The Hartwall Heart Of Finland open took place in Jyväskylä Finland, 19th-23rd of July 2000. There was a 6 way tie on 7/9 with Viktor Gavrikov having the superior tie-break. This was Vladimir Bagirov's final event. He was winning his 4th round game when he became ill during an attempt to reconstruct the position after a time scramble (they made around 45 moves) but died early the following morning in hospital.

The Dutch Open Championships took place in Dieren July 18th-27th 2000.
Anjo Anjewierden reports: The Dutch Open dates back to 1873, the year the Dutch Chess Federation was founded. Over the last decades Dieren has been the venue attracting strong GM's in the open section and aspiring amateurs in the other sections. This year the number of participants totalled more than 400.
Round 7 turned out to be crucial for the final outcome of the tournament. In the game Dvoirys-Zilberman the player with the white pieces was lucky that Zilberman missed the tactical shot: 32... Bg3 with threats of a back-row mate. Dvoirys was in time-trouble and Zilberman (in Anand-style) had more than an hour on the clock. The game petered out to a drawn ending and Dvoirys retained his chances to win the tournament. The game Meijers-Van der Weide was won by White. This put a temporary end to Van der Weide's excellent play and results in the tournament. Meijers score of 6/7 took him to the lead.
In round 8 Meijers lost to Jacob Murey when he overplayed his position. Afterwards Meijers complained about a draw offer in a position in which he was better. Dvoirys won against Dutch Fritz-killer John van der Wiel. The latter seemed to enjoy the tournament, but was a bit off optimal form. Murey led with 6,5/8.
The last round added drama. Dvoirys' imaginative play against Murey did not pay off and it seemed certain that Murey would win the tournament. Murey exchanged into a draw ending with an exchange down knowing that a draw would be sufficient for clear first. Dvoirys actually offered a draw which was refused by Murey!! In the end Dvoirys won the game and was the only player to score 7 points. The difference between first and shared second place was fl. 3250.
Karel van der Weide was the best Dutch player at 6,5/9 and he earned an entry for the closed championships in 2001 (provided the formula is retained).
If you like to play chess in nice rural surroundings put 19-29 July 2001 in your aganda.

The International Open in Bergen, Norway took place 21st-29th July 2000. The event was a nine round Swiss System event with 50 players. Alexander Volzhin finished in clear first place with 7/9 half a point clear of Peter Heine Nielsen, Einar Gausel, Rune Djurhuus, Davit Lobzhanidze and Andrew Ledger.
Eirik Gullaksen reports: Bergen Chess International was played in the Radisson SAS Royal Hotel in Bergen (Norway) 21-29th July 2000. GM Alexander Volzhin of Russia made a very solid impression and took first place with 7 points (5 wins, 4 draws). Danish GM Peter Heine Nielsen led through most of the tournament, but suffered a last-round loss against GM Einar Gausel and had to settle for a shared second place. Norwegian Kristian Trygstad made his first IM-norm with 5.5 points, while IM Davit Lobzhanidze (Georgia) was half a point short of the GM-norm. The unrated Norwegian Per Manne made a very good impression and only a last-round loss against GM Rune Djurhuus kept an IM-norm out of his grasp. IM Frode Elsness entered the tournament as a substitute after 4 rounds. Elsness played very well and made a 2600 performance in his five games, including draws against GM Sergei Tiviakov and GM Yuri Yakovich.

The Politiken Cup (22nd Copenhagen open) took place 17th-28th July 2000 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
GMs Lars Bo Hansen, Jonny Hector and Boris Gulko shared first place. England's Luke McShane scored his final GM norm and its possible that he has also met the current criterion on rating and will get the title but this is subject to FIDE ratification as he doesn't currently have the necessary 2500 rating.
