The Frankfurt Chess Classic has again proved a truimph for Hans-Walter Schmitt. This time he got the top ten players in the World to participate, something that may only have been achieved in modern times before at an Olympiad (or possibly never!). Every year he manages something to top the previous years event, how he proposes to do that next year I don't know. Alexei Shirov won the Merida tournament then was in action just three days later in Frankfurt, he's probably due a rest.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The Frankfurt Chess Classic 2000 took place June 16th-25th. In top two tournaments Viswanathan Anand won the Fujitsu Siemens Giants and Michael Adams won the masters. These two events had the top 10 players in the World.
In the January FIDE list Kasparov, Anand, Kramnik, Shirov, Morozevich, Leko (who all played in the Giants), Adams, Ivanchuk, Bareev, and Topalov were the top 10. Organiser Hans-Walter Schmitt asked the last time an event had the top 10 ELO rated players, Martin Bennedik suggests that if it has happened it must have been in an Olympiad.
There were six main events. The Fujitsu Siemens ChessBase Challenge between all the players from the giants except Kasparov against Fritz was tied 5-5. There were three simultaneous exhibitions on June 19th-20th. The results were as follows: Kasparov +35, -0, =5; Ivanchuk +31, -4, =5 and Svidler +15, -1, =0. There was an event advertised as a Fischer-Random match between Artur Jussupow and Fritz which the computer won 2-0. However it was in reality just shuffle or randomised chess as the organisers did impliment the rules for the initial position as Fischer envisaged them (there is a brief note at the end of the Frankfurt coverage below my thanks to Sinisa Joksic for pointing this out). There was the Ordix Open won by Sergey Rublevsky as reported last week. Finally there were the two lead events, the Fujitsu Siemens Giants and Masters which are covered below. All the games were played at 25 minutes per player. John Henderson produced detailed photo reports from Frankfurt daily on TWIC's pages.

The premier event was the Fujitsu Siemens Giants which took place June 22nd-25th 2000. Viswanathan Anand won the event for a third time with 7.5/12 undefeated a point and a half clear of last years winner Garry Kasparov. Kasparov lost one game, to Peter Leko in round 7, after which it always looked likely that Anand would regain his title.

The Masters event was also very strong with Adams, Ivanchuk, Bareev and Topalov from the top ten players in the World. The event was won by Michael Adams with a stellar score of +7 (8 wins 1 loss to Ordix Open winner Rublevsky in round 4). This brings his score level after two years competing in the Frankfurt, last year he had a terrible result coming last losing 7 and winning 0 in the event that was won by Fritz. In second place was Ivanchuk who set the early pace before being defeated by Adams in their key round 9 game, his only loss.

Last year Fritz on Primergy won the Ordix Open and the Masters. The combination of ChessBase software and Fujitsu Siemens was supposed to have played in the Giants event this year. However Kasparov believes he may have a lucrative match against a computer soon and rufused to play in the Giants if Fritz competed. Instead there was a challenge match between the other five players in the Giants and Fritz. The event was largely completed over the weekend of June 17th-18th 2000 finishing in a tie between Fritz and the humans. The final mini-match of two games against Shirov took place on June 22nd and 24th (Shirov was still in Mexico when the other players played) on the days with two rounds in the Giants. Shirov won the first game and then lost with black to leave the match tied.

Notes on Fischer-Random (FR) Chess: Just before the start of every game, both players' pieces on their respective back rows receive an identical random shuffle using the Fischerandom Chess Computerized Shuffler, which is programmed to set up the pieces in any combination, with the provisos that one Rook has to be to the left and one Rook has to be to the right of the King, and one Bishop has to be on a light-colored square and one Bishop has to be on a dark-colored square. White and Black have identical positions. From behind their respective Pawns the opponents' pieces are facing each other directly, symmetrically. Thus for example, if the shuffler places White's back row pieces in the following position: Ra1, Bb1, Kc1, Nd1, Be1, Nf1, Rg1, Qh1, it will place Black's back row Pieces in the following position, Ra8, Bb8, Kc8, Nd8, Be8, Nf8, Rg8, Qh8, etc. In F.R. Chess there are 960 possible starting positions, the Classical Chess starting position and 959 other starting positions. Of necessity, In F.R. Chess the castling rule is somewhat modified and broadened to allow for the possibility of each player castling either on or into his or her left side or on or into his or her right side of the board from all of these 960 starting positions. FIDE Zonal 1.4 took place in Budapest June 17th-25th. There were 30 players (reduced to 29 after second seed Gyula Sax withdrew after one round due to "joyful family expectations") competing in this 9 round Swiss event. After 9 rounds there was a five way tie for the four qualification places. This means that today (June 26th) will see rapidplay (g/25) games to decide which player misses out. The players involved are: Jozsef Pinter, Alexander Chernin, Bartlomiej Macieja, Pawel Blehm and Vladislav Nevednichy. My thanks to Magyar Sakkszövetség and in particular Péter Gubics for their help.
The event was sponsored by the WFG company (Westfaelische Ferngas AG) who sponsored the Leko-Khalifman match in January in Budapest (and who also sponsor Peter Leko individually). Following the Zonal is a match between Etienne Bacrot and Zoltan Almasi in Szeged 27th June - 2nd July 2000.
