The Rubinstein Memorial is shaping up tremendously with Gelfand, Shirov and Van Wely setting an incredible pace with 4/5 starts leaving the rest of the field well behind. FIDE with its World Championships, Olympiad and World Cup will be back fully in the news for the rest of the year. Indeed the number of top class events is the highest for a number of years.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The Court of Arbitration for Sports, Lausanne, scheduled the hearing for the case of GM Anatoly Karpov vs. FIDE for 18 August 2000 at its premises at Avenue de l'Elysee 28 at 8.00 am. FIDE had 2,5 hours to present its case. Its not clear when news will be available about the result. In response to an E-Mail to the court I was told: "According to our procedural rules, the two cases [Susan Polgar also has a case] that you mention are confidential and we cannot give you any information about them."
FIDE have got their chess exhibition during the Sydney Olympic Games. After agreeing to meet the costs and a lot of lobbying there will be a couple of exhibition events. Viswanathan Anand will play. The organisers intend Anand to play an exhibition rapid match against Shirov on Sep 25th and a simultaneous exhibition immediately afterwards against some of the athletes in the Olympics (as Kasparov did in 1992 in Barcelona). The next day an exhibition game between Anand and Darryl Johansen is planned for the centre of Sydney, with living pieces and a space age theme. It is reported that at least half a dozen FIDE and FIDE Commerce officials are intending to fly over to watch, including the FIDE President Kirsan Iljumzhinov. Ian Rogers was invited to take part via a letter to the Australian Chess Federation (no direct contact was madde to the player himself). He pre-empted this by declining to play in advance in a letter the Australian Chess Federation (ACF). Late on Sunday, Ian Rogers in his e-mailed letter to Mr. Graeme Gardiner, President, ACF said "Although I have yet to receive an official invitation from FIDE, I am writing to declare my unavailability to play in FIDE's chess exhibition at the Olympic Athletes' Village. Normally I am very proud to represent Australia at major chess events but the circumstances of this event and the likelihood that I would be regarded as an "Ambassador of FIDE" have led me to decline.'' Ian Rogers has been a long time critic of FIDE President Kirsan Iljumzhinov.

The French Championships take place in Vichy August 15th-27th 2000. There are 10 GMs and an ELO average of 2507. The event has a slightly unusual structure. It is divided into 2 groups of 8 players in a round robin format. The top 2 in each of the groups (A and B) go through to a 2 game semi-final. With one round to go Hauchard and Bacrot look odds on to go through from group A. Things are far more complicated in group B Christian Bauer leads with 4.5/6 ahead of Laurent Fressinet, Josif Dorfman and Jean-Rene Koch on 3.5/6.
There are over 900 participants divided into 7 tournaments: The main French Chess Championships, Women's Championships, Accession, Veterans and Opens A, B and C.

The Presov Chess Festival in Slovakia, took place August 12th-20th 2000. The main GM event was Category 10. Other events included an Open, National Open and other events such as simultaneous exhibitions, blitz and football.
First place in the Category 10 event was shared by Bartlomiej Macieja and Jiri Stocek who both scored 6.5/9 half a point clear of three players on 6 points. The event was also notable for the nightmare result of Irina Krush who won 1 and lost 8 games in the event. My thanks to Martin Mrva for the information.
