Sarajevo is warming up nicely and next week we can look forward to Kasparov playing Shirov and Morozevich. The Dutch Championships were won by Loek Van Wely with Fritz eventually finishing 3rd=. FIDE are already making moves that mean that computers will not be able to compete in rated events. It seems uncertain whether the FIDE Championships will go ahead this year, a bid has been accepted from India and Iran but the money has not been raised yet. Tomorrow the Sigeman & Co Chess tournament in Malmoe, Sweden starts. Its been a good month for top rated events.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The Sarajevo tournament 2000 takes place May 16th-29th. After the first five rounds the leaders are Garry Kasparov and Alexei Shirov with 4/5 undefeated. Kasparov has yet to play close rivals Shirov and Morozevich. Kasparov has good records against both but they are in good form and these will be key in the battle for first place.

The Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament 2000 takes place 23rd-29th May 2000 in Malmö, Sweden. This year the event is a four player double round-robin event with: IGM Judit Polgar, IGM Jan Timman, IGM Ulf Andersson and IGM Tiger Hillarp-Persson.
The Broekhuis Dutch Chess Championships took place in Rotterdam May 7th-19th 2000 (free days May 11th and May 16th). Loek Van Wely won his first Dutch title. He drew his final round game with black after being in slight difficulty out of the opening. Jeroen Piket lost his final round but still took clear second place a point behind the winner. The event was controversial due to the participation of Fritz 6. The main loser in Fritz's particiaption seems to have been Van der Sterren, he would have been joint second if you just take into account the human results but he refused to play the computer. A final standings of the just human scores is given for comparison.
Fritz lost two games one to the winner Van Wely and the other to John Van der Wiel in the final round, the latter winning the best game prize for a game against the computer. He was one of the most successful players in the old AEGON computer vs human events and it showed. De Vreugts final round win against Bosboom was awarded the best game prize. This game was also De Vreugt's third and final GM norm.

PT Ummer Koya is attempting to raise funds for the FIDE Championships. He proposes to hold the match in New Delhi starting on November 25th 2000 with later stages to be held in Tehran or Elista. However contrary to earlier reports he has not raised the money yet. Things should clarify a little in June. A bid has been filed jointly by the Iranian and Indian chess federations. $3.5m dollars is required in prizefund for the men's and women's FIDE Championships. The bid does not reach that level. They will however have to raise at least $1m (according to FIDE the bid is $2.7m). My understanding is that little if anything has been raised so far.
There had also been considerable doubt concerning the 34th Chess Olympiad, scheduled for Istanbul in October after the organisers failed to send out the invitations on time. FIDE Vice President Emrehan Halici, the Chairman of the organising committee came to London to reassure delegates that the event would take place as planned. Mr Halici, a member of the Turkish Parliament, even came armed with a new bank guarantee.
At the initiative of Kevin O Connell of the FIDE Ratings Commission, it was agreed to deduct 100 points from all the Burmese players ranked over 2100. This adjustment has been necessary because most of their ratings have been produced by playing amongst themselves and are vastly out of synch with the rating list as a whole.
Bu Xiangzhi of China has had his GM title ratified. He is the youngest ever holder of the title at 14 years old.
The Presidential Board also unanimously resolved to exclude computers from all FIDE rated events. The Board emphasized that while it will continue to encourage chess exhibitions, strictly along commercial lines with computers, it will not support the use of machines or computers against humans in official chess competitions, in view of the recognition of chess as a sport by the International Olympic Committee.

The Israeli League concluded on Friday May 12th with a final twist. The previous week "Club Kasparov" Rishon Le Zion put themselves in a great position to win the league by beating their close rivals Beer-Sheva and as a consequence going top by a point. (the league standings are a combination of board points and single bonus points for winning matches). However it was all reversed in the final round with Beer Sheva beating Kfar Saba 5.5-1.5 whilst Club Kasparov was narrowly losing to Herzlia 3-4. Both teams qualify for the European Team Championships. Full results and games now available.

Branislav Rakic celebrated 30 years as Chess Editor of the daily newspaper "Politika Ekspres" on Friday May 19th. Recognition came from the Yugoslav Chess Federation, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and the President of European Chess Union Boris Kutin. He also has been the chief of the Press Center at all the "Investbanka" chess supertournaments. I used to read Politika many years ago when I worked at Bradford University, it had two sides of A2 devoted to chess at the weekend and daily chess columns with games, it was one of the best sources of information on chess. It was also the first place I saw a picture of Bobby Fischer when he returned to chess to play Spassky in Yugoslavia. My thanks to Alisa Maric for the news.
