Vladimir Kramnik won the Dortmund SuperGM event on tie-break from Viswanathan Anand, the last event he plays before taking on Kasparov in London in October. This week also saw the venue for this match announced, the Riverside Studios. Dortmund was notable for the participation of DEEP JUNIOR which finished on a 50% score. In another event in Lippstadt, Germany the program PCONNERS actually won a weaker event. Whether computers have any place in such events I severely doubt. Its strange that events such as AEGON and the Harvard Cup which were man-machine contests are no longer on the chess calendar if they are such publicity winners.
Hope you enjoy this issue
Mark
The Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting 2000 took place July 7th-16th 2000 in the Dortmund Theatre. The final round saw Viswanathan Anand beat Robert Huebner and the leader Vladimir Kramnik draw with Khalifman. Both finished on 6/9 with Kramnik taking first place on Sonnenberger tiebreak. Leko could also have finished on 6 but lost to DEEP JUNIOR after having two draw offers turned down. The computer program DEEP JUNIOR 6 finished on 50%. I have presented the results with and without including those of the computer.
In addition there was a GM tournament won by Eckhard Schmittdiel.

The Schuhplatter Chess Tournament took place in the Hotel Bayerischer Hof in Munich, Germany, July 4th-15th 2000. It was the 9th Veterans vs Ladies contest organised by the "Association Max Euwe" in Monaco and was sponsored by J.J. van Oosterom. After round 7 the Ladies led by 6 points but the veterans pulled back to a final score of Ladies 27.0 - Veterans 23.0, a win by 4 points.
The Ladies Team captained by Ljubomir Ljubojevic is: Zhu Chen (China), Alisa Galliamova (Russia), Nana Ioseliani (Georgia), Xie Jun (China), Sofia Polgar (Israel). They take on the Veterans Team Hans Bouwmeester (The Netherlands), Vlastimil Hort (Germany he is also the captain) Victor Korchnoi (Switzerland) Vassili Smyslov (Russia) Mark Taimanov (Russia).

The 10th Lippstadt Tournament ran July 6th-16th 2000. The event included a computer programme P. ConNers which won the event. The event used the unusual scoring system of 3 points for a win and 1 point for a draw. PCONNERS would have been level with second place Zbynek Hracek (but with a better tie-break) if the normal scoring system had been used. Young British talent Luke McShane who had a good result last year had a nightmare this time.

The 10th Smith & Williamson Young Masters takes place from the 14th-22nd July this year at King Edward's School, Witley (nr. Guildford). This event remains as England's premier junior event in which U21 players have the opportunity to obtain IM norms, as Karl Mah did last year. Andrew Webster, Richard Bates and Nicholas Pert lead on 2.5/3. Joseph Conlon had to miss his games from rounds 2 and 3 and will catch up during the tournament. My thanks to Richard Palliser.

Jack Peters reports on the Southern California Championships which took place July 8th-9th and July 15th-16th at Eduard Gufeld's club, Chess Academy, in Los Angeles. The tournament counts as a state championship for the chess "state" of Southern California. The Southern California Chess Federation organized the event, and John Hillery directed capably.
Peters himself shared first place with Cyrus Lakadawala on 5.5/7. Tony Davis played only 3 games the rest he defaulted. There are some differences in the rating list with Jack Peters being listed under John Peters and Ambartsoumian being list as Ambarcumjan.

Judged by GM Ron Henley, the Best Game when to Justin Sarkar for his win over Dmitry Schneider and Best Endgame went to Andrew Whatley for his win over Steve Winer.

The murder of Kalmykian journalist Larissa Yudina has been a thorn in the side of FIDE (and Kalmykian) President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov since it occurred in June 1998. It has never been proven that Kirsan Ilyumzhinov was involved in the murder. However it is a case of great importance to his reputation. A controversial new book Schaakmat in Kalmukkië (Checkmate in Kalmykia) has been published in the Netherlands. Written by Martin van den Heuvel he claims to throw more light on the matter. The central allegation is that Kirsan's brother Vyatsheslav was implicated in the affair too (the witness who claims to have seen him subsequently died in a car crash). The book was savaged in New In Chess 4 of 2000 where the unnamed reviewer in NIC Cafe says it is a clumsily written rehash of known facts and gives a one sided picture of Ilyumzhinov. However this view is not universally shared, there does seem to be new information on murders and misappropriation of subsidies in Kalmykia. Also my source says the clumsy writing is much overstated. Why is it every account by journalists not connected with chess seems to have a very negative opinion of human rights in Kalmykia?
Martin van den Heuvel is a renowned Eastern Europe expert and was in Kalmykia in December 1999 as an observer of the elections for the UN.
You can read a brief account of the book in Tim Krabbé diary section of his site at:
