The new FIDE rating list was released today. As expected Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik are World numbers 1 and 2, they meet in a match later this year in London. Anand who has been displaced as World number 2 by Kramnik is at 3 and meets Kramnik in the Dortmund tournament that starts later this week. The other big climbers in the top 10 are Adams who gains 40 points to move to 5 in the World and Krasenkow who is at 10 up from 26 in the last list.
Hope you enjoy this issue
Mark
The FIDE ELO Rating list for July 2000 was released today. Heading the list at 2849 still is Garry Kasparov (he lost just a couple of rating points). Kramnik (who plays Kasparov in a match this autumn) London has gained 12 points to take the World number 2 spot from Anand who lost just 6 points during his recent severe loss of form (he looked back to something like his best in Frankfurt and it will be interesting to see what happens in the Dortmund tournament that starts this week where Kramnik also plays). Morozevich gains 8 points in 4th, Adams moves into 5th place after he gained 40 points both displacing Shirov who lost 5. Leko drops one place to 7th but is up 18 rating points, Ivanchuk 8th up 10, Topalov 9th up 5 and Krasenkow up 41 in 10th place knocking Evgeny Bareev out of the top 10.
Top Juniors are Ruslan Ponomariov of the Ukraine (2630 born 11.10.83), Etienne Bacrot (2613 born 22.01.83), Alexander Grischuk (2606 31.10.83 ) with in 7th place Bu Xiangzhi of China (2570 born 10.12.85), moving up. Judit Polgar of course heads the women's list with her 2656 rating with Xie Jun of China in second at 2568.

There was a match between Etienne Bacrot and Zoltan Almasi in Szeged 27th June - 2nd July 2000. Almasi won 3.5-2.5, his two wins came from games where the Frenchman played quickly in the opening but then found himself in lost positions. My thanks to Peter Gubics for the news.

The Ukranian Zonal 1.9 (also the "Absolute Championships of the Ukraine") took place in Ordzhonikidze June 7th-19th 2000. There were three FIDE qualification places available from the Zonal. The first place was taken by Alexander Onischuk who scored 6.5/9 half a point clear of the trio Vladimir Baklan, Vereslav Eingorn and Oleg Romanishin. Romanishin lost out on the final qualification place due to an inferior 'truncated Buchgolz' tiebreak. Onischuk won from a drawish position against Ovsejevitsch, after he found he needed a win due to his tie-break position. It seems to have been up to the organisers of the Zonal what tie-break method was used, with playoffs used in some zonals and tie-breaks in others. The top four players plus Vassily Ivanchuk and Ruslan Ponomariov (both already qualified for the FIDE Championships) will make up the Ukranian Olympiad side.
My thanks to Mikhail Golubev.

The VII Linares International Tournament took place 24th-26th June 2000, in the city of the same name (300 Kms south of Santiago). The tournament was a 9 rounds swiss system, with time rates of 45 minutes, 1 hour, and 1 hour 30 minutes. The first six prizes were US$2500, US$1250, US$800, US$700, US$600 and US$500
Andrés Molina reports: this VII version of Linares International Open -in Chile- was an outstanding meeting, with the visit of the British GM Nigel Short and an exciting final round. The tournament ended with a quadruple tie between GM Pablo Zarnicki (who won by Medium-Bucholz system), GM Nigel Short, and Chileans IM Rodrigo Vásquez and IM Pablo Toloza. The tournament highlights were the triumph of Toloza over Short (in round 4) and the triumph of the blind boy Tomás Figueroa in 20 moves over the FM Cristhian Montero, who played without sight of the board in respect to his rival, an attitude very much commented on by the rest (this was round 7). There was a friendly match between women's teams from Hungary and Yugoslavia which took place in Szeged over the weekend of June 25th-26th 2000. The double round match was over six boards with the bottom two boards being reserved for players under-18. Hungary won the match 7-5 (including a decisive 4-0 sweep of the bottom two boards). Yugoslavia brought almost their strongest available Olympiad side apart from Maria Manakova for the top four boards. The Match was sponsored by the Hungarian Chess Federation and the Hotel Forras in Szeged and was played in excellent conditions. The Arbiter was GM Zsuzsa Veroci. There are plans for a return match in Yugoslavia prior to the Olympiad in Istambul.
My thanks to FM Slobodan Adzic (owner of Chess Press and Chess Express in Szeged and Novi Sad) for the information. He and Gabor Turi provided technical support for the match.
Additional report by Sinisa Joksic: Yugoslavia won the lady's part of the match against Hungary 5-3 in Szeged. However Hungary's girls won all the games on the final two boards! The Hungarian town of Szeged hosted the event July 25th-26th 2000. Both selections played a double round. Without the Polgar sisters, Yugoslavia was the clear favorite before the match but the games were very tough. Ildiko Maric surprised Alisa Maric, Natasa Bojkovic played well and Svetlana Prudnikova and Irina Chelushkina used their experience to win. Sisters Ticia and Anita Gara, easily beat the sisters Nadezda and Andjelija Stojanovic. There was simply, a big difference in class.
