The 1st FIDE World Chess Cup is coming to a close. The final will be between Viswanathan Anand and Evgeny Bareev. As far as I understand FIDE plans these events to form part of a complex qualification system involving more of these World Cups, existing top chess events and the present system which will in the end produce two players for a match for at least $1.5m. In addition to the FIDE rating list there will be a new FIDE ranking list which will decide the qualifiers. It will involve a bonus point system for performances in FIDE approved events. It remains to be seen how this will work out in practice.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The 1st FIDE World Cup takes place in Shenyang, China 1st-13th September 2000. The knockout event has reached the final which starts tomorrow. The favourite Viswanathan Anand will play Evgeny Bareev in a two game match followed by playoffs. Anand's progress to the semi-finals was relatively comfortable with easy qualification from the group stages and an easier than expected win against Vassily Ivanchuk. In the semi-finals he faced a tough test from Boris Gelfand which was only settled in a sudden death speed game. Bareev too topped his preliminary group but had a very tough time against Zurab Azmaiparashvili after losing the first game of their quarter final as white. He won a wild game to equalise the match and take it to a playoff which he won fairly comfortable. He met Gilberto Milos in the semi-finals and this was a tough match, Milos has definitely improved his reputation by his play in China, in the end after two draws in normal time-rate games Milos blundered distressingly in the first rapid playoff game when he dropped his Queen in a sterile position.
The event has the following format: The 24 entrants have been split into four groups of six players for the all-play-all preliminary sections which take place September 1st-5th 2000. The top two players in each group will go forward to the knockout stages (ties will be resolved via playoffs on September 5th). Knockout stages: Quarter Finals 7th-8th September, Semi-Finals 9th-10th September, Finals 12th-13th September. Each knockout match will be over two games with ties being resolved by playoff games at faster timerates.
I've given the games again as there are some corrections from last week. Also the games I gave with the date of August instead of September.

The Icelandic Chess Championships took place 23rd August - 3rd September 2000 in Kopavogur, Iceland. There were sixteen players in this KO event. John Viktor Gunnarsson won the event after losing the first game of the four game final against Throstur Thorhallsson and not equalisating the match until the final game four. He then lost the first game of the rapid playoffs, equalised in game two, then he took the lead for the first time in the match and drew the final game to take the title. I've done my best with the games from the official site but they're by no means perfect.

Robin Mackley reports that the shortlist for the BCF Book of the year 2000, judged by R B Edwards, Mike Fox and John Toothill, has been released. The short list has risen to five, but each covers a different subject or approach to the game. The short list is:
· A Gnat May Drink Jonathan Hinton privately published £15 The subtitle describes the book: one hundred annotated Games of Chess from 1900 to 1999. This selection of games, one for each year of the century, is in the author's words aimed primarily to entertain. He succeeds admirably by choosing mostly unknown games, which feature unusual positions and enterprising play and annotating them with great care.
· Kramnik My Life and Games Vladimir Kramnik and Iakov Damsky Everyman Chess £17.99 A highly topical book on the World Championship challenger. Kramnik's biography is written by Damsky. 53 selected games have been chosen by Kramnik himself and there in lies the heart of the book. His in-depth annotations are outstanding and the games superb. A study of these reveals that the forthcoming world championship match is not a foregone conclusion.
· Queen's Gambit Declined Matthew Sadler Everyman Chess £14.99 Specific opening books rarely feature in the Book of the Year awards as the writing rarely matches the analysis. But here is a treatise that is a delight to read not only for the knowledge displayed but for the humour and wit of the writing. A model book of its kind.
· Soviet Chess 1917-1991 Andrew Soltis McFarland £39.00 Soltis describes the rise, triumph and fall of the Soviet chess world in a highly readable, authoritative history. At all times Soltis has sympathy for the difficult economic environment and political predicaments in which the players often found themselves. Though expensive, the book is beautifully produced with tournament tables, photographs and numerous annotated games.
· The Road To Chess Improvement Alex Yermolinsky Gambit £17.99 Yermolinsky describes how he progressed from a strong player to grandmaster and USA champion. Essentially a book about practical playing problems, Yermolinsky discusses how he overcame them and the many difficulties he solved on the way. It is a valuable contribution on subjects not covered in many more theoretical texts. Yermolinsky, a native born Russian, writes in fluent, idiomatic American.

The IECG Cup VI preliminary stage. IECG Cup is an open tournament: players of any rating are merged together. So this is a nice opportunity to play a wide range of opponents. Subscriptions are open until September 15. Entries received after this date are used for a replacement list, which will be closed on October 1st. The tournament will be launched on October 1st, for a duration of 11 months. All the unfinished games will be adjudicated. During the preliminary phase, all participants take part in a 7 men, single round tournament (so 6 games to play). The 2 winners of each section will be entitled to play in the next stage, starting in October 2001. All games count for IECG rating, of course.
The entry form for Cup VI is at: http://www.iecg.org/cupentry.htm The web entry form is the best method to be enlisted in the Cup, as the process behind is easier for us.
