu Yuhua in winning the women's World Cup event and that of Ye Jiangchuan in the men's event suggest the coming of a new force in the game. There was an exciting finish to Zone 1.1 in Mondariz, Spain also this week. Today sees the start of the Najdorf Super-Final tournament, where interest will focus on the return of Anatoly Karpov to tournament play after a long break and the participation of Judit Polgar and Nigel Short.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) 1st FIDE World Cup

The 1st FIDE World Cup took place in Shenyang, China 1st-13th September 2000. I covered the event up until the final last week. Both the men's and women's finals followed a similar course with the first game being drawn and the second being won by white. Anand won a very interesting game on the white side of a French where he sacrificed the exchange for a couple of pawns against Bareev and then made them count. Xu Yuhua beat Nathalie Zhukova on the white side of a complex Alekhine's Defence in 74 moves this local win was obviously very welcome to the organisers.

5) First Saturday September

Laszlo Nagy reports: There were two First Saturday IM events which took place September 2nd-12th 2000. IM Miklos Orso won the IMA event but no norms. There was more luck in the IMB event which was won by Sate Husari of Syria with 8/11 and with it an IM norm she was half a point clear of IM Janos Dudas on 7.5 who was ahead of Ticia Gara on 7/11 which was enough for a WGM norm for her.

If you wish to play in next month's events you can contact Laszlo Nagy at firstsat@elender.hu

The Terence Chapman Award Pert-Chandler Match takes place September 14th-19th 2000. The FIDE rated match is part of Pert's Terence Chapman Award Scheme Gold award for English Juniors. Terence Chapman was himself was a strong Junior and British Under 14 champion in 1970. He instituted a number of annual awards for English Juniors this year, Pert took the 1000 pound Gold award and six others won 500 pounds. Chapman heads the IT consultancy services and software company the Terence Chapman Group which also sponsors the BCF Grand Prix (more details at: http://www.bcmchess.co.uk/news/grandprix9900.htm).

7) Nordic FIDE Zonal

The Nordic FIDE Zonal KO-Tournament 2000, organised by the Hellir Chess Club took place 5th-15th September in Reykjavík, Iceland. It was a knock out tournament with 24 players. There were just three rounds of mini-matches. The idea was to produce three winners to participate in the FIDE world championships. The final round pairings saw: Hannes Stefansson beat Margeir Petursson, Evgenij Agrest beat Lars Schandorff after a playoff and Sune Berg Hansen beat Einar Gausel. So Stefansson, Agrest and Sune Berg Hansen will play in the FIDE Championships later this year, with Einar Gausel being 1st reserve, Lars Schandorff is 2nd reserve and Margeir Pétursson 3rd reserve.

10) Herzeliya International

Alon Shulman reports: The city of Herzeliya (10 km. North of Tel Aviv) hosted an International Chess Festival for the fourth time. The center of attraction was the Cat. 9 International Tournament. The winner was English G.M Peter Wells who was undefeated with 7 out of 9. In the third round local Master Tal Haimovich managed to overcome a bad opening and achieved a winning position with the black pieces against the winner. However, Haimovich missed two wins and eventually lost the game. Wells flew on the wings of this victory while Haimovich scored only half a point in his remaining 6 games. Second was the Herzeliyan hope G.M Dov Zifroni who shared second place with German IM Jan Gustafsson, both with 6 out of 9. Gustafsson was very solid and if not for the "accident" he had against Wells he probably would have clinched the desired 6.5 points needed for the GM norm.

Ilya Botvinnik was a pleasantly surprise with his result and GM Zilberman achieved his expected result. GM Bykhovsky was solid but did not win any games. IM Boim played freely and openly and if it hadn't been for his tragic loss against Zilberman he would have been the tournament's surprise and would not have walked home empty handed. Kaspi with 3.5 and Frenchman Marcelin with 3 points were not at their best.

In the open weekend tournament, the favorite, GM Alex Finkel was surprised by the unrated Shai Porat and had to settle for fourth place. The winner was the Stanford Student from Herzeliya - Eithan Ilfeld who edged Shai Porat and Belgium Nimrod Feibish, all scored 4.5 out of 5. An interesting note is that the 15-year-old runner up comes from a chess family. 5 of the 6 Porat children: Shai (15), Dudi(14), Ido(13) Chen (9) and Motke (7) took part in the tournament (the 6th. and youngest daughter is only 3-years-old but can set all the pieces on the board...).

The festival included a simultaneous exhibition conducted by G.M Dov Zifroni against 25 dignitaries. Zifroni won 20 games, drew 4 and lost one game to Mr. Moshe Kihan. While the simultaneous exhibition was going on Master Tal Haimovich was playing 4 blindfold games against the 4 players that came first in the U-14 tournament. Haimovich won 2 games and lost 2.

12) The New York State Championship

Bill Townsend reports: The New York State Championship is the longest running tournament in the United States and may well be the longest-running event on earth. The 122nd edition of this venerable event took place Sept. 1-4 in the resort town of Saratoga Springs, NY. GM Joel Benjamin, who has won this event a record six times before, made it a lucky seven as he finished with an undefeated 5-1 record. Also at 5-1 were IM Daniel Edelman and FM Dmitry Schneider. All three split the prize money evenly but GM Benjamin got the trophy on tiebreaks. The key game of the final round was young Schneider's win over veteran GM Robert Byrne. After the game Schneider said he had been "incredibly lucky" and thought Byrne could have held the balance with 65. Bd6! Tied for fourth with 4½ were Hikaru Nakamura, IM Ronald Burnett, IM Jay Bonin, and Justin Sarkar. At 4-2 was Igor Nikolayev, along with experts Sam Barsky and Carl Adamec.

13) Larisa Yudina Honoured

In perhaps a strong indication of how the political winds in Russia are changing Russian President Vladimir Putin posthumously decorated the journalist Larisa Yudina with the order of courage on Monday September 11th for her brave conduct in the line of duty. She was found dead June 8, 1998, in the Kalmyk regional capital of Elista with multiple knife wounds and a fractured skull. The culprits have never been found. Yudina had often criticised Kalmykia's President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.
