1) Introduction

My thanks to Anton Gubanov (Ruschess.com), John Henderson, Alexander Roshal, Willi Knebel, Lanfranco Bombelli, Kristianus Liem, Mladen Zelic, Paul Dunn, Ülar Lauk, Alejandro Nogueira, Michael Atkins, Günther van den Bergh, Sinisa Joksic, John Hurley, Jonathan Berry, Holger Sahrhage, Leonard Barden, Axel Fritz, Herman Claudius van Riemsdijk and all those who helped with this issue.

The Japfa Classic in Indonesia ends on Tuesday, with a four way tie for first and with the top four playing amongst each other the last round could be very exciting or very dull depending on the motivation of the players. Kasparov won the Chess Oscar by a mile for his great results last year, Khalifman finished 3rd behind Kramnik but did pick up the second largest number of first preferences. The 4NCL saw some big names arrive in England for the final weekend including Alexander Morozevich. There are also a number of other nice all-play-alls at the moment.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) Japfa Classic

The Japfa Classic International Chess Tournament 2000 is the strongest ever in Indonesia. The Category 16 event takes place in the Bali Beach Hotel. It runs 22nd April to 2nd May 2000. The total prize money US$56,500. After there is an open tournament (May 3-May 11, 2000) with total prize money of US$20,000. My thanks to Kristianus Liem for his help.

With one round to go Anatoly Karpov, Judit Polgar, Alexander Khalifman and Gilberto Milos share first place on 5.5/8. The last round is on Tuesday. Zaw Win Lay the Burmese player is in last place but did manage to hold Karpov with black in round 8.

The previous strongest chess event in Asia was the double round robin Marlboro-Loyola Challenge in 1976 in Manila, Philippines, with the Karpov 2695, Ljubojevic 2620, Browne 2585 and Torre 2505. Torre went on to win that event with 4,5 point from 6 rounds.

3) 4NCL

The final weekend of the 4NCL saw Wood Green arrive with a host of top Grandmasters including Alexander Morozevich, Nigel Short and John Speelman. Things didn't go to plan as you can read below. Games and final standings in next week's TWIC. You can read John Henderson's detailed reports on the front page of TWIC.

John Henderson reports: A close finish was expected at the final three rounds of the 4 Nations Chess League in Birmingham as the reigning champions, Slough, held a slender one-point lead over their rivals, Wood Green, with the two teams due to meet in the decisive final game of the season on Monday. With one wildcard selection for all teams allowed on the final weekend, Slough arrived with their wildcard being the former Candidates finalist, Kevin Spraggett of Canada, and the pre-registered Tony Miles and Lubo Ftacnik of Slovakia. Not to be outdone, a determined Wood Green trumped that with the wildcard of world no.5, Alexander Morozevich of Russia, and the pre-registered Jon Speelman and the former world title challenger, Nigel Short. Everything looked set for the final round showdown until disaster struck the Wood Green Globetrotters when the non- GM team of Barbican burst their bubble by beating the title hopefuls in round nine. Wood Green paid the price of not fielding Morozevich and Short in a match they felt they could win with just five GMs! The slip-up virtually guaranteed Slough their second successive title as they moved three-points clear at the top with just two games to play.

Round 9

Slough1 6-2 Wood Green2; Barbican1 4.5-3.5 Wood Green1; Bigwood1 6.5-1.5 Richmond; Bristol1 3.5-4.5 Index IT1; Silvine White Rose 7-1 North West Eagles; Guildford ADC 7-1 The AD's.

Division 1

1 Slough1 18 (54.5); 2 Wood Green1 15 (46.5); 3 Bigwood1 15 (46.5); 4 Barbican1 13 (42.0); 5 Index IT1 10 (35.0); 6 Guildford ADC 9 (41.0); 7 Richmond 7 (31.0); 8 Silvine White Rose 6 (32.5); 9 Bristol1 6 (29.5); 10 The AD's 4 (26.0); 11 North West Eagles 3 (24.0); 12 Wood Green2 2 (23.5).

A tenth round victory over Barbican gave Slough an unassailable three-point lead over their rivals, Wood Green, to lift the 1999/2000 4NCL title with one game of the season left to play. After throwing their title chances away in round nine after losing to Barbican, Wood Green, bolstered their squad with Alexander Morozevich, Nigel Short and Ketevan Arakhamia- Grant, to easily overpowered Guildford 5.5-2.5. In the top board clash, Jonathan Rowson was well and truly "Morozevich'd" as the world no.5 turned over the Scottish champion in just 26-moves. However, all the fun was taking place on the next board as Nigel Short had a nightmare debut in the 4NCL. The former world championship challengers King came under relentless pressure as Jim Plaskett unleashed a devastating, winning attack. All eyes are now on the last round of the season with the top fixture of Slough vs. Wood Green. Although Slough have already secured the 4NCL division one title, they'll be a lot of pride at stake for the Wood Green side as they need to win to be guaranteed second place in the league.

