Four Zonals including the very strong zone 1.5 in Yerevan Armenia top the news this week. The European Women's Championships are just coming to a close, you can read in the forthcoming events of the strong European Men's event in Saint Vincent July 3rd-14th. The four player tournament with Shirov, Polgar, Akopian and Gilberto Hernandez runs 13th-21st June 2000 in the City of Merida and should be the highlight of next week along with the Frankfurt Chess Classic 2000 which starts on the 16th (Shirov manages to play in both!). There is good news as a new sponsor for the US Championships means that the event does run this year.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The US Championships 2000 are back on. They were cancelled by the US Chess Federation due to their financial problems. They US Chess Federation and a Seattle based organisation have come to an agreement over sponsoring the event over the next few years. The event will take place September 25th - October 6th 2000 at The Golf Club at Newcastle, near Seattle. The newly formed Seattle organisation seems to have connections with Inside Chess.

The Indian National A Championships took place in Mumbai 15th May-5th June 2000. The huge Category 7 19 player all-play-all event was won by Abhijit Kunte undefeated on 13.5/18. He was a point clear of Krishnan Sasikiran and in retrospect their round four game with was Sasikiran's only loss was decisive. My thanks to Visweswaran for the news.

The Guillermo Garcia Tournament took place in Santa Clara, Cuba May 24 - June 9th 2000. GM Lazaro Bruzon and IM Maikel Gongora both scored 9.5/13 a result which looks to have produced a GM result for Gongora. These two were a point and a half clear of Reynaldo Vera on 8. There was a Premier II event won by Lenier Dominguez with 9/14 in an eight player double round robin event half a point clear of Walter Arencibia who pulled back after a slow start. I hope to have all the games next week.

The Irish National Club Championships took place on June 11 2000 in Leinster reports Pat Reynolds.
There were four qualifiers for the event:
Bray - Leinster league winners / holders
Cork - Munster league
winners
North Belfast - Ulster KO cup winners
Dublin - Leinster cup
winners (in lieu of Connacht side)
The event was held in Leinster for the first time. Only two teams actually turned up and the event had to be made a double-round event. This was due to the late withdrawals from North Belfast & Cork. Despite an upset on board one Bray took a 3-point lead in the first session & drew the second round match to retain the title and qualify for the European Club Championships in 2001.

John Fernandez reports: The OZ.COM prize qualifier on CHESSCLUB.COM on Sunday March 5th 2000 broke practically every record in the history of internet chess. 63 GMs, 51 IMs, 37 FMs, 1 WGM and 5 WIMs, took part in this massive tournament. GM Alex Wojtkiewicz and GM Robert Kempinski, both from Poland, scored 8/9 to tie for first in this massive 310 player field. In a tiebreak match held after the tournament, Wojtkiewicz won 3-1 against Kempinski which qualified him for the trip to the Top of the World tournament April 1-2 in Kopavogur. 2,615 people were logged into Chessclub.com to watch this event (an all time record.) In addition, 168 FIDE titled players were logged in, more than doubling the previous record of 68. GM Nigel Short had broken away from the pack to lead the tournament with 7.5/8 before being tripped up by GM Kempinski in the last round. FM Vinay Bhat had a wonderful tournament, scoring 6.5/8 against GMs! "If only this tournament was rated!", one observer remarked. The event was sponsored by OZ.COM (http://www.oz.com) and CHESSCLUB.COM (http://www.chessclub.com), the world's premier site for online chess play. The event was organized and directed by John Fernandez (jfernandez@chessclub.com).

The Chinese Website chess.lotof.com is running a The World match against Xie Jun. http://chess.lotof.com/index_e.asp is in Chinese and English. The match which started on March 18th 2000 has reached move 44 (on June 12th 2000) with Xie Jun holding a serious, probably winning advantage.
Again the match showed that the individual has the great advantage of being able to play the best move. There were quite a number of strong players competing at the start of the game but when The World chose 23. Nf4 the winner instead of the much to be preferred 23. e4 many of them withdrew complaining of voting irregularities. The Chess Palace in Elista was the venue for the 50th Russian women's championships which took place May 11th-19th 2000. Ekaterina Kovalevskaya won the event with 7/9 a point clear of five players in second place. Just a confirmation from last week that the 25th placed player Svetlana Bezgodova is in fact Svetlana Filichkina her name may well change in the next FIDE rating list. You may want to alter the name in the games section from last week.

* Havana 1966 saw Cuba qualify for the final A group for the first time where he played in turn Larsen, Petrosian, Pomar, Uhlmann (draw), Portisch, Johannessen (draw), Gligoric and finally Fischer (one of the victims of Fischer's Exchange variation of the Ruy Lopez), a pretty tough ask.
In the course of his career he played most of the top players of his era Smyslov, Tal, Reshevsky, Gligoric, Keres, Korchnoi, Geller, Taimanov, Portisch, Stahlberg, Larsen, Petrosian, Fischer (he did manage draws against Fischer in the Capablanca Memorial of 1965 and the 1970 interzonal), Polugaevsky, Botvinnik and Stein. He mostly lost but did get a few draws in a career taking in the above Olympiads, numerous Capablanca Memorial tournaments (with most of the World's best playing at some time or another) and invitations to events such as the Alekhine Memorial 1963, Leningrad 1967, Palma de Mallorca 1967. By coming first equal in the Quito Zonal in 1969 he qualified (after a couple of earlier near misses) for his only Interzonal appearance, in the Palma de Mallorca Interzonal of 1970. He came last but drew against the top 3 and defeated Portisch and Filip. His was a pretty solid player and apart from at the highest level he was hard to defeat.
Jiménez was 5 times champion of Cuba (1957, 1960, 1963, 1965 and 1967), 3 times Pan-American Champion (1963, 1966 and 1970) he was awarded the IM title by FIDE. He worked also in the Academy of Chess of the University of Havana and was National Commissioner and President of the Cuban Chess Federation representing them at several FIDE Congresses.
