Grigorian and Norbert Friedrich. Many more weeks like this and TWIC is going to start missing issues. A large number of good events has meant that I've expended the outside amount of time that I can spare to TWIC. (please let me know if you sent me something I didn't use, I'm sure there's something, can't work out what at this stage!) This week has lead me to think about the future of chess reporting on the net. In this respect I think that things are looking good. Over the last few weeks various organisers have started offering material from their events in the future and of course we have seen tournament from throughout the World sent to TWIC in the last few weeks. Yet events like Dos Hermanas and before it Riga seem determined to remain secret with only small amounts of information "leaking" out many days after the start of the event. It is to be hoped that the posting of Eugeni K. Grigorian from the PCA Intel event will be just the start of the biggest events having a more immediate appearence on the net, direct from the organisers. At the moment their chosen communication method seems to be the fax. This seems most inefficient as many faxes are hard to read (the ones from the Rapidplay were dreadful) and only mean that to be useable the games have to be typed in again by the various publications that wish to use them (with innacuracies due to typos and illegibility.). Also it is quite apparant that most if not all chess journalists are on the net. (I have fun with Bill Hartston's column spotting material that definitely comes out of TWIC, Morozevich 1-0 Anand (2.1) would be a good one for Tuesday Bill) Nor would such postings have an adverse affect on ChessBase, ChessAssistant, TASC and NicBase. They should sell a lot more heavily to the amateur user whilst the professional will always need verified data. Magazines also can spend more time annotating, explaining and choosing good games from the increasingly large amount of choice that they have. It should be good for everyone. I hope that I have played a part in encouraging this trend. So here's hoping for a bit of action on the Dos Hermanas front first thing Monday morning. Hope you enjoy this action packed issue. Mark 2) Kasparov victorious in Riga ------------------------------- Kasparov easily obtained the draw required in the last round to win this event. I'd expected him to go for it against Gulko but a quiet draw occurred instead (Gulko has a plus score against Gary) Round 10 (1995.04.22) --------------------- Kasparov, Gary - Kengis, Edvins 1-0 Anand, Viswanathan - Vaganian, Rafael A 1-0 Kramnik, Vladimir - Ehlvest, Jaan 1-0 Yusupov, Artur - Ivanchuk, Vassily 1/2 Timman, Jan - Short, Nigel 0-1 Round 11 (1995.04.24) --------------------- Short, Nigel - Kramnik, Vladimir 1/2 Gulko, Boris - Kasparov, Gary 1/2 Ehlvest, Jaan - Anand, Viswanathan 0-1 Kengis, Edvins - Timman, Jan 1/2 Vaganian, Rafael A - Yusupov, Artur 1/2 My thanks to ChessAssistant for the remaining games left over from last week. Games have been very thin on the ground. I hope to have more next week. There are one or two in the games section. Karpov again is playing some nice stuff. Kamsky is struggling slightly but I expect a plus score from him. Many thanks to Bob Wade for sending me the faxes. Last night and today someone called Eugeni K. Grigorian posted many qualifier games and all the games from the Grand Prix so far. I assume he is a bulletin editor for the event (site EUGENI@kaspar.msk.su). I use these gamescores to check against the ones I'd already typed in and discovered 3 typos (all induced by not being able to read the original properly, the quality of the faxes varied between bad and dreadful, I gather Mr. Friedel from Compuserve had exactly the same problems). In two places the two sources were in direct contradiction I have indicated these points in the games section. Probably we'll have to wait for Kevin O'Connell to return to establish the truth. (also I have no seperate source for the games from round 1 day 2) I hope this is the start of the PCA posting the games from their events on the net, it really is the most accurate way of transfering the information throughout the World. It will also save everyone time and effort. Qualifier --------- 78 players consisting of 67 GMs and 11 IMs competed for the potentially most valuable qualification spots in the cycle. Anyone making it through to round two of the Grand Prix proper will automatically (if last year's rules still hold) make it to the next Grand Prix event too. Smirin qualified for the 5th time but has yet to make it through to the 2nd round in any event. Morozevich qualified by winning Lloyds Bank last