My thanks to Aleksander Czerwonski, Visweswaran Kameswaran, Stewart Reuben, Guy Dierx, Guert Gijssen, Laszlo Nagy, Milan Novkovic, Stephen Boyd, Michael Bezold, Notzai, Antonio Bento, Alain Talon, Biro Sandor, Videki Sandor, Rolf Menk, Nigel Johnson and all those who helped with this issue.
Boris Gelfand survived a tight finish to take clear first at the Rubinstein Memorial, reminding us he is still a class player. 19 year old Krishnan Sasikiran scored his best ever result in winning the Penta Media GM event. Its been a tremendously busy week with plenty of interest including the MSO tournament in London (Daniel Gormally has at last scored a GM norm after many narrow misses), the French and Spanish Championships, the IV Russian Cup final, the European under-20 Championships and much more.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The XXXVII Rubinstein Memorial in Polanica Zdroj took place August 17th-26th 2000. The participants were Alexei Shirov, Vassily Ivanchuk, Michal Krasenkow, Peter Svidler, Boris Gelfand, Zoltan Almasi, Sergei Movsesian, Alexei Fedorov, Loek Van Wely and Tomasz Markowski. There was also four 10 round Swiss Opens. The strongest being the Open A event won by Pavel Eljanov.
Boris Gelfand won the XXXVII Rubinstein Memorial with a fine score of 6.5/9 undefeated. This is his best result for a number of years. He beat Alexei Fedorov in round 1 (whose attacking play badly misfired throughout the event) and Peter Svidler in round 2, both with the black pieces, then Movsesian and Shirov in rounds 5 and 6 and was only in any real trouble against Markowski in round 8. Alexei Shirov and Loek Van Wely chased hard thoughout the event and both looked capable of winning the event, in the end they shared second place half a point behind. Peter Svidler had an extremely disappointing event scoring only 3.5/9.

The French Championships took place in Vichy August 15th-27th 2000. There were 10 GMs and there was an ELO average of 2507. The event had a slightly unusual structure. It was divided into 2 pools of 8 players in a round robin format. The top four in each group went on to the Haute (top) section and the bottom four in each group went on to play in the Basse (bottom) section. The players then played the final four rounds against the opponents in their section who they didn't play in the initial pool section. The French Champion was the player with the most points over the 11 rounds who was also in the Haute section. The Champion was Etienne Bacrot who lost just one game, against Jean-Marc Degraeve in their round 7 pool A game. On the final day Hauchard and Degraeve played off for 4th-5th and also Bauer and Nataf for 5th-6th place. In the women's event Marie Sebag won with 8.5/11. Marina Costagliola won the second game of their playoff to take second place ahead of Anne Muller.
There were over 900 participants divided into 7 tournaments: The main French Chess Championships, Women's Championships, Accession, Veterans and Opens A, B and C.
