FIDE's announcements on the Olympiad and their World Championships head the news this week. FIDE still haven't found any realistic sponsor for the prizefund and seemed to be struggling to find a venue. PT Ummer Koya of India wishes to take the event to India and Iran, although he seems to have some backing he obviously is still seeking further money. We await developments. This week the Sarajevo tournament starts with Kasparov starring. We already have seen some interesting chess from the Leonid Stein Memorial. It is a long time since we've had two superGM events running simultaneously.
Hope you enjoy this issue

There was a FIDE Presidential Board meeting over the weekend of May 14th-15th 2000. There were a number of important issues settled. The 2000 FIDE World Championship and Women's World Chess Championship will start on Saturday 25 November in New Delhi, and the final rounds will be in Tehran, Iran should political complications arise because a player comes from Israel there is a reserve venue of Elista. Funding for the match comes from a mixture of sources. PT Ummer Koya of the All India Chess Federation has already secured funds from Iran and hope to have some from India. However FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has agreed to guarantee $3million.
There had also been considerable doubt concerning the 34th Chess Olympiad, scheduled for Istanbul in October after the organisers failed to send out the invitations on time. FIDE Vice President Emrehan Halici, the Chairman of the organising committee came to London to reassure delegates that the event would take place as planned. Mr Halici, a member of the Turkish Parliament, even came armed with a new bank guarantee.
At the initiative of Kevin O Connell of the FIDE Ratings Commission, it was agreed to deduct 100 points from all the Burmese players ranked over 2100. This adjustment has been necessary because most of their ratings have been produced by playing amongst themselves and are vastly out of synch with the rating list as a whole.
The Chess Olympiad will take place from 27th October to 13th November. The FIDE World Championship starts on 23th November and ends on December 20th.

The Broekhuis Dutch Chess Championships take place in Rotterdam May 7th-19th 2000 (free days May 11th and May 16th). The event is controversial due to the participation of Fritz SSS with a number of players objecting to its participation. After 8/11 rounds the event is being led by Loek Van Wely (the only player to beat the computer) half a point clear of Sergei Tiviakov.

The Japfa Open took place in Bali INA May 3rd-11th 2000. This was an open tournament with total prize money of US$20,000. There were four players tied on 7.5/9 with Darmen Sadvakasov having the best tie-break ahead of Normunds Miezis, Bong Villamayor and Jaan Ehlvest. Ian Rogers headed a group of eight players on points. There was a field of 230. On the Burmese ratings front there were three players seeded 1, 8 and 11. The top seed Zaw Win Lay, was the only one high enough in the event to have played a rated player. He played one rated player, Tim Reilly rated at 2192 and lost, the other two didn't even get high enough to play rated opponents. The figures given after the players scores are the TPR (tournament performance rating). My thanks to Kristianus Liem for his help.

Michael Atkins reports: The New York Open ran May 5th-11th, 2000. The venue was the New Yorker Hotel in Manhattan. Ilya Smirin took first place alone with 7.5/9.
The New York Open 2000 returned from a one year hiatus with a bang this past week. Playing at the New Yorker Hotel in downtown Manhattan, 200 player participated in the international Open section and over 130 players partook of the Amateur Round Robin sectionals this weekend.
GM Ilia Smirin of Israel took clear first place with 7.5/9 and was followed a half point behind by Igor Khenkin, Nick DeFirmian, Alexander Goldin, and Alexander Ivanov. Brazilian GM, 20 year old Rafael Leitao led the tournament the middle rounds scoring 5.5 out of six before only 2 draws in his final three games. Smirin finished the tournament hot, with wins over Julio Becerra, Leitao and Alexander Grischuk and took home $14,000.
Mikheil Kekelidze of Georgia got his final GM norm in the tournament as did Mark Paragua (Phillipines) with his IM norms. Boris Privman of NY also got an IM norm. Kudos to Organizer Jose Cuchi for getting the tournament to happen and to Chief Arbiter Carol Jarecki and her staff for running the event. We look forward to 2001!!

The Israeli League concluded on Friday May 12th with a final twist. The previous week "Club Kasparov" Rishon Le Zion put themselves in a great position to win the league by beating their close rivals Beer-Sheva and as a consequence going top by a point. (the league standings are a combination of board points and single bonus points for winning matches). However it was all reversed in the final round with Beer Sheva beating Kfar Saba 5.5-1.5 whilst Club Kasparov was narrowly losing to Herzlia 3-4. Both teams qualify for the European Team Championships. A fuller set of results should and games from this final round should be available next week.

Garry Kasparov had a fright against Judit Polgar in the first game of their two game Blitz Match held last week. The event saw Kasparov play from the Kasparov Chess offices and Judit Polgar play from the HUNGExpo fair in Budapest. Kasparov played 1....e5 as black and went into the Breyer Variation a highly unusual variation for him. The games were 5 minute chess and mutual blunders saw Polgar win a piece but the position simplified to a draw. This was only the second time Polgar has got a result from Kasparov at any form of chess, her previous draw came in a rapidplay event in 1994. Kasparov won the second game in a Neo-Gruenfeld with fairly straightforward play.