year. This is a good opportunity for him. He has been strangely ignored for top invitations. It seems that unlike 3 or 4 years ago that there are few places available in the big events for raw talent. Those who made it then seem to garner all the invitations. Khalifman, Gulko, Speelman and Epishin all qualified for the first time. Speelman was reported to be extremely tired but relieved to have qualified. Final scores ------------- Khalifman, Smirin, Morozevich 8 Epishin, Speelman, Gulko 7.5 these players edged out others on 7.5/ Nigel Short finished 23rd in the field of 78. Here is a table generated from the games posted by Eugeni K. Grigorian. It at least indicates 50 of the players who played and the results that were obtained in the games posted. The tiebreak game is played at the timerate of 5 minutes for white and 4 for black. In the case of a draw black qualifies. Ilia Smirin has qualified an incredible 5 time for this event and lost every time. On at least a couple of occaisions he should have won and this time he dominated both games only to wreck his chances at the end. Alexey Vyzmanavin has played in all events so far on the strength of his semi-final place in the last Moscow Blitz coupled with some solid performances elsewhere. The vast majority of his income over the last year must have come from these events. He will now have to qualify to continue this run. In spite of his age, Korchnoi maintains his interest at least to the next event in this Grand Prix by qualifying. Yusupov playing his first event will see another now. ROUND 1 - Day 2 - 28/04/95 ---------------------------- Morozevich, Alexander RUS 2605 g 1 = 1.5 Gulko, Boris F USA 2595 g 0 = 0.5 Anand, Viswanathan IND 2715 g 1 = 1.5 Khalifman, Alexander RUS 2635 g 0 = 0.5 Speelman, Jonathan S ENG 2610 g 0 1 1 2.0 Topalov, Veselin BUL 2630 g 1 0 0 1.0 Kasparov, Gary RUS 2805 g = 1 1.5 Epishin, Vladimir RUS 2635 g = 0 0.5 ------------------------------------------------------------------ A couple of "normal" results with Anand and Kasparov qualifying. Kasparov won on time in a drawn position (he was a minute ahead on the clock.) in the second game. But thats life in these events. I'm delighted to see that Morozevich qualified for the next round. He impressed me greatly at Lloyds Bank, the time has come for the big organisers to INVITE him to their events. He qualifies for the next round of the Grand Prix. Speelman decided that he would like to confuse his opponent with unorthordox play. In game one he was rewarded by being destroyed in very few moves. He returned in game two to equalise before playing a very imaginative Queen sacrifice in the 5-4 blitz playoff. ROUND 2 - 29.04.95 ----------------------- Ivanchuk, Vassily UKR 2700 g 0 1 1 2.0 Korchnoi, Viktor SUI 2635 g 1 0 0 1.0 Kramnik, Vladimir RUS 2715 g 1 0 1 2.0 Yusupov, Artur GER 2660 g 0 1 0 1.0 Anand, Viswanathan IND 2715 g 0 1 1 2.0 Morozevich, Alexander RUS 2605 g 1 0 0 1.0 Kasparov, Gary RUS 2805 g = 1 1.5 Speelman, Jonathan S ENG 2610 g = 0 0.5 Some exciting matches were played today. The game of the event was played by Morozevich who destroyed Anand with the Kings Gambit in a stunning display. Anand's greater experience allowed him to win through in the match as a whole. Another oldy but goldy opening downs Anand. Everything went according to seeding in the other ties aswell so the top finishers from last year meet again in the semis. 5) Kropotkin (Krasnodar) (RUS) April 1995. --------------------------------------- Many thanks to Jon Speelman (who hand wrote a bulletin) and to Bob Wade for decyphering it and faxing it to me. This annual event usually attracts a strong field and this year was no exception. The top seeds were: GM Ian Rogers, IM Darryl Johansen, Dimitri Gedevani, IM Guy West and Alexsander Wohl. Ian Rodgers played up to his grandmaster status and took out the event with 6/7 closely followed by the current Australian Open champion Dinh Duc Trong from Vietnam and the Melbourne based Leonid Sandler, both on 5.5/7. I have enclosed two of Rogers' wins the first being a brilliant kingside attack involving the offer of his queen for a mating attack. The timing was 16 moves/1 hour and then 1 hour KO. The highest-rated, Mikhail Gurevich, began the tournament with six wins (showing his strength in the final zeitnot) allowing to be alone in the lead a half-point ahead of the "living legend" David Bronstein. At the seventh round, they drew their game and a win by Gurevich against the English International Master Gary Lane left him a full point ahead of International Master Vladimir Chuchelov. They quickly drew their game to allow an easy first place to Gurevich in this