My thanks to Antonio Bento, Ray Clark, Eduard Piacun, Olivier Deville, Shahcom, ICC, Michael Rahal, Ales Drinovec, Anton Gubanov, Webmaster of "Russian Chess", Shahcom, SS Quah, Europe Echecs, GM Schach, Anjo Anjewierden, Canal21 and all those who helped with this issue.
The start of Linares is always a time of anticipation. The first round saw wins for Kasparov over Shirov and Kramnik over Khalifman, the two players who did not compete at Wijk aan Zee this year. Whether this is an indication of the way things will go only time will tell. TWIC will have daily coverage from the event including on the spot reports and pictures.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The Linares 2000 tournament started today with two of the three games finishing decisively. Kasparov, Kramnik, Anand and Leko all played (undefeated) in the recent Corus event in Wijk aan Zee. Shirov and Khalifman did not play there and they both lost. FIDE Champion Khalifman in particular looked short of form.
The draw was on Sunday in the Linares town hall. First to draw his number (they were on Telefonica Mobile phones) was Anand (4), then Kasparov (2), Khalifman (1), Kramnik (6), Leko (3) and finally Shirov (5) ie alphabetical order. Luis Rentero who was the long time organiser of the event (now his son is heavily involved) appeared fit after his serious car accident in late 1998 and received a gold Medal and Diploma from the organisers.
Live internet coverage is available at: http://www.ajedrez21.com.
TWIC has John Henderson on the spot for reports and pictures. The games will be available each day on the conclusion of play.
Anatoly Karpov and Etienne Bacrot are playing a series of games in Cannes, France. 2 games at classical time rates took place on February 23rd-24th 2000 (both drawn). Then two rapidplay games on Feb 26th saw two wins for Bacrot the second saw him sacrifice material to delay Karpov and win on time (in a totally lost position). Karpov won the two blitz games on Feb 27th. There was live video coverage of the event.

Anjo Anjewierden reports: The second weekend of the Dutch League was played in Hengelo. The ten teams of ten players included 20 GM's (Timman, Van Wely, Piket, Korchnoi, Sadler, Lautier, etc.). Panfox took no risks and with a line up of mostly GM's they won against both ESGOO and Rotterdam with 8-2. The only win for Rotterdam was Korchnoi's victory over Loek van Wely on top board. In the battle for second place, HSG had little problems with BSG (7.5-2.5). Panfox, HSG and BSG are the most likely candidates for the four play-off places. The remaining spot is very much open after a disappointing draw of ESGOO against Utrecht. It could have been much worse for the home-team.
SMB surprised with two victories. In the second round the all-amateur team defeated Amstelveen and in the second round they won against Groningen (with Tiviakov on top-board). The arbiters had some problem deciding on the outcome of Hans Bohm - Frank Erwich. The players disagreed on the number of moves made, finally it was concluded that Bohm only made 39 moves and did not make the first time-control. 15 year old Frank Erwich is the only player with a perfect 4/4 score.
Round 3 (2000.02.26): HSG (Hilversum) - Utrecht 7.0 - 3.0 BSG (Bussum) - Groningen 6.5 - 3.5 Amstelveen - SMB (Nijmegen) 3.5 - 6.5 LSG (Leiden) - Rotterdam 5.0 - 5.0 Panfox (Breda) - ESGOO (Enschede) 8.0 - 2.0 Round 4 (2000.02.27): Groningen - Amstelveen 4.0 - 6.0 HSG - BSG 7.2 - 2.5 Rotterdam - Panfox 2.0 - 8.0 SMB - LSG 6.0 - 4.0 Utrecht - ESGOO 5.0 - 5.0 Standings: 1. FIDE have made their document on commercialisation available. Intro: http://www.fide.org/fide/html/press/press11.html and the document itself: http://www.fide.org/fide/html/press/press11_1.html. People should read these documents and understand. Elsewhere on the FIDE site under the banner of FIDE Official Info: Chess Review there is material which at the moment consists of near random comments on the top chess events of the year so far over the top of tables mostly taken from TWIC (unacknowledged but surely some sort of compliment). At least if they take over World Chess I'll have no problem justifying the use of material from their site.
