1) Introduction

My thanks to Francisco Acosta, Robert Klomp, Phan Thai Tung Linh, Michael Freeman, Edvard Glavas, Visweswaran, Sinisa Joksic, Jonathan Berry, Laszlo Nagy, Luis Santos and all those who helped with this issue.

Kasparov again pulled out the results when he needed them to win the Sarajevo tournament by half a point. Shirov finished second and will surely be kicking himself for losing his penultimate round game when he overpressed. Shirov is in for a very busy month playing in Leon, Spain from June 1st (along with Anand, Polgar and Illescas) in their Advanced chess concept, travelling then to Mexico (along with Polgar) then back again to Frankfurt! Kasparov wasn't the only undefeated player in Sarajevo, Michael Adams was too, level with Shirov only half a point behind Kasparov. Judit Polgar's win in Malmoe was yet another chapter in the career of the strongest woman player ever.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) Kasparov wins in Sarajevo

The Sarajevo tournament 2000 took place May 16th-29th. The event ended in victory for Garry Kasparov who was undefeated on 8.5/11. For a long time it looked as if it might be Alexei Shirov who won the event, but a combination of Kasparov scoring 3/3 in the final rounds and Shirov overplaying his hand in the penultimate round against Movsesian meant that Shirov had to settle for joint second half a point behind on 8 points with Michael Adams. Adams too was undefeated. There was a gap of two points to the next three, Morozevich (who lost two out of his last three games), Topalov and Bareev. They in turn were a point and a half clear of Ivan Sokolov. Kasparov also gained rating points with this performance which will probably be his last classic tournament (he plays in Frankfurt in the rapidplay) before his match against Vladimir Kramnik.

6) Zone 3.2a

There were two FIDE World Championship places available from zone 3.2a which took place in Vung Tau Vietnam May 21-29th 2000. The event was a nine round Swiss System event with 32 players. The qualifiers were local player Dao Thien Hai and Villamayor Bong of the Philippines who both scored 7/9 a point clear of the rest of the field. There was no need for any playoff games. There were medals for the top three finshers Dao got gold, Villamayor silver and Rico Mascarinas bronze.

One of the big surprises of the event is already the elimination of Utut Adianto and Eugenio Torre, they were eliminated with one round to go, Adianto defeated Torre in the final round.

My thanks to Phan Thai Tung Linh for his help.

10) Indian Championships

The Indian National A Championships take place in Mumbai 15th May-5th June 2000. The huge Category 7 19 player all-play-all event is being led by Abhijit Kunte with 8.5/11 a point clear of Dibyendu Barua on 7.5/11 although the two are yet to meet in the event. Krishnan Sasikiran is on 7.0/10 (each player has one bye due to the odd number of players). My thanks to Visweswaran for the news.