Round 10

Barbican 4NCL 2.5-5.5 Slough1; Wood Green1 5.5-2.5 Guildford ADC; Bristol1 2.5-5.5 Bigwood1; Index IT1 4-4 Silvine White Rose; Richmond1 2.5-5.5 North West Eagles; The AD's 3.5-4.5 Wood Green2.

Division 1

11) 38th Doeberl Cup, Canberra

The Annual Doeberl Cup in Canberra too place April 21st-24th 2000. The event was won by IM Alex Wohl (he defeated Ian Rogers in round 6) half a point clear of GM Darryl Johansen and Mark Chapman . GM Ian Rogers was a further half point behind. [Source Paul Dunn for the results and games]

The event has achieved wider media coverage than might have been expected because of a fight that took place during round four. The incident occurred in the fourth round when David Beaumont of Melbourne became upset by the noisy comments made by another player, Sydney's Alexander Gaft, whose game had already concluded. Beaumont politely asked Gaft to keep quiet but Gaft replied with abuse followed by an invitation to step outside to settle the matter. Despite having only a few minutes left on his chess clock to finish the game, Beaumont left his seat and moved towards Gaft. A violent brawl ensued spilling over from the playing room to the corridor, with Gaft being repeatedly punched and Beaumont thrown onto a glass door. The fight was broken up after a few minutes by other players, whereupon Beaumont returned to his game. "Beaumont was sorely provoked," admitted chief arbiter Shaun Press, "but retaliation is no excuse." "We have had people thrown out of the tournament before but never for fighting," said Press. Despite having only 20 seconds left upon his return to his game from the fight, Beaumont succeeded in achieving a draw. However the organisers of the tournament immediately decided to expel both players from the tournament. Press said that he expected Gaft to be banned from tournament play in Australia for a considerable period.

16) 53rd Yugoslav Women's Championships

Sinisa Joksic reports on the 53rd Yugoslav Women's Championships. Svetlana Prudnikova won the Yugoslav Women's Championship title on her debut in the event. The 33 year old Russian now lives in Belgrade after her marriage and she now has two children. She was Russian Champion twice, in 1992 and 1998, in addition she finished second in 1996 and 1997. Svetlana became a WGM after the Olympiad in Manila 1992, where she played second board for the Russian team. Her chess career has seen a lot of second places, particularly as a junior. Junior World championship Vilnus 1986, the Russian children's Championships 1982, 1983 and 1984. Prudnikova played excellent chess scoring 12/13 or 92 per cent! She won the first 10 games and after two draws, won the last one. Russian born players filled the next two places also, GM Maria Manakova (27) and Irina Chelushkina (39). Manakova played very solidly and like Prudnikova was undefeated. Last years champion, Chelushkina lost her first two games and had to play hard to catch up with Manakova. There was a very good performance from Marija Petrovic. Much more was expected from Ana Benderac. It's pity that Yugoslav best players, Alisa Maric and Natasa Bojkovic didn't play. The 53rd Yugoslav Championships took place in Herceg-Novi, on the coast of Montenegro, April 9th - 23rd 2000. No-one made any norms for international titles. The championships didn't see many spectators which is strange for Yugoslavia. However the event was without the usual publicity and the hotel rates were very high. The prizes were 25.000 dinars, 20.000, 15.000, 12.500, 10.000 6th-7th 7.500 and for players who didn't take the prize 1.000 for win and 400 dinars for draw. (24 dinars = 1 DM)

22) Mar del Plata

As reported last week the XXXI Mar del Plata Open took place April 15th-23rd 2000. The event was won by fm Martin Labollita who scored 8/9 to be a point clear of the rest of the field. My thanks to José Mariano Acosta for the information.

Herman Claudius van Riemsdijk has sent a number of corrections to the games from last week to names results and in a couple of cases the pairings were the wrong way round. He also sends his game against Quiroga, from round 8 which is exactly the same sacrifice as the 1954 Bronstein-Najdorf game (Argentina x USSR). He has played it several times before and had always won but made some inacurracies (eg 22 c4! was better then 22 Rd1?!) and his opponent played well.