tournament. Rating Pts Perf 1. Gurevich, Mikhail BEL 2605 g 8/9 2714 2. Chuchelov, Vladimir BEL 2530 m 7/9 2569 3. The final position is fascinating (though completely lost for Anand) and the opening is interesting, too. The Evans Gambit is out of use in today's grandmaster chess, but Garry successfully revived an old, almost forgotten idea. Kasparov's 7.Be2 was regarded as a theoretical novelty, but I found a handful of games by M.A. Melts, who first used 7.Be2 in 1981! These game are mostly published as fragments only, cited from Correspondence Chess Yearbook No.4 and Schach-Archiv Jan/Feb 1993. My impression is that Kasparov has worked a lot about the variation; most likely he knew about these games and was well prepared for the variations after 7..d6, too. Concerning Anand's preparation, I'd like to know whether or not he ever analysed 7.Be2 before the game. What was really a novelty in the game? We'll have to ask Garry! My database shows that the first 9 moves were already played in the game Melts-Gajewski/USSR/1981(!). This game is not marked to be a correspondence game, but it may be one. M.A.Melts has tried this line in several corr-games since then. With the new move 10.Qh4 (instead of 10.Qf4) Garry seems to have improved in a variation which was given as good for White before. Tamplin http://www.traveller.com/chess/endings/ Note: This is a truncated version of the original database. It includes only the `maximal winning' positions. Databases (as they appear in the documentation): LP vs L QP vs Q RP vs R RP vs B RP vs Q and Q vs RP Q vs LL B* vs L N* vs B NN vs N Q vs R* QR vs B BN vs R R* vs Q and Q vs R* where the pieces on the right are the Black (inferior) side L (Light piece) = any of B and N * (wild card) = any of Q,R,B and N ---------------------------------------------------------- I first checked the position that appears after 4 moves in the study by J.Peckover, Gunst Mem. Ty., 1959: 6N1/1k6/8/3K1n2/8/8/5B2/8 i.e. in the BN vs N database +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | N | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | k | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | K | | n | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | B | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ The program correctly finds the unique solution: 5.Ke5 Ng7 6.Nf6 Kc7 7.Bh4 Kc8 8.Bg5 Kc7 9.Bh6 I then tried a study by D.Gurgenidze, 1976: 8/2P5/3r4/k7/2K5/8/4N3/8 i.e. of type NP vs R (not in database) Below is a transcription of my comments and the received answers. Comment [wp]: For White, there is no indication which of the generated moves leads to a win (nor that there is a win). When 1.Nd4 (the only winning move) is chosen, we get the following comment to the Black choices: `Black draws or wins after Rd7,Rb6,Ra6,Rf6,Rg6,Rh6,Kb6,Ka6', which simply is false. Explanation [jat] (abbreviated): The PN vs R database was apparently not created because of space limitations, due to its lack of importance. The program assumes that any position not contained in the database is not winnable by white. The program uses instead the R vs PN database, that shows the cases where black can win. Comment [wp]: Wouldn't be better if a msg `Database xyz does not exist' appeared instead? Explanation [jat] (abbreviated): Given the way the program is structured to access the databases, it is difficult to distinguish between `no such database', and that position is not in a database. Comment [wp]: If, for example, database PR vs R (for a win) exist, that doesn't mean that a database R vs PR (for a draw) exist, isn't so? Explanation [jat] (abbreviated): Yes, it will use the colors-swapped database if necessary, which is what it did in this case. In other words, the database contains positions of how PN can draw vs. R -- the databases don't distinguish between the inferior side drawing and winning (to save space in the huffman coding tables). The database not distinguishing between a win and a draw for the inferior side is definitely a design decision of the database itself. Comment [wp]: How about 4-man endings? Explanation [jat]: All 4-man endings are contained, that I am aware of. Thompson had a note in the README for the 3rd disk saying it would be the last one because there were only a few 5-man endings that weren't covered and they weren't very important. Here I checked the two famous 4-man studies (see TWIC 29) by Reti and Saavedra. The first one is of type P vs P and thus not in the database. The second is below. +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | P | r | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | K | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | k | | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ 1.c7 with a comment: White mates in 6 after 1.c7 Rd5+ with a comment: White mates in 5 after 2.Kb4 2.Kb4 Rd4+ with a comment: White mates in 4 after 3.Kb3 3.Kb3 Rd3+ with a comment: White mates in 3 after 4.Kc2 4.Kc2 with a comment: White mates in 2 after 4...Rc3+ I chose: 4...Rd4 with a switch of databases the comment became: White mates in 7 after 5.c8R 5.c8R Ra4 6.Ka4 etc. Then I set on a more systematic investigation using as the test case the Section for Malyutka (5-man study, meaning `a little one' in Russian) in Chavchavadze MT, 1987 (see EG, No.100, June 1990). Here are the results. 1st prize, D.Gurgenidze - 8/8/2P5/k1K2B2/8/8/3r4/8. Win. Database BP vs R does not exists, so we get similar problems as described above with `Black draws or wins after ....' comment. 2nd prize, V.Dolgov - 2q5/6R1/5N2/5k2/7K/8/8/8. Draw. Database RN vs Q does exist, but apparently only for `White to move and win' situations, so we get similar problems as above. Explanation [jat}: Any problem where the desired result is a draw will not give optimal play in any case, since it doesn't distinguish between a good drawing move and a poor drawing move. It will however choose only moves that maintain the draw. In addition to that basic problem with the database structure, there is the problem you have run into in that a position not found in the database is treated the same as a database not found. In other words, "known to be a drawn position" and "unkown" are treated the same. 3rd prize, E.Dobrescu - 3K4/7b/2r2k2/Q7/8/8/8/8. Win. +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | K | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | b | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | r | | | k | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | Q | | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ 1.Qa1+ with a comment: White mates or reduces the ending in 5 moves after Qa1+ 1...Kf7 the move chosen by the composer 2.Qh1 with a comment: White mates or reduces the ending in 2 moves after Qh1 Note: composer's `solution' was 2.Qa7+, which is inferior. As a consequence program found a devastating DUAL. (1) HM, A.Gillberg - 8/5P2/P4K2/k7/8/8/8/r7. Win. Database PP vs R does not exists, so we get similar problems as described above. Explanation[jat]: Well, including databases that have multiple pawns dramatically increases the size of the databases as does supporting endings with more pieces. (2) HM, D.Gurgenidze - 1rk5/8/8/3K4/3N4/8/8/4R3/ Win. Database RN vs R is not listed as available, but it works, so it must exist. +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | r | k | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | K | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | N | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ | | | | | R | | | | +---+---+---+---+---+---+---+---+ 1.Kc6 with a comment: White mates or reduces the ending in 10 moves 1...Kd8 2.Kd6 Rb2 3.Nc6+ Kc8 4.Re8+ Kb7 all as in the composer's solution, but 5.Rb8+ OR 5.Na5+, which creates a dual. (3) HM, V.Vlasenko - K2k4/8/6n1/8/8/7p/B7/8. Draw. Database B vs NP does not exists, so we get similar problems as described above. (4) HM, D.Gurgenidze - 8/8/8/8/5rk1/4p3/8/3R3K. Draw. Database R vs RP does not exists, so we get similar problems as described above. Conclusions: The results of the test are somewhat disappointing, many types of endings are left out of the databases, in most cases they are not recognized as such and the automatic responses are confusing. When the program works it does wonders. Here the composers show all the human inadequacies in the analysis of endings. [jat]: Please remember that what you are seeing is something I wrote in about 5 hours to access KT's databases. It is not a finished product by any means. [wp]: John deserves our gratitude for the job he has done. I hope that if he gets enough encouragement from chess enthusiasts he will be willing to put some extra 5 hours to finish the work he has started and give us KT's databases in their full glory. Minor comments: 1. Some answers come with with a (signed) weight function (in parantheses after the move), thus indicating which move is the strongest (longest or shortest to win, depending on the sign), some without. 2. On black&white monitor the White pieces do not show. 3. Comments and questions can easily be sent; the response is swift and friendly. 4. The diagram and the analysis do not appear simultaneously on my screen. [jat]: All fits on an 1152x900 screen. I plan on making a smaller diagram size available as an option so people using smaller displays can fit more on the screen. 5.
